Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Debora Serracchiani

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Debora Serracchiani, Italian lawyer and politician, Member of the European Parliament on behalf of the Democratic Party and member of the group Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.

We asked Debora her opinion about the current situation of the Italian Government. She thinks that the Prime Minister's downhill trend is there for all to see, and because of his inability to take care of his personal matters instead of the country's problems, Italy as well is being dragged down with him.
There is certainly the need for change, the need for new figures, and hopefully change will happen as soon as possible. [video]

Another question we asked Debora was about her practical proposals for young people's occupational future.
First of all, in her opionion it is necessary to intervene on how people enter the world of work, not on how people exit it. Secondly the types of available contracts are way too many and misused, also and mostly because they aren't controlled in any way.
Her proposals would be: more control on the types of contracts, creating an initial permanent contract that can be modified based on length of service and the contribution to the company, paying  fixed term employees more than those with a permanent contract, making social safety nets better and stimulating companies into hiring young people by lowering the amount of social security contributions they have to pay. [video]

We asked Debora how her financial manneuver would have been: first of all, she wouldn't have waited November 2011 to let the country know that the situation was severe enough to make some unpopular decisions necessary.
The main points on which she would have intervened would have been making citizens that can afford paying more taxes actually contribute more, making some intensive operations on tax evasion, transfering taxes on assets and reducing those of who works and produces, giving the possibility to small and very small companies to access credit with facilitations, cutting off the costs of politics and finally reducing taxes. [video]

Debora has also expressed her opinion about the use of social tools in political communication: she thinks that it is necessary to invest in the web, but at the same time maintain a strong contact with people and territory. [video]

We have also asked what she thinks about the "occupy" movements and the tendency of citizens to get hold of politics again. In her opinion these are important movements, that treat topics that not only regard Europe, but the whole world, such as finance, political choices for the protection of banks and insurances.
Debora has also specified she doesn't agree with all positions: as for the debt issue, her sense of responsibility and the desire to make it a better country bring her to also take care of a debt that she has only inherited, and she hasn't contributed to create. [video]

As for Matteo Renzi, Debora thinks he is a resource for PD, he is the administrator of an important city who has pointed out the topic of the rechange of the political class.
She shares some of his ideas and discusses others, but in the end it is important to discuss inside the same party, and discuss ideas: not surnames or people. [video]

We asked Debora what her opinion about Beppe Grillo is: even though she doesn't share some extreme positions of his, she has stressed that Grillo has been dealing with many important matters, first of all the short circuit between society, banks and finance.
The Democratic Party should ask itself why it can't interact with those who vote Grillo, especially because there are many points on which the two movements agree: she doesn't hold him responsible for the defeats her party has suffered, she thinks the Democratic Party should start talking to those who vote him. [video]

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details, insights and information than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Cristiana Alicata

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Cristiana Alicata, Fiat engineer and member of the Democratic Party since its foundation, and supporter of the LGBT community.

First of all Cristiana has expressed her opinion about the use of social networks by politicians. She has been keeping a blog since 2006 and has been present on Facebook for 2 years, which is the reason why she has been accused by her party. This proves that the party is incoherent when dealing with social tool, which aren't considered important: when journalists transform their content into press releases, however, they start to be considered dangerous. She reads and answers all comments on the blog, unlike other politicians that only use the blog to publish press releases, not to create dialogue with the voters. [video]

We talked about young people and the fact that they have little space to emerge in a context structured in such a hierarchical manner as the party is: Cristiana is against Veltroni's idea of a liquid party, which in her opinion only brings to the leadership of a single person, exactly like it happened for PDL.
Her idea is of an organized party, that will enhance competence and that is permeable towards the outside, so that they can engage those people who aren't inside the party, but still vote and participate to manifestations: this might be a way to make young people participate and be useful to the party. [video]

The party should be founded on the constructively used dissent, a condition that is currently not present. It is necessary to take this step because the world isn't alligned anymore, reality is liquid and in every one of us there are several complex aspects that coexist and contribute to identify the individual. Such a liquid reality, in Cristiana's opinion, can only be interpreted by a solid and very well organized party. [video]

We asked Cristiana whether young people will be able to express their own opinion, and she thinks that in order to reach this goal they will have to abandon schemes, another condition that isn't present. What often happens is that they think that it is easier to get support from above, rather than thinking that there might be someone supporting from below. Young people will be free when they will start to interpret their time, and this will mean that they'll have to start saying no's. [video]

As for the Democratic Party, Cristiana thinks that it would be very important for Bersani to use the internal resources that actually can talk with a part of the voters with which he and the apparatus cannot communicate.

A new political class, prepared and diffused, is necessary: starting from the small mountain town in the North to the small seaside town in Sicily. Maybe with this generation it will be possible to reach an European level in city administration: in her opinion to administrate doesn't only mean to take decisions, but pushing the cities towards change. Determining citizens to recycle would bring to a decrease of tons per day of the size of landfills and would allow incinerators only to burn trash that won't produce dangerous fumes. Eliminating architectonical barriers and building more bicycle paths would allow to decongest traffic and allowing disabled people in wheelchairs to live their city. [video]

In the end we asked Cristiana which is her idea about what should be the law regarding civil unions, and her package is constituted by marriage, adoptions, recognition of rainbow families and decent laws to make entering the work market for transsexuals easier.
Several times the Catholic Church has expressed negative opinions towards these kinds of measures, but in Cristiana's opinion the Church has the right to say whatever it wants: it's the secular State that should decide based on the Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and what is done in every civilized country in the world. [video]

We also talked about same sex parents families, invisible building, the distribution of resources, young people and politics.

I invite everyone to view the full interview, surely richer in insight than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

I giovani al timone di domani

Ormai ci siamo.

Senza timori.

The young people leading tomorrow's politics

We're almost there. It's the last days of this elections campaign, to decide the candidate for the center-left coalition, which has managed in the difficult task to bring young people closer to politics. But the path is still very long.

Of this beautiful and aggressive battle one thing is obvious: the youth participation. We've seen it in the photographs, we've read it in blogs and statuses, we've understood it on the streets, we've seen it during the voting, volunteering or true sustainers.

Beyond everything, and this I must say, it seems to me like the most comforting thing. The future. And independently of who the winner will be, this is where we need to start from, since for years we've talked about young people getting more and more away from politics.

But politics shouldn't get too excited. Because it's not getting closer TO young people. It's young people that have started to take it back and the tools that it offers, too. And among those tools, among doing politics actively, there's the vote. And votes can change. So the leading class should take the opportunity right away.

The other good news is that the center-right, our best enemies (and it's not negative, it's just quoting Herzog's movie) are starting to get more and more space back, the right to choose and decide. it happened during the last few days in Modena and Bologna where some exponents of the Young Italy (referring to PDL) have revenged the right to not be robbed of the primary elections.

But there aren't just the young people of PDL, who ask for primaries and right to choose, and there aren't just those of center-left active behind the various candidates or running to vote to choose the next premier candidate. A good part of our country is represented now by the children of immigrants. The so called second generation. The ones born in our country. Then there are those who live here since they were children (and we'll talk about it soon on Intervistato.com). They all are Italians just like us, sometimes even more Italian than we are, who among their requests (that come from good part of society anyway) is the right to citizenship. So the possibility to actively participate to the democratic life of the country. The right to choose and not simply suffer others' decisions.

Many are friends, lovers, boyfriends and girlfriends of the first and the latter. Well, this, I believe, will be a good point in common to restart with tomorrow's politiics. In spite of the differences of ideas and the match that will ensue (healthy in a democracy) we hope that recent story taught to be foreseeing and has cancelled the bad habit of short term for interest, and that the political class, the one of the future, and the one that is growing up right now, starts to listen and recognize the requests and rights of young people, regardless of their skin color and the origin of their family.

Lastly, look to the right and the left. Without fears. We must regain the capacity of fighting about ideas, accepting them when they're good, even if they come from the other side. Then we'll have a future. Otherwise it will all be useless, and that joy we now feel will be again premature.

Now we just need to wait for the end of the primaries of center-left and PDL and see what will come out of it, and what direction we'll take. The path seems good, but long, and the next months will tell if we'll have to chance to make it shorter.

#Fornero & Co: bamboccioni sfigati e pure #choosy, ma coglioni no

Big babies, losers and choosy, but idiots really not

I don't know, after yet another unhappy expression, Fornero's "choosy", at what level the endurance limit of young people is. But sooner or later we'll inevitably explode. It would be about time, to raise our voices in a definite way once and for all.

During the last few years they have, in this order, devastated the education system from A to Z, made us calmly understand, or not, that we'll just dream about our retirement. Then we were addressed to as big babies, losers and choosy, all this without even counting the impatiente of law enforcement that every now and then massage us when we try to protest, as if they had ghostly black blocks in front of them.

Not bad if you consider that we should be the resource to invest in without delay in order to guarantee and define with foresight a pink future for our country. For years, since I have been capable of understanding politics and its speeches, I've heard that the most important task of this or that government, of this or that institution is first of all to listen to the needs of young people. But then at fact checking, who knows why, it doesn't happen. Or worse, we get to know things when everything's done.

As if the human and intellectual capital (yes, intellectual) of young people didn't count, nothing beyond the nice words of the opportunity moment, said aloud by the politician in charge. And yet I do not see all this "choosiness" among young people, one of which I am myself. I see people getting busy, that in spite of the tempting perspective of moving with everything they own in another country waiting for them with open arms actually remain, and fight. They fight the bureaucratic difficulties to open their own activity. They fight with nepotism, they fight with their dreams in which they have invested years, sacrifices, money, and that they do not want to give up, despite everything. Even if they risk hunger.

And then, even if you don't want to be choosy, among unpaid stages, misery wages and situations at the edge of exploitment, you end up being hungry anyway. And even if you want to, after working hard you realize the system doesn't value merit and competence. Secondary instruction and university don't integrate paths that can guide to the work market or to a formative introduction to it. So any way you turn it, you're at the same point, the nail.

So I think that, if in the rooms where decisions are made, those with many big armchairs, they had dedicated to young people and their needs at least a quarter of the time they dedicated talking about their own retirements, lifetime pay, and parliamentary bonuses, maybe, and I say maybe, we would have made a few steps further.

It's always a good thing to remind that patience has a limit, because Big Babies perhaps, maybe even a bit losers and choosy, but idiots truly not.

Io personalmente no.

Fornero, choosy young people and the importance of apparences

All this scandal about #choosy is enough.
It's not nice, it's not fair, but Minister Fornero is right: these times who is looking for a job can't be too exigent.
(This doesn't mean that you have to deal with it: that, never. But you musn't discard before you try. Anything is better than nothing, they say in the UK: especially if anything is a starting point, not a goal to reach).
I don't understand why one should be offended by this simple constatation of facts. If someone has never been choosy, evidently the matter doesn't regard him. Who is looking for the perfect job didn't need Fornero to understand that now isn't the right time.
That being said, there's still one thing: the suspicion with which in Italy we look at carrier changes.

Let me explain.
In Berlin (or in London, or New York), the possibility of doing jobs that aren't at the level of one's cv or previous job is normal and widely accepted.
And not only to face immediate needs.
I know paintors who served in restaurants to survive the month, but also journalists who were momentarily unemployed that didn't hesitate to recycle themselves as sellers, or architects who work in call centers waiting for a new job.
Now I'd like to ask: have you ever seen something like this in Italy?

Personally I haven't.
Here, if a professional who doesn't have a job, accepts a lower profile job, it is seen inevitably as a defeat.
Because here flexibility has never existed, and now that is has forcefully entered our daily routine, it is seen always as a threat and never an opportunity.

We feel defined by our job, maybe because we're the only country in the world (perhaps together with Japan, to be honest) in which the concept of "good image", and we give a lot - too much - importance to "What will people say?".

E then because we're a country used to advance not for merit but for age, and never ever give up a privilege we gave for granted.
And today we discover that nothing is forever, in spite of DeBeers ads.
And this is the realty we need to deal with, whether like it or not.

Forced to return: when the crisis brings you to the Start

A bench at the bus station, an offered cigarette, a spontaneous chat about the difficulties of the moment, the crisis and the uncertainties of tomorrow. A simple story, as many others, the one that I found in front of me. And in the easy simplicity with which you can find them is all the drama.

I'm sitting on a bench on the 4th platform of the bus station in Modena. The 4th line is the one that manages the 500 intercity linea Carpi-Modena, on which every time a whole bunch of people gets on, so many that not even Babel. It's almost midday and the day is probably the first one that's just a bit warmed by the sun. I'm just sitting there staring at the joyful jumping of the first generation of new Italians, music in their ears, when in front of my eyes a hand holding a Winston blue packet of cigarettes appears. One cigarette is just out of the line and is being offered to me. I take it even before I identify the face to which the hand belongs.

I put it in my mouth and look upon him: he's a guy in his thirties, drop crotch jeans, a street-skate style sweatshirt, sunglasses and a small stud in his ear. Hi breath smells of alcohol when it's still not even midday. In his other hand he's holding a can of Weiss. I take off my earplugs, thank him and light mi cigarette almost at the same time as him. I hear him mutter something, interrupted by a sob. In his hand he's now holding a piece of paper bent in two, on which he histerically writes numbers that he copies from the mobile phone on the bench. I observe him discreetly. His sobbing turns out to be a badly hidden cry. He takes his phone and starts composing a number. I don't understand why he copies and then composes when he could just call, but I don't ask questions.

When on the other side he gets an answer, I hear him talk about work, or actually about getting fired. I can't make it, he says. He establishes times, in a month or two he could get the anticipated amount. He repeats the same words in the following 4 calls he does. While I watch him with the corner of my eye, I notice tears falling down from underneath his sunglasses. I start feeling uncomfortable, when he realizes I'm looking at him. He introduces himself as M, and so I answer with my name. He feels like giving an explanation and he tells me he's been fired. Cuts, from what I understand, it's something recent, as he tells me. Now he's back on the rent and he has a landlord who obviously wants what is due.

Every word is accompanied by the smell of beer that doesn't quite fit with the time and is quite disturbing to my nose. Even with a salary, between expenses and rent, he barely managed to get to the end of the month, and extras or fun have only been an illusion during the last couple of years. He was counting on a small raise on his salary this year, and he received an invitation to leave his place instead. Now M. has written on that piece of paper a list of friends and acquaintances to which he would try to ask for a little loan to calm the landlord and ge some time to find a new job, but until now everyone said no and now there are only two other numbers to play on the compassion roulette. If these ones will also say no, he'll have to call home. M. isn't from Modena, he's from the center-south. Two years ago he had come here to grab the opportunity of a job, even if modest, that he couldn't even have dreamed of where he came from. Now he's here, without a job and risking to be evicted.

While he sobs he tells me that if he won't find a solution he'll really be forced to call home, maybe even go back there. For him calling home and admitting the situation is a bit like declaring a failure, which he's not willing to accept. He's afraid of the disappointment that he would give his parents, and he also has a girlfriend. Even if with difficulties, M. wanted to start a life here in Modena. But the tape is rewinding and the risk is that he'll have to start again with a thousand uncertainties and broken dreams. Simple dreams, not only M's, but of an entire generation, ours, that with dynamics more or less similar from M's stories, I'm sure they'll empathize.

Who is writing has done so and has felt the need, even if in a simple manner, to tell you this brief episode. M. gets up asking for the time. It's still 20 minutes before the bus that will take him home arrives. I don't give up, he says with a smile, and now I'll go get a pizza. We can't even afford the luxury of immagining capitulation, but on the other side it's time that they start giving us clear and honest answers about what will be our future, because no one is willing to go on like this.
