Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Carlo Massarini

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Carlo Massarini, renown Italian tv journalist: we talked about the origins of the program MediaMente, the future of the integration of old and new media, and the causes of the Italian delay as for the approach of brands and politicians to social networks.

First of all we asked how MediaMente was born: it was a happy intuition of the vice-director of Video Sapere, afterwards Rai Educational, Renato Palascandalo. Towards the end of 1994, he had seen in the "mist" and anticipated the transofrmation of communication means that we have seen during the last few years. The result has been a proper public service, that told the fundamental evolution of the world of communication, and the consequences on behaviors and lifestyles. [video]

We asked Carlo for his opinion about the statements of Minister Severino, who believes the Internet should have more rules and controls. He believes the web per se, as all situations that are born and grown free, doesn't need any rules. There's a penal code, and when somebody breaks it, they should be judged accordingly: the code is sufficiently complete and experimented to be valid for Internet as well. Unfortunatelly in our contemporary society there's a great tendency to keep Internet under control, because it is after all an instrument of freedom. [video]

We asked whether in Italy there is space for technological divulgation programs, but in Carlo's opinion there isn't any.  Watching the programs it is clear that at the moment there's nothing about this matter, except for some rare programs on satellite. Carlo has tried to make agreements with Rai to make such a program, but there's a chronic lack of attention towards scientific and technological information in Italy. [video]

He believes that the vision is lacking, as it has been lacking for Italian politicians during the last 15 years, since they haven't contributed, helped nor made it easier to diffuse the use of Internet in Italy, not to speak about broadband. When a vision of the future is lacking, you talk about the present as if it was the near future, but a real vision of what's going to happen in 5 or 10 years in non existent. [video]

The non adequacy of the approach of politicians and brands to the web has brought in several cases to proper crisis: Carlo believes we're in the middle of a swamp, a passage phase created by the irruption of a new communication system that has as a direct consequence the disintermediation and the creation of a direct connection between consumers and brands, voters and politicians, producers and clients. On the one side we have a world of which we knew  the good and the bad, on the other a world of which we see the potential, but that still needs to be expressed, and an integration is very difficult. [video]

Another question we asked Carlo regards the possibility of an integration between TV and new media: in Carlo's opinion, a true integration is not even possible. Of course, a superficial one would be doable: you can make programs on the Internet and on TV, or programs on the web that have TV value (even though limited), but a true integration of the two systems isn't possible because they're born with different characteristis, one as a personal media, the other as a mass media. It would be like crossing two things that are genetically different. [video]

Finally we asked Carlo how he thinks that the way to use social media in case of revolutions and social movements will change, in the light of the unicity of the Arab Spring as a non replicable phenomenon: Carlo says that it will evolve like the art of war, between information and counterinformation. It's about spreading the weapons and going forward with a technological guerrilla. [video]

Of course, I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details than my brief synthesis!

Enjoy!

Prossimamente: Carlo Massarini

Coming up soon: Carlo Massarini

Tomorrow we'll have the pleasure of interviewing Carlo Massarini, renown Italian journalist and TV conductor.

Born in La Spezia in 1952, he moved with his family to Canada, following his father who was a diplomatic. Back in Rome, he studies medicine but he abandons his studies to dedicate himself to music and radio.

In the 70s he conducts the rock and pop music show "Per voi giovani" for Radio Rai, together with other conductors. He then conducted the evening shows Popoff and Radio 2 21.29 in which he proposed unknown artists such as Tom Waits, Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell and especially Jackson Browne, that Massaroni has the merit of introducing to Italy by translating some texts in Italian. A few years later Massarini himself will accompany him in the first Italian concerts and interview him with some amazing Rome backgrounds. During these years he writes for Popster and Rolling Stone.

From 1981 to 1984 he has been the conductor and author of Mister Fantasy, Rai Uno show that lasted more than 150 airings, dedicated to videoart and videoclip. In 1986 he conducted, on the same channel, the program Non necessariamente, a pioneering project of "television technological variety", that used mixted cinema, video and computer graphics techniques.

He co-conducted the Sanremo Festival both in 1987 (with Pippo Baudo) and in 1988 (with Miguel Bosè and Gabriella Carlucci). In both editions he curated the presentations of the direct streaming from the new Palarock, from which the several international stars that are invited as guests to the Festival perform.

From 1995 to 2002 he conducts the show MediaMente, a Rai Educational production about Internet and new technologies.

In 2009, 25 years after the last episode of Mister Fantasy he published Dear Mister Fantasy, a photobook about the 70s and 80s that he lived as a photographer and musical journalist. In the book there are numerous encounters with Italian and foreign artists. For the title of the book he got inspiration from the song with the same name by Traffic, his favourite rock band at that time.

In 2010 he does six special episodes of Mister Fantasy called Mister Fantasy R&R, Reload & Rewind, set at the MAXXI in Rome and aired by Rai Sat Extra.

From January the 10th 2011 he conducts the show Cool Tour, on air daily on Rai 5 and that has to do with web, cinema, arts, fashion, dance, music and theatre. The program has its central base at the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan and is focused mainly on the new tendencies of the city.

As always, we look forward to your questions, which you can send us via the form below!

Eleventh guest of Intervistato Journalism Festival, directly from the Perugia festival, was Massimo Mantellini, Italian journalist and author of the blog Manteblog.

We asked him his insights about the Festival. The experience is extremely positive and very chaotic, given the enormous quantity of stimuli. He was also very impressed by the great presence of young people and simple curious that throught the Festival try to understand and enter the mechanisms of journalism.

We also asked which panels have impressed him most. His choice fell on Andy Carvin's panel, and Andy will also be among the next interviews we'll be publishing. [video]

We also talked about paths and tools old and new that don't necessarily need to collide, but could actually wind up going in different directions. Massimo thinks that journalism today is by all accounts better than what it was in the past. [video]

I invite you to view the video interview for more details.

10minuticon Arianna Bassoli @karmanet

Buona visione!

10 minutes with Arianna Bassoli

During this interview with Arianna Bassoli, Italian startupper and interaction designer, we've talked about her professional background, the path that led her to the Ministry of Instruction and about her startup, Frestyl.

First of all we asked Arianna how she got to be part of the team of young people constituted by the Minister Profumo: after seeing the notice on Facebook, she discovered that they were looking for a doctorate in the same field she had done hers, so after sending her CV she was contacted for an interview, where she also understood what role she was going to cover. [video]

Arianna studied Communication Sciences in Siena, she graduated in Mass Communication with the intent of starting a carreer in the fields of journalism and television. In time she got more and more interested in new media and the web, and after university she started working in a research center in Dublin, the MediaLab Europe, partner of the MIT MediaLab, working on interaction design. There she started projecting mobile interfaces, which have to do with music. Afterwards she got a doctorate in Management of Information Systems at the London School of Economics[video]

We asked Aranna what will the main points of the digital agenda be, especially during the Monti government. The themes are numerous, and the team is identifying the areas and the projects on which they will be working: what's certain is that they will have an important role in the realization of interfaces, technological projects and international integration. [video]

There has been a lot of talking about startups, social innovation, infrastructures, open data: in Arianna's opinion the Government should exploit the energy of Italian startups and support them with facilitations when it comes to bureaucracy, projects, but most of all creating a long term plan that will allow the creation of new businesses and jobs.

It's a great opportunity to gamble on a growing phenomenon and transform it in growth, both from the social and the economical point of view. The diffusion of broadband, for example, brings points of GDP a year. The digital agenda will include, among its most important points, broadband and the last mile: it is the opportunity to develop access to new technologies, supported by the European Union. [video]

We asked Arianna what the most important goals would be, at least for the next 6 - 12 months. In her opinion there are already a lot of initiatives that should be unlocked, especially those that have to do with e-government, and the communication should be greatly improved. Another important aspect would be contributing to make Italy's reputation better, emphasizing those positive aspects that at the moment aren't adequately publicized. [video]

Many initiatives have rough starts because of bureaucratic problems, and there's also the law changes and the related technical timing to implement those changes to consider. Simplifying processes is fundamental to make opening and making startups and businesses growth easier. Moreover, at the moment there is no government support that is capable of giving correct information and instructions to those who want to go on this path, from a practical point of view. [video]

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details and insights than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Prossimamente: Massimo Mantellini @mante

Coming up soon: Massimo Mantellini

Our next interviewee is Massimo Mantellini, who has been a reference point for years for the topics regarding technology and Internet, both on the web and on printed magazines.

Massimo Mantellini has been writing about Internet and technology for more than a decade both on the web and on magazines, talking in particular about the topics of the right to access, privacy and web politics.

He has been writing for Punto Informatico since it opened, in 1996, and he also collaborates with l'Espresso. In 2001 he started his personal blog, Manteblog, which is one of the most read technology blogs in Italy. In 2010 he starts a technology blog for ilpost.it, a web newspaper directed by Luca Sofri.

For Telecom Italia he curates Eraclito, a web based meeting point for company topics and the Italian Internet web, defined as a communication experiment which has the goal to represent the "panta rei" of the themes about Telecom Italia and the web, starting from the conversations online and from information that was provided by the company itself or appeared on various media.

Massimo has kept for years editorials for monthly issues such as Internet Magazine and Internet News, and has written for a long time for Nòva24, Il Sole 24 Ore's technology insert. He will also be a guest and speaker at the International Journalism Festival this year.

Well known for the depth and accuracy with which he describes the fast changes of the web and its uses, he has recently published and interesting post for Punto Informatico about Twitter, of which we publish here a fragment:

"Twitter's success, unlike what happened to Facebook, seems to pass through a broadcast logic with a hint of improbable interaction: the platform gains value and attention not when - as its founders thought in the beginning - there's the construction of a web of personal relationships mediated by a sort of enlarged SMS system, but through the introduction of a series of strong emittents, capable of capturing the public's attention. Around them a vast popular cloud of references and short comments, hashtags and replays that are easy to do but of scarce communicative value since the system itself isn't quite fit for an organic and traceable conversation. Designed as a social platform for small groups, Twitter - as often happens to creatures exposed to the users' prevalent uses - has become a dominantly informative feed, very wide and very fast, but with scarce relational attitudes."

We'll have the chance to talk about Internet, new technologies and how these impact society, businesses, but also single users in a broad scenario.

Of course, if you want to propose a question, simply fill in the form above!

10minuticon Antonio Lupetti @woork

Buona visione!

Maria Petrescu

10 minutes with Antonio Lupetti

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Antonio Lupetti, famous Italian blogger and author of Woorkup.com.

Woorkup was born two years ago as a web design tutorial site, but in time Antonio started widening the topics horizon to include Internet, social media and technology. Initially his blog was entirely in English, and only after a while he started posting in Italian as well. Italian posts are now the majority inside Woorkup.com.

The change happened because Antonio thinks there's too little content of this type in Italy, and getting traffic is quite easy for a blog like Woorkup, which already has a stable and wide user base. The shift was extremely useful and has had an unexpected success: the traffic from Italy increased drastically, also thanks to great positioning on Google.

Woorkup's numbers are quite interesting: 15.000 visits/day mostly from Italian users, but English posts still bring many readers from abroad. When he published an infographic about Google's acquisition, reposted by FastCompany, the visits reached a peak of 50.000/day. [video]

The future perspectives consist in reinforcing Woorkup's leadership in Italy and increasing the visits: Italy has some editorial products with several authors contributing to write the articles, but Antonio wants to bring ahead the concept of "single man blog". Many people have shown interest in writing on Woorkup, so it is reasonable to think that Woorkup will become a real magazine, with its own editorial staff, but at least for now Antonio is the only author of posts and videoposts on Woorkup. [video]

In his opinion the times are ripe for magazines like Mashable or Techcrunch: in Italy there aren't many blogs linked to one single figure that have great visibility and make great numbers. Woorkup manages to do that, and could constitute the lever to create a strong Italian magazine.
Of course the number of visits must be weighted since the Italian market is much smaller, and whoever is interested in technology usually goes directly to the original, American sources. [video]

The English posts have the most visits when they have innovative content, such as infographics, while general posts are the most read by Italian users. There is no hub that can constitute the center of information to aggregate the content: the goal is to transform Woorkup in this direction, without leaving out English posts. [video]

We asked Antonio what his sources are: mostly official blogs of some important websites and magazines, such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, Foursquare, but also Huffington Post and Business Insider. One interesting aspect is the different approach Italian readers have in the interaction with websites, there's a tendency to leave more comments than on an English post, that usually get shared a lot on social media. [video]

We finished with the perspectives for the future: Antonio wants to concentrate on multimedia news, so he's developing a video format meant to get more traffic through YouTube and Vimeo.

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in information and insight than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | David Orban 2/2

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing David Orban, startupper and visionary currently CEO of dotsub.com.

In this second part of the interview we talked about free and open knowledge with the example of the publication of the 1918 flu genoma online. In David's opinion freedom is a complicated and delicate process. There are people who are not fully equipped and people who are better equipped to understand what the consequences of the misuse of certain information can be, even though we must never stop asking ourselves in what limits it is right that the second group decides for the first, in a democratic system. [video]

David has also talked about the Internet of things, which is totally dependent on pre-existing conditions: a widespread, fast and reliable network, reliable and cheap energy sources and applications. Just as the personal computer found its killer app in the word processor and the electronic spreadsheet, the Internet of things must find its killer app to finally explode. [video]

Talking about publishing, David has pointed out that the transformation of the storage of knowledge on paper into a more dynamically accessible electronic form will accelerate enormously in the next few years. The book, released from the limitations and constraints that are embedded in the publishing process, will now be able to take new forms.
Amazon.com is already selling 10 page ebooks at a very low price, which wouldn't be possible with traditional books for purely economical reasons. [video]

In his opinion imposing a maximum possible discount is an arbitrary restriction to trade and free initiative and it has no reason to exist.
Different taxation for physical books and ebooks is already an obstacle: in many countries, Italy included, physical books have a very small or zero VAT, while ebooks are equated to software and are taxed with 20% VAT (21% in conformity with the recent financial maneuver). [video]

I asked David what we should expect from the next 10 years, in what way technology will make our lives better.
David has structured his answer in three big parts: the production of clean energy in a distributed manner, with solar pannels that are getting more and more efficient; transportation, which will radically change the way we think of cars today; experiences and experiments in everybody's lives, such as travelling and participating in other communities will become very common and it will not represent losing your roots. [video]

Of course David has answered your questions, so I invite everyone to watch the full interview, surely richer and more informative than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!
