Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Debora Serracchiani

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Debora Serracchiani, Italian lawyer and politician, Member of the European Parliament on behalf of the Democratic Party and member of the group Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.

We asked Debora her opinion about the current situation of the Italian Government. She thinks that the Prime Minister's downhill trend is there for all to see, and because of his inability to take care of his personal matters instead of the country's problems, Italy as well is being dragged down with him.
There is certainly the need for change, the need for new figures, and hopefully change will happen as soon as possible. [video]

Another question we asked Debora was about her practical proposals for young people's occupational future.
First of all, in her opionion it is necessary to intervene on how people enter the world of work, not on how people exit it. Secondly the types of available contracts are way too many and misused, also and mostly because they aren't controlled in any way.
Her proposals would be: more control on the types of contracts, creating an initial permanent contract that can be modified based on length of service and the contribution to the company, paying  fixed term employees more than those with a permanent contract, making social safety nets better and stimulating companies into hiring young people by lowering the amount of social security contributions they have to pay. [video]

We asked Debora how her financial manneuver would have been: first of all, she wouldn't have waited November 2011 to let the country know that the situation was severe enough to make some unpopular decisions necessary.
The main points on which she would have intervened would have been making citizens that can afford paying more taxes actually contribute more, making some intensive operations on tax evasion, transfering taxes on assets and reducing those of who works and produces, giving the possibility to small and very small companies to access credit with facilitations, cutting off the costs of politics and finally reducing taxes. [video]

Debora has also expressed her opinion about the use of social tools in political communication: she thinks that it is necessary to invest in the web, but at the same time maintain a strong contact with people and territory. [video]

We have also asked what she thinks about the "occupy" movements and the tendency of citizens to get hold of politics again. In her opinion these are important movements, that treat topics that not only regard Europe, but the whole world, such as finance, political choices for the protection of banks and insurances.
Debora has also specified she doesn't agree with all positions: as for the debt issue, her sense of responsibility and the desire to make it a better country bring her to also take care of a debt that she has only inherited, and she hasn't contributed to create. [video]

As for Matteo Renzi, Debora thinks he is a resource for PD, he is the administrator of an important city who has pointed out the topic of the rechange of the political class.
She shares some of his ideas and discusses others, but in the end it is important to discuss inside the same party, and discuss ideas: not surnames or people. [video]

We asked Debora what her opinion about Beppe Grillo is: even though she doesn't share some extreme positions of his, she has stressed that Grillo has been dealing with many important matters, first of all the short circuit between society, banks and finance.
The Democratic Party should ask itself why it can't interact with those who vote Grillo, especially because there are many points on which the two movements agree: she doesn't hold him responsible for the defeats her party has suffered, she thinks the Democratic Party should start talking to those who vote him. [video]

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details, insights and information than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Giuseppe Civati

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Giuseppe Civati, Italian politician and blogger.

First of all, Giuseppe told us about the path that brought him to deal with politics: school, then the Giovani Progressisti, then the committees for Prodi and the institutional politics, and finally the place as a regional counselor for Regione Lombardia. [video]

We asked what his financial manneuver would have been like, had he been in the government: Giuseppe says that the right thing to do would be make those who can afford it pay the crisis, not the ones that have the biggest financial difficulties.
Yes to the capital levy, especially to the idea of lowering the taxation of work and enterprises, and increasing the taxes for those who have great real estate properties that block the country, and that are the most profitable and less taxes form of investment. [video]

Berlusconism, in Giuseppe's opinion, doesn't start and doesn't finish with Berlusconi, even though it is now facing a period of great crisis, both from a political and a moral point of view.
The Parliament majority is there, even though the Parliament itself is blocked by very vulgar blackmail mechanisms. [video]

We asked Giuseppe if in his opinion the DDL Wiretappings will pass: the Prime Minister's project seems to be to close every hatchway, avoid an informed public debate and limit the possibility of expressing critics on the base of real data.
The public television service is already paying a great price, with the most troublesome journalists leaving Rai and Mediaset. [video]

For politics that has lost its goals, it is necessary to find new interpreters, free and with a functional deadline, for example a limit to the number of mandates they can candidate for.
We talked about a possibly better model of electoral law, that Giuseppe has identified in the "majority" system, as for mayor election, a model that might guarantee a better guvernability and a more informed and elaborated choice.
Even with the Calderoli Law, known as Porcellum, it would be possible to find a viable solution: it would only be necessary to choose members of Parliament with the primary elections, but this proposal has never been applied. [video]

In conclusion Giuseppe has talked about the points of his digital agenda for Italy, of his idea of Europe, of retirement pensions and temporary employment, expressing his opinion regarding the solutions that might solve the problems relative to these topics.

Giuseppe has obviously answered your questions, so I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in informations and details than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

The Good Italy (maybe Bill Emmott was right)

The day after the elections I declared myself very disappointed by the result of the vote. I believed that in front of me would unfold a political scenario unable to defend the rights this country had been asking for such a long time, and that are desperately needed.

And still the other day, with the election of two people of great moral and civic profile such as Laura Boldrini and Piero Grasso, something lit inside of me: what if Bill Emmott was right? What if the time to say "the End" isn't here yet and "good Italy" still has the possibility to save itself?

During the weekend, thinking about what happened, many stories came to my mind. There's the story of Massimo, an entrepreneur from Vicenza who works in the textile field, forced to fire 10 of his employees in order to not let his small company fail in the midst of the crisis. At work Massimo considered everyone as his brothers, since he had worked alongside them for 12 years. Today, only the smile of his daughter Marianna, 7 years old, manages to take out of his mind the despair on his employees' faces when he told them he had to fire them.

I think of Karim, born in Rome in 1995 and son of a multiethnic, new generation Italy, born to a couple of Egyptians who have been residing in Italy for many years. After the diploma at the Liceo Righi, Marco has requested the Italian citizenship. Last month he turned 18, but his country still doesn't consider him an Italian citizen at all effects. He's a great fan of Luigi Mastrangelo, he'd like to play in the national volley team and give his country a medal, but not having the Italian citizenship remains an obstacle for the realization of his dream.

My thoughts go to Silvia, a 25 year old girl with a diploma in Physics, 110 cum laude, who has been forced to leave Sardinia, one of the regions with the highest unemployment rate in the country. Today she works in Switzerland and whilke she hopes to put her knowledge to good work in her island, she looks dreaming at the four mores flag over the desk in her Geneve room.

Giovanni comes to my mind, a 62 year old worker from Modena. Giovanni has two daughters, both go to the university, one of them would like to go abroad to get a Master at LSE. Today Giovanni doesn't know how to explain that he won't be able to pay their fees because the Government, after 36 years of paid contributions and 4 in mobility, has decided to label him as "esodato", not giving him the right to receive a pension after working his entire life.

I think of Claudia, student of Engineering at the University of Palermo. The successes in her studies will never be able to fill the void created three years ago, when a few bullets reached her father by mistake, causing his death at only 53. Since then, she entered the association Libera, and works to give a future to her region.

Annamaria is an Italian, History and Geography teacher in a middle school of Lombardy. She has three classes, for a total of 74 pupils. Every day she goes to work happy of doing what she's always dreamed of, since she was a little girl: forming tomorrow's generations. Not even the ingratitude of some political exponents toward her work manages to take away the pride of being part of that fundamental institution that is the public school.

Finally there's the story of Amina, who has a 2 year old daughter, Amal, an Arabic name that means "hope". Amina has chosen this name with the hope to give her daughter the possibility to live in a country free from civil war, violence and abuse. She spent the little money she had to get to Lybia and embark for Italy, but near Lampedusa the boat was intercepted by the Italian authorities, who have accompanied Amina, Amal and other 200 people towards Tripoli, against their will, and without giving them the possibility to present asilum request, as guaranteed by international right.

Why have I told you all these stories? Well, because on Saturday afternoon, in those two Parliament rooms, my story and that of these people have intersected.

E quindi? I blogger fanno tre lavori diversi?

Nulla, in realtà.

Keeping a blog isn't a job: it's using a tool

"Him? He's the blogger of Telecom, she's the blogger of Vodafone" said a friend, during an event, showing me two people at a small distance. I was stunned by the attribution of company belonging for two bloggers, and most of all, I was amazed by the fact that in the end it was something that everyone knew.

Recently Federico Evangelisti has posted an interesting analysis on the relationship between bloggers and companies. Federico's thesis is more or less this: how can you consider bloggers to be reliable and trustworthy, since they are more and more involved by companies and tendentially generous with them? In the end he proposes a sort of code for the bloggers themselves.

The code provocation is interesting, because it opens a whole array of questions that are all but futile. Deontology presumes a profession so: is there such a thing as the profession of blogger? And if yes, what is it?

The answer isn't simple nor immediate. Let's proceed with order. For those who, like me, work in company communication and deals with the web it's normal, now, to see events that are thought for the bloggers (does anyone remember "MeetFS", beside the criticism that it caused?), dinners, invitations to press conferences and presentations, products sent in trial, engagement of these people as testimonials or detonators of virality in the field of events ("let's call a blogger and make him do the live tweeting" you can hear in the rooms of the communication offices of great companies).

The bloggers are defining themselves more and more as "actors of communication processes", strong in their position of "influencers". They have an audience and are getting closer and closer to being "media". Their job is hence overlapping with that of a journalist? For some, definitely yes. In particular those who choose to "do information" and in many cases they do it even better than the journalists themselves (risking a lot in first person), but they're definitely a minority.

Next to these there are also those who do other jobs and who use a blog simply to express what they think, to contribute to discussions and debates. Opinionists, we could call them, praised for their specific preparation and for the value of their opinions, are by all rights the editorialists of the Web.

In between these two "categories" there are all the bloggers who specialize in particular fields of products and create relationships with this or that company. The "experts", we might call them, capable (or so it is believed) of determining the success of a product or grounding its commercial hopes. Federico Evangelisti's post referred especially to them, considering that these three categories are not, by all means, compartimentalized, but have boundaries so blurry it's hard to detect them.

So? Bloggers do three different jobs? In reality the least common multiple is that posting, having a blog, being a blogger isn't a job but a tool. Today the blog has the function of getting visibility and building a name, in order to obtain jobs, consultancies, contracts, to enter the "good circle". So the blog is, almost all the time, a tool of personal branding. Actually it is "THE" tool. Not always and not anyhow, let it be clear, but the tendency is undeniable.

So, you become blogger to then manage to become an influencer and determinant for one or more companies, and build relationships with them. You open a blog to build some authority in a field and then propose yourself as a consultant or expert. You open a blog and you try to become a "character", in order to get called as testimonials or other things. E again, you open a blog, you accept to position it on the platforms of great information websites, for free, to obtain that visibility useful to try and get a place as a journalist or in the world of information.

What's bad in all of this? Nothing, to be honest. The authority of a blogger depends on the community, it will be said, so if people continue to follow him it means that, in the end, he doesn't do his information "job" bad, or at least he's appreciated, and if out of this he can get some sort of advantage, even economical, then it's all for the best.

The only thing that maybe it's worth doing is definitively emptying the field from the existence of the category of "pure" bloggers, at least in Italy. According to the philosophical guidelines at the beginning of the Web, those free voices that had the role of feeding the collective knowledge of the Web, finding valuable content and making it available to the community.

Blogging has entered a new dimension, more and more at the service of the blogger's personal branding. You open a blog for "second means", which by itself isn't bad. In this sense, the Web offers a precious opportunity, a possibility that didn't exist before. Then, once you are active in the great sea of the Web, what matters is what you can do and the value of what you write and that is a form of meritocracy that is more unique than rare.

The important thing is to quit clothing the blog with cultural and libertarian meanings that it doesn't have anymore, or that has in minimum measure. For the rest, go blogs!

Mafia and work: everyone's problem

This post won't take much time because you will probably read it at work, or while you're busy looking for a job. I'll be brief, because I'm also looking for a job, like everyday.

Often the type of inquiries I carry on, particularly those on organized crime, are perceived as things for journalists that have nothing to do with the daily problems of people, such as "work".

Well, that's not the case, because - and it's no news - the mafia offers services, offers protection and even work. Asking for favors in exchange, but that's the way it is, especially in times of crisis when the request of illegality by some entrepreneurs encounters the services offer of Mafia S.p.A. "By hiring people and creating jobs the mafia acquires consensus, proving to be capable of doing what the State cannot do", has written to GIP of Milano Giuseppe Gennari in the inquiry of call center operators Blue-Call, which I followed for Linkiesta.

I will not spend a lot of time explaining it, but here's the link. Just think that once the doors are open by the entrepreneurs, there goes a responsible in his 20s who falls asleep in meetings and doesn't understand what they're talking about. But he has no convictions and he controls how things go in the company on behalf of the clan Bellocco.

In the meanwhile the Blue-Call, in 2010 seventh call-center operator at a national level with an income of more than 10 milion euro and offices in all of Italy because of the doors open to clans must fire and reduce the organic to the minimum. They fire but still pay the mafia people. For "normal" operatorss who work every day, getting paid becomes a luxury, says an account.

I promised not to be long, the topic is big and has to do with the entire labor market, from building to services, through agriculture and small and medium companies. And mafia matters in the labor market aren't journalist stuff, they're stories that have to do with everyone. As for this, I wanted to share an email that I've been sent from an ex employee at Blue-Call, that says a lot and should make those who have to do with politics and work and right to work, give an eye to the dynamics and distortions created by organized crime.

L'#Opinionedeifatti: Seppuku

Non so perché, secondo me sono buonissimi.

Seppuku

My dog keeps telling me I should find a job. He says I don't take care of him enough, that the house is a mess and that he's fed up with eating discount kibbles. I don't know why, I think they're great.

What my dog doesn't understand (he's called Proust, he's seven and he's a cross between a Belgian shepperd and an asshole) is that the labor market doesn't want someone like me. Regardless of whether I talk to my dog or not.

- "Thanks for participating to our interviews... we'd take you right away if you didn't have such absurd requests".
- "Absurd like what?".
- "Like pretending to get a salary".
- "I thought that was implicit".
- "It would be if you already had 10 years experience in the field and a portfolio of clients to present, or relatives ready to buy our products. I don't think this is your case. If you want we have a spot as a stagist".
- "Does it mean we're going to have sex?".
- "Only on Tuesdays and Fridays".
- "Have you ever done it with a Belgian shepperd before?".
- "Huh?".
- "Never mind. I'll call you back, maybe".

So I stay here, at home, waiting for the Seventh-day Adventists to come see me: since the day I started trafficking in Rohypnol they've become my main source of income (I won't go into the hows and whys). I'll only say that, as far as primary discard goes, I think about the content of my fridge, and the concept of deficit, I associate automatically to my neighbor's daughter (Sonia, sixteen, middle school) who spends her days howling Lady Gaga and Beyoncé songs. I can barely stand her, but only because she wears a C cup and likes to go around naked in the house.

I know nothing about macroeconomy, rating agencies and financial laws (I do know something about crack, but they told me not to write it in my cv), what I do know is that Proust keeps bragging me:

- "You know, you should find a job...".
- "If finding a job seems so easy to you, why don't you do it?".
- "Hey, I'm just a dog, I shouldn't even be talking to you".
- "Tomorrow I'll check you in a contest".
- "A contest? Those are for people who want to work for the State, old women with their poodles and anorexic girls looking for fame. I don't fit in any of those categories".
- "So how do you think we can solve the problem?".

Proust looks at me with hatred, growls, drools, and I really can't understand why. People on the street avoid me, my mom stopped calling, homeless people stopped asking for change and even the people at Mondolibri stopped trying to make me subscribe.

Where did I go wrong? All of the sudden Proust is on top of me, bites me, tries to rip off a shoulder, but I don't have the strength to react. I just let him do it. I think that at least this way he's going to get fed, and maybe my sacrifice will be worth something. A ritual suicide, this is what's going to give meaning to my useless life.
I'm losing blood, my head spins, I'm afraid. Maybe I'm really about to die.

I slowly lose conscience, and as everything goes dark, I can hear Proust chewing on me, and at one point he says: "You know what? You're even more disgusting than the discount kibbles".

Political communication: Fornero's responsibilities

In a passage of Vespa's new book Fornero has appeared more worried by the dress to wear, not taking into account the problems of the mon that she would have to face from that point on.

Yes, Vespa's new book is out, "The Palace and the square". Crisis, consent and protest from Mussolini to Beppe Grillo. Which, reading it this way, would seem something serious. It seems that there's a part, among many, dedicated to Fornero, about the night she was called by her friend Mario Monti to become Minister of Welfare, and the morning after, when - after booking the flight to Rome - she was struck by the question of questions. No, she didn't ask herself whether she would be capable. Worse, much worse. "I was choosing a black tailleur for the cerimony at the Quirinale, when Lucia Annunciata called. 'Remember that this day is forever. Choose the clothes you like most'." Who isn't a woman cannot understand. The question "what am I going to wear?" is something that can prevent you from sleeping at night, something existential, deep inside. Something that it's already important that Fornero after the phone call, histerical, didn't go to the nearest shopping center because, like all women, had "nothing to wear". It would seem that she relied for the choice on her 27 year old Romanian servant: "What is the dress you like most?" I asked her. I thought that if a girl liked it, everybody would like it."

Perhaps Fornero that day saw everything downhill, or easier. Perhaps the road she was about to start on appeared just incredibly stimulating and filled with hopes. Also filled with responsibilities, of course: but in a positive light. Because, she though, if I can manage to be liked by young people, then i will be liked by everyone.

But if we push the fast forward button until today, the image we see is very different. And we should have understood it from the first uncontrolled cry. The situation she found in front of her was not easy, nor downhill, and she realized that immediately. So much that being liked by young people, now, is of little interest to her. Actually she misses no occasion, with numerous gaffes, to offend the already weak spirits of a generation that goes out the door every day with open hands, waiting for grace from the sky that never comes. Generation that, paradoxally, relies on her (mistake) to understand where to start its future.

And of this dimentions, almost mystical, minister Fornero still doesn't have full consciousness: "If you're here I'll have to weigh each word" she told journalists last November the 5th, trying to get them out of the room in which she spoke in Turin, "someone talks for 40 minutes, saying calm and sensible things, and then a simple joke becomes the title of newspapers and creates useless discussions that go on for weeks". It's clear that she's losing, in a worrying manner, the contact with reality. In spite of those who say that "A politician must be very careful with communication, but it's true that the minimal error is not forgiven" that you can read all over during the last fe days: such a statement from those lips isn't just whining, not only paradoxal, but simply unacceptable.

Mills stated that it would be "realistic from a sociological point of view, morally right, and politically indispensable to ask much from men and women of power, and give them the responsibility of the course of specific events". Let's remain, in order to not go too far, on the "politically indispensable". We're talking about a technical government. An emergency, expertise government, which we haven't chose, we haven't discussed about: it was imposed from above for our salvation. It's clear that the role covered by who has power, in this historical moment, has an enormous value. Perhaps there is no complete perception of this, but the responsibility relative to the "work" matter in Italy has dimensions that aren't fully measurable: beyond the things that have been done, the feedbacl received from the other side of the wall is a mixture of hope, anger, fight, immaturity: a mix that is certainly not easy to manage, and a noticeable weight, bot from a human and a political point of view. Which Fornero has freely decided to take on herself, though.

The presence of journalists at the meeting of the Industrial Union on November the 5th, in spite of the attempt to make it "closed doors", is thanks to a journalist who in the name of all has stood up and said: "We're not leaving because we, as you, are doing are jobs and we have the right to do it". Every now and then we need to specify it. Because for most of us coming back to the redaction with an empty block notes is a bit like coming back in the evening from the land with an empty basket: you've thrown away a day of work, and nobody will pay you.

Cerchi lavoro in una #startup? Stai sbagliando metodo!

Caro Intervistato,

Poche, semplici cose:

  • Rispondere all’email entro secondi (ok minuti) e non ore

Looking for a job in a startup? You're doing it wrong

Dear Intervistato,

it's been a while since the last time I wrote and this time I have something to tell you. As you probably already know, technological startups are a great source of jobs.

This is because, as I wrote the last time, the only way to increase the "product" is to hire resources (programmers, but also market people) to insert in the company fast.

Let's talk about numbers: when a startup is financed, the investors expect the famous "10x in 5 years". Which means to increase the value of the company tenfold in only 5 years. Clearly these people aren't stupid, they invest only in very promising businesses and that have incredible growth rates, criticizing even the most complete and complex of business plans. And in every business plan that deserves that name there is a plan dedicated to hiring resources, their compensations and their raises. You must also think about the production bonuses and the stock options: not a single cent is given away if it's not written in there!

Of course you already know that the main enemy of a startup is the cash burn: when you need to grow so fast, you find yourself with a full bank account (a lot of cash from investors) and a group of good clients, paying and glad to do so, which is very scarce. The alchemy that transforms the venture capital money in paying clients is a magical, complex process, made of highs and lows. Making it means success.

Now back to us: to manage a 10x it's not enough to be two founders of the classical type, still in their garage rotting on keyboard and mouse! You need to constantly hire people, in the most various roles: programmers (junior, middle, senior) experts in any language (ok, not everyone, but mostly open languages), but also people that can take care of the commercial part, people for customer care and even people for administration and management.

The huge problem is how much it costs to find (even before hiring) the necessary resources! Today publishing an ad and making it circulate is extremely expensive, and out of the reach of many startups, and it doesn't even guarantee the success of the operation. To this you must also add the tempestivity of the operation: to make 10x in 5 years you must run fast, very fast, you can hear the ticking of the bomb that will explode at the deadline your financers have set for you.

This means you don't have the time and resources to write a nice "career opportunities" page, with the shining videos that many multinationals can be proud of at the moment.

Here you must fight, earn your grades on the field, if a junior gets in and does the things right, he can find himself projected in first line on the vital parts of the product, learning much faster than in any company of classic type.
And you can come to work in shorts (there's no time to decide the dress code), you hardly have colleagues that are older than 30 and the investors treat everyone with respect, interest and trust.

So, what do you need to do in order to work for a startup? Just a few, simple thing:

  • Forget about the usual "job finding website". Startuppers don't put their ads there!
  • Look up all the interesting startups on venture websites, or in the usual groups on Facebook and the App store top ten
  • Visit and study the website of the startup, understand what they do, understand if you can be really useful, there's no time to warm the chair
  • prepare the shortest presentation letter in history, write in two lines why you should be hired (because as a kid I always played with Legos)
  • Indicate your Linkedin, Twitter and, where available, your Deviant, Flickr and YouTube profiles
  • Answer to the email in a matter of seconds (alright, minutes), not hours

The result? Everything very fast: handshake, contract signing and you can start the following day, if not the same evening.

#Fornero & Co: bamboccioni sfigati e pure #choosy, ma coglioni no

Big babies, losers and choosy, but idiots really not

I don't know, after yet another unhappy expression, Fornero's "choosy", at what level the endurance limit of young people is. But sooner or later we'll inevitably explode. It would be about time, to raise our voices in a definite way once and for all.

During the last few years they have, in this order, devastated the education system from A to Z, made us calmly understand, or not, that we'll just dream about our retirement. Then we were addressed to as big babies, losers and choosy, all this without even counting the impatiente of law enforcement that every now and then massage us when we try to protest, as if they had ghostly black blocks in front of them.

Not bad if you consider that we should be the resource to invest in without delay in order to guarantee and define with foresight a pink future for our country. For years, since I have been capable of understanding politics and its speeches, I've heard that the most important task of this or that government, of this or that institution is first of all to listen to the needs of young people. But then at fact checking, who knows why, it doesn't happen. Or worse, we get to know things when everything's done.

As if the human and intellectual capital (yes, intellectual) of young people didn't count, nothing beyond the nice words of the opportunity moment, said aloud by the politician in charge. And yet I do not see all this "choosiness" among young people, one of which I am myself. I see people getting busy, that in spite of the tempting perspective of moving with everything they own in another country waiting for them with open arms actually remain, and fight. They fight the bureaucratic difficulties to open their own activity. They fight with nepotism, they fight with their dreams in which they have invested years, sacrifices, money, and that they do not want to give up, despite everything. Even if they risk hunger.

And then, even if you don't want to be choosy, among unpaid stages, misery wages and situations at the edge of exploitment, you end up being hungry anyway. And even if you want to, after working hard you realize the system doesn't value merit and competence. Secondary instruction and university don't integrate paths that can guide to the work market or to a formative introduction to it. So any way you turn it, you're at the same point, the nail.

So I think that, if in the rooms where decisions are made, those with many big armchairs, they had dedicated to young people and their needs at least a quarter of the time they dedicated talking about their own retirements, lifetime pay, and parliamentary bonuses, maybe, and I say maybe, we would have made a few steps further.

It's always a good thing to remind that patience has a limit, because Big Babies perhaps, maybe even a bit losers and choosy, but idiots truly not.

Parlare di lavoro all'Internet Festival 2012 #if12

Talking about jobs at the Internet Festival 2012 #if12

When I arrived in Florence I had less than 10 minutes to find the regional train to Pisa and meet other two adventure buddies. It's been a long time from the last time we've seen each other, even if we keep in touch almost daily thanks to social networks and not only.

So Maurizio, Andrea and I spent about an hour to get coordinated on the speech to do at the Superior School of Sant'Anna, which hosts part of the events of the Pisa 2012 Internet Festival. It's hot and after a bite to eat we get there. Sant'Anna is truly a beautiful place and many would have like to study in Pisa, because the Normale is an excellence of education in Italy. What do we talk about? Work, more precisely a project called Smartjob. Goal? Helping companies that are looking for new resources and helping those in search of a job to evaluate themselves and choose the best occasions. Why? Because Google, Linkedin, SN, CV aren't enough anymore, if they've ever been enough. Because often companies don't know what they're looking for and who looks for a job just rely on systems that aren't useful.

The room is full, a nice room with frescos. I drink some coffee while we show the work market data and the various trends, and people are amazed by the fact that last year in Italy 1.200.000 people found a stable occupation. We also lose too many jobs as well, though. This is because we're a country that doesn't accept change and that sometimes doesn't recognize its limits and doesn't know how to turn them in its favor. Smartjob also starts from here. There's an autoevalutation system for your competences, that helps you find a way to implement them - but that is another piece of the project - and that makes it easier to companies to understand what they need.

You must also understand how to tell your story, understand that today work is almost a charity, certain "offers" are offensive, it happened to us all, you must understand how to be active and proactive, understand what job you want to do, or the job area you're looking for, the serial sending of CVs is almost never useful, since often companies publish phoney ads, or read cvs by fishing them from a bunch. I know, it's not fair, but that's the way it is. But neither sending a bullet list of things we've done is very useful. Everybody talks about digital storytelling and it's time to apply it to ourselves, to tell what we want to do, tell our experiences, in the perspective of learning new things, gaining new competences and reaching results. Remembering always that we are the resource for the company and that giving us a job isn't a favor they're doing us. Smartjob is still in beta for a limited number of people, we've activated the blog www. smartjob.it, where you can subscribe, and the Facebook group.

The questions are many, two hours weren't enough and with some we continued during the aperitif. They asked us why we do it, what's our revenue. Smartjob is free for everyone, we only want to do something and stop talking. It's great and we're relaxed at dinner. The morning is even better, since we buy Il Tirreno, there was a journalist the day earlier and we're on the frist page. We say goodbye at the trai station until next time. One last thing: we're not a startup. Doing business is something different for us.
