10minuticon Emma D'aquino

Buona visione!

10minuteswith Emma D'aquino

Firstly we asked Emma what the consideration is, in the world of massmedia information, of the comments and suggestions from social networks, and whether these are only seen as just another broadcasting channel. If it's news, then comments aren't considered. If it's a report, then yes, but it depends on the time and space available. The journalist must take that as well into account when preparing pieces.

We asked Emma whether she agrees with RAI's internal politics: she believes that the political pressures are an old story, but they have always been there and always will be. She trusts the new Administration Council to do some good work, since they have started so well.

Another question regards the relevance of the morbidity of the news in the choice of the news agenda: Emma explained that the fashion of morbid news has started with the Cogne crime, and continued with articles and shows done and redone even when the details were only a few. Unfortunately the news must excite the immagination of the audience, even when it's not crimes: Emma made the example of Kate Middleton's topless pictures, that have occupied the TG in the days following the publication of the news.

Emma specified that, as all newspapers and televisions, RAI takes audience into account, and in particular the number of people who synthonize on the TG when it goes on air. Crime always gets a high share, and when a piece of news is hot you can't ignore it. Of course, this is how you satisfy the viewers' requests, who want to see, hear and read that kind of news, but fortunately that's not the only thing that is taken into account, and the TG tackles much wider topics.

As for the integration of new and old media, Emma believes it's a possible scenario. It is already being done, in a certain way, when an even is covered thanks to new means and technologies. The contents generated by the audience are absorbed and integrated in some pieces, but much more could be done to make the television even more interactive.

Very often journalism is seen as a difficult and elitary profession, because it doesn't allow those who choose it as their only job to maintain themselves. It attracts many young people, but the economic crisis has a great influence on the real availability of jobs. She doesn't feel like discouraging those who want to start on this path, all the contrary. She believes one must follow their inclinations and dreams, without thinking about the pessimistic comments.

Another question we asked Emma regards the Foreign Affairs and Economy sections, starting from the disposition of the sections themselves inside newspapers. We asked whether the perception Italians have of the economic and political situation in Europe is the same other EU citizens have. Emma believes these topics are very well covered, but if a TG lasts 29 minutes, you need to divide the time and dedicate more or less space to one news or the other. This way the foreign politics pieces are one, maybe two. There are also times when these divisions aren't valid anymore, like 9/11 and Saddam's death.

Finally we talked about the exodus of journalists from Rai: Emma confessed she hopes that there will be space for everyone, and that there won't be any exodus, because it always means defeat. Those who decide to go away and find space elsewhere are free to do so, and it is right that they can do it with serenity, if they think they can do better differently somewhere else.

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

10minuticon Elisa Motterle @downtowndoll

Buona visione!

10minuteswith Elisa Motterle

Some time ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Elisa Motterle, Web Fashion Editor and Writer in Giorgio Armani, and renown Italian fashion blogger.

First of all we asked Elisa how she started writing about fashion: after a stage in Condé Nast, she started working for Yoox as a fashion editor, for the product thematic selection and copywriting. They were extremely short and concise texts, so a lot of what there was to say remained unwritten. Elisa has felt the need to open a blog where to give voice to what remained cut out. [video]

The way of working in the world of fashion has suffered an enormous fragmentation, which has evolved together with the fragmentation of available online channels: if until a few years ago it would have been sufficient to have a page with a hub function, now the online presence must be much more capillar. In particular, we have assisted to the fragmentation of functions various social cover, and the type of specific content that is published on each channel. [video]

We asked Elisa what she thinks about fashion blogging, and how it can be sustained economically: given her studies and experience, she confessed she sometimes finds baffling to see certain improvised realities, but at the same time she realizes that the public isn't impressed by preparation, but rather by nice graphics and a smart marketing plan. She believes it is vital, for anyone who wants to start this kind of activity, to build an ubiquous online web to increase followers, and at the same time build journalistic relationships with editors. Very often blogs become a promotional channel in disguise, that brands love because they have a more "genuine" feel that the publiredactional. [video]

Another question we asked Elisa is about the use that brands make of these types of tools: clearly they are a new tendency, and new tendencies are what fashion lives of. Inviting a blogger to a fashionwalk sends a clear message: the brand is "cool", young, they've understood where the market is going. Bloggers, moreover, are able to attract a part of young consumers to a product that isn't so young, especially for a matter of price. Loyalty is built, though, and it translates in the purchase of a cosmetic by the same brand, for example. [video]

Finally we asked how the various offline and online channels are integrated in the case of luxury brands: it is a true challenge, because it becomes necessary to get nearer to the public and still maintain the distance that characterizes the luxury product. Fashion bloggers can act as a junction, since they are seen by the public as reference figures. In any case, the positioning and the messages published on social media must be well calibrated by the digital division together with marketing, because "to get near is one thing, to exagerate is extremely easy". [video]

We also talked about Burberry, an extremely interesting case study, and Elisa's current work in Giorgio Armani.

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis!

Enjoy!

10minuticon Arianna Chieli @ariannachieli

[video]

Invito tutti naturalmente a visionare l'intervista integrale, molto ricca di dettagli e riflessioni.

Buona visione!

10minuteswith Arianna Chieli

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Arianna Chieli, Italian journalist and fashion blogger, founder of Fashion BlaBla and of the Fashion Camp.

First of all we asked how her interest for fashion sparkled and how she has become a fashion blogger. The two things didn't go together: at the end of the 90s she founded her first web agency, doing some extremely innovating experimentations. Her love for fashion was there from the beginning, but given her cultural background, to work with this kind of topic was considered trivial, which is why she decided she wanted to be a newsreporter. When she arrived at Corriere della Sera, however, she was assigned to fashion, and she could finally unite her two great passions: fashion and technology. [video]

Arianna doesn't believe it is possible to live working as a fashion blogger: her own blog, that is actually open to many collaborations, doesn't monetize enough for her to live on. However, the money one earns with consultancies actually allows you to live: the blog isn't enough, but if you're good you can make it, as the American market demonstrates. [video]

We're still in the age of exchange: the brand gives the product and the blogger writes about it. It's something that has always been done with national magazines, but there's a strong experimentation territory here, very different from traditional forms of advertising. The moment the brands will understand that the cost per contact of a blogger is cheaper than the cost per contact of any newspaper, something might change. [video]

We asked what guarantees the truth of what is written when the product that is being reviewed was actually given as a gift: she believes it's the test itself. There's a great responsibility towards the people who read you, and you must respect a professional deontology. To describe a product and give an opinion, you must try it out first, and this is a rule that is particularly true for beauty products.

As for clothing, a direct mediation is required: touching the fabrics, talking with the designer, hearing the story, mediating through experience. The blogger becomes a point of mediated contact, who gives an interpretation through a personal point of view. [video]

We asked Arianna what Fashion Bla Bla is: it is an experiment created three years ago, a territory of open experimentation in which the blogger becomes the medium between client and reader. The monetization is non existent, but there's a great chance to get visibility if you can write and you think you can offer a new point of view on fashion. Arianna believes it has interesting results, engaging contributors from all over Europe and beyond, and managing to offer contents and points of view that you couldn't find on a regular magazine. [video]

Finally Arianna explained how the Fashion Camp was born. After attending the Mom Camp, she realized that it was a great moment of conversation, and immediately felt the need to replicate the experience in the fashion world, a world that is traditionally closed. It's an attempt at tracing a path, finding new topics on people doing innovating things, and offering a completely free place to those who want to share their ideas. The mission is to start a new mechanism, more meritocratic, in the world of fashion. [video]

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details and insights.

Enjoy!

10minuticon Massimo Santamicone @azael

[video]

Vi invito naturalmente a visionare l'intervista completa, molto ricca di riflessioni e dettagli.

10minuteswith Massimo Santamicone

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Massimo Santamicone, better known online as Azael, a blogger and writer, author of "Sta uscendo il sole e chi l'ha uscendo sei tu."

We asked Massimo how his most recent book was born: first of all he specified it is a collection of texts published on social networks, particularly Twitter and Friendfeed, which he decided to publish on Amazon out of pure curiosity. It is an aphorism collection of the things he wrote during the last year: the title itself is a tweet that Massimo has defined as his most successful tweet, since it has been retweeted about 270 times. [video]

Massimo has also revealed he keeps note of everything he writes on social networks, because the latter have a relative life and offer no warranty as for their stability and continuity in time. He chose to keep a Word archive of everything he publishes, and until now he has produced several collections distributed as free ebooks.

We asked in what way the awareness of writing for the web, and in particular for social networks, has changed the way the text is produced. In his opinion the biggest difference is in the immediate feedback, both positive and negative. When a gag is published on Twitter, the audience reacts right away, giving an instant idea of how much that gag is appreciated. [video]

We wanted to know why in this case Massimo chose Amazon to publish his collection, since during these months there is so much talk about new publishing and the freedom of authors who can finally publish without the filter of traditional editors. Massimo has always published online everything he wrote, on the one side because of his limitless edonism, on the other for the need to preserve the writing: putting it online means to remember it, and keeping track of it. Afterwards he used Lulu.com, and just a few days ago he published with Amazon simply because of a simplicity of publication matter. In 20 minutes the PDF had been converted and was ready to sell.

The numbers are quite interesting: in just four days several hundreds of people have downloaded the collection, bringing it rapidly into the Amazon Top Ten Bestselling Books. [video]

For Massimo the way he writes depends on a crucial factor: responsibility. If he buys a real, paper book, of 200-300 pages, he knows he'll dedicate a few hours of his life to read it. When he buys an ebook that can be downloaded in 30 seconds and read in 5 minutes, the responsibility is quite different. This is why he chooses to write exactly what he would say when talking to a friend. [video]

Finally we asked how he thinks this type of writing will evolve: in his opinion, given the ease of production and the absence of obstacles present in classic publishing, more and more people will adopt this way of writing, which is definitely not so demanding. It is also true that this procedure gives the possibility to put down an important idea and publish it in minutes, the same idea that otherwise would have risked to be forgotten or would have been published with a great delay. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, very rich in insights and details.

10minuticon Arianna Bassoli @karmanet

Buona visione!

10 minutes with Arianna Bassoli

During this interview with Arianna Bassoli, Italian startupper and interaction designer, we've talked about her professional background, the path that led her to the Ministry of Instruction and about her startup, Frestyl.

First of all we asked Arianna how she got to be part of the team of young people constituted by the Minister Profumo: after seeing the notice on Facebook, she discovered that they were looking for a doctorate in the same field she had done hers, so after sending her CV she was contacted for an interview, where she also understood what role she was going to cover. [video]

Arianna studied Communication Sciences in Siena, she graduated in Mass Communication with the intent of starting a carreer in the fields of journalism and television. In time she got more and more interested in new media and the web, and after university she started working in a research center in Dublin, the MediaLab Europe, partner of the MIT MediaLab, working on interaction design. There she started projecting mobile interfaces, which have to do with music. Afterwards she got a doctorate in Management of Information Systems at the London School of Economics[video]

We asked Aranna what will the main points of the digital agenda be, especially during the Monti government. The themes are numerous, and the team is identifying the areas and the projects on which they will be working: what's certain is that they will have an important role in the realization of interfaces, technological projects and international integration. [video]

There has been a lot of talking about startups, social innovation, infrastructures, open data: in Arianna's opinion the Government should exploit the energy of Italian startups and support them with facilitations when it comes to bureaucracy, projects, but most of all creating a long term plan that will allow the creation of new businesses and jobs.

It's a great opportunity to gamble on a growing phenomenon and transform it in growth, both from the social and the economical point of view. The diffusion of broadband, for example, brings points of GDP a year. The digital agenda will include, among its most important points, broadband and the last mile: it is the opportunity to develop access to new technologies, supported by the European Union. [video]

We asked Arianna what the most important goals would be, at least for the next 6 - 12 months. In her opinion there are already a lot of initiatives that should be unlocked, especially those that have to do with e-government, and the communication should be greatly improved. Another important aspect would be contributing to make Italy's reputation better, emphasizing those positive aspects that at the moment aren't adequately publicized. [video]

Many initiatives have rough starts because of bureaucratic problems, and there's also the law changes and the related technical timing to implement those changes to consider. Simplifying processes is fundamental to make opening and making startups and businesses growth easier. Moreover, at the moment there is no government support that is capable of giving correct information and instructions to those who want to go on this path, from a practical point of view. [video]

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details and insights than my brief synthesis.

10minuticon Luca Di Giovanni

[video]

[video]

[video]

In chiusura Luca ci ha raccontato come è arrivato a far parte del cast di The Show Must Go Off e dove sarà possibile vederlo esibirsi dal vivo. [video]

Invito tutti a visionare l'intervista completa, molto ricca di spunti e riflessioni.

Buona visione!

10 minutes with Luca Di Giovanni

During our interview with Luca Di Giovanni, actor well known as the author of the monologue "Last words", the 5 candles monologue of The Show Must Go Off, we talked about theatre, the Italian cultural scenario and the perspectives for those who want to start this carreer.

We asked Luca how he started working as an actor, and his path was truly interesting. He studied at DAMS as a cinema critic, and that was a very fertile place to be. In 2004 he wrote his first short movie, which he then recorded with some friends and presented to his university fellows, many of which studied movie direction. [video]

Apart from the short films he's also done a lot of theatre, starting in Velletri, his city, which is quite rich in interesting realities that are not very well known. After working with some amateur groups, he moved to Rome, where he got in contact with several environments. Unfortunately his theatre activity is reduced to monologues, for practical rather than ideological reasons: this way there's no need to rent rehearsal rooms or pay other actors. Luca has remained isolated on purpose, since "theatre is a place that gives little but teaches a lot." [video]

The candles monologue was aired during the first episode of The Show Must Go Off, and it is a severe analysis of a situation that has just got worse during these last few years. Who starts today doesn't know what direction to take, unlike people who started in other times. The theatre has become a conquest land with nothing to conquer, even though it's quite cheap to do: the true problem is the lack of role models, also made worse by the incontrollable proliferation of low quality schools.

The theatres become "holes without a public", and those who manage them are only interested in making money from rent: the actors have to bring their own public, which is too often made out of friends and family. There are also very talented actors in Italy, though, and The Show Must Go Off is proof that there's still someone who's looking for good actors, even though not famous. [video]

We asked Luca what advice he'd give to young people who would like to be actors, and in his opinion the most important thing is not thinking right away about where you want to get, not looking at other people's results, but just take time to have fun and experiment and know people in the field. It's important not to mistake the goal with the path, which is the main reason his most valuable advice is not to think about "making it". [video]

Finally Luca has told us how he become part of the cast of The Show Must Go Off and where it will be possible to see him perform live. [video]

I invite everyone to view the full interview, extremely rich in details and insights.

Enjoy!
