Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Giuseppe Granieri

We interviewed Giuseppe Granieri, who talked about publishing and new models, content curation and the new paradigms related to the production of content.

First of all we asked Giuseppe where the fracture between users and content producers lies: he believes it is obvious that there is a fracture, since the cultural industry as we know it functioned on the idea that content was scarce and that it was necessary to pay to have it. In exchange you got a service: finding books in the library and disks in the music store, it was possible to have access to the information they selected.

Now, however, the cultural grammatic has changed: the production costs are next to zero, everyone can produce and distribute their own content at ease. The gap is educational, we're not socially educated to navigate the abundence of news, books and content, and we don't know how to take the responsibility of mediation on ourselves, the one that used to be delegated to the selected few. If the world changes rapidly, nobody has the time to codify change, make it understandable and turning it into common cultural patrimony.

Another aspect we saw in our interview was the one of the balance between quality and quantity: Giuseppe believes that what we see happening now doesn't describe how things will be in a year's time. These are transitory situation, since they try to answer to a grammar that we still don't understand the functioning of.

The most reasonable prevision is of a New York independent editor, who pointed out a principle that is easy to grasp: it will be very difficult in the next years to make money by selling content. This is because evidently everyone can produce content, so it becomes complicated to give them a price.

The answer is that content of not excellent quality becomes a pure commodity: in the future, from the point of view of who works on content, the author's work will be rewarded, or a well done curation, the capacity of telling the story of a world by putting together different sources. You can hence have a higher comprehension, and save time. And the reader's time has an economical value.

During this time of great transition, the editors change their role, and one of the possible hypotheses is that they become content curators themselves. The great problem of editors is understanding how to survive today: what do they offer more, how can they guarantee to sell more books than someone who publishes independently? In the States they say that the true enemy isn't piracy, but obscurity: the problem is to make your content more visible in a world in which everybody produces content. And this is the issue editors must learn to solve.

The figure of the curator already has an extremely important role: if you try to reconstruct an event, as a reader, you can spend an afternoon of research and study. If you find someone who has already done the work for you, who has built a good curation, and didn't just give the news but actually built a wide scenario, then you discover that you saved time, which has a great value because it is your scarce resource.

We asked how the curation platforms will evolve: in Giuseppe's opinion, the value of curation isn't in the tool, but in the cognitive capacities, the cultural references and the method of who does it. The platform is just a tool, and for how he sees it, a good curation can be done splendidly in a blog.

Of course, I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details than my brief analysis.

Enjoy!

10minuticon Daniela Farnese @dania

Buona visione!

10minuteswith Daniela Farnese

Last week our guest was Daniela Farnese, with which we talked about her last book, Via Chanel nr. 5, and the modalities chosen to publish and promote it.

First of all we talked about the book itself: the idea behind it was to talk about the story of her generation, so in this case a thirty year old who was unstable both in feelings and work, who from a great love disappointment manages to invent a new life for herself. Daniela has always had a great passion for Chanel, which the protagonist shares, and who inspires herself to Coco both for fashion and life choices.

We asked her why she chose to publish a paper book when digital books seem to be the most obvious choice these days: the editor Newton Compton, which is very much ahead when it comes to digital, has actually done a double distribution, both in libraries and for the ebook version. The electronic version has had such a success, that it came in fifth in the Italian ebook sale chart, a proof that the two approaches - at least in this particular historical moment - don't exclude one another.

Another question regards the building of the text and the influence of her background as a blogger in writing the book. Daniela has revealed that in the novel there are no bloggers, social networks or people constantly on Facebook. The protagonists talk on Skype, but no more, also because she believes that offline and online are so integrated that it is even useless to talk about the distinction.

It would be anachronistical to write the story of a blogger: we're all bloggers now, we all have a Facebook account, and it's given for granted that we also have a smartphone in our pocket, which we use to navigate on the Internet. The only aspect deriving from having spent so many years on the web is how her writing style evolved: dry, synthetic and concise, which answers the speed required by the web.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Matteo Berlucchi

Some time ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Matteo Berlucchi, (now former) CEO of the famous social network dedicated to reading, aNobii.com. From digital publishing to new business models, Matteo explained his vision of how content fruition will evolve.

First of all we asked what the numbers of the selling of paper books are since the digital came in, and in particular whether the numbers still work or we're going towards a digital scenario when it comes to content fruition: the data vary according to the country, based on a series of parametres, but the most important of them is whether or not Amazon is present with Kindle on that particular market. Where you have Amazon with Kindle, explained Matteo, the numbers skyrocket rapidly, because Amazon has a great capacity for marketing, more than most of its competitors.

The appetite for reading digital is definitely there, but there has to be an ecosystem that allows the reader to find a digital books catalogue that is sufficiently rich, the possibility to buy books in a user friendly fashion, and finally having the reading platforms that allow you to read in a pleasant and non intrusive way. [video]

Another question we asked Matteo was about the modifications that aNobii has undergone in time, and the motivations behind them. Matteo distinguishes aNobii in two phases: during the first phase the platform has evolved in apurely crowdsourced fashion. The founder, Greg Sung, has created a website in which the new features were chosen by users; aNobii 2, apart from this aspect that will definitely be maintained and developed, also has the goal of offering a book discovery platform, for those readers who aren't that interested in keeping a digital library. [video]

We asked in what way an author or an editor might take advantage of a platform such as aNobii: the basic idea is that it becomes a literary cafè, a meeting point between editors, writers, painters, contents, reviews, books and libraries. The same way a user can create a library, also an editor or author can do it, putting the contents on display in a whole new way. [video]

Another question we asked Matteo was about the approch editors should have towards digital: he believes publishing should stay very simply as an intermediary between writer and reader. The editors should think this way, not see themselves as copyright hunters, that they can juice in order to get more revenue. [video]

We asked Matteo whether he sees reading on ebooks as more suitable for leisure reads or study reads: he believes it's perfect for both, and surely fantastic for study. You avoid carrying heavy books around, and spending a lot of money on paper that at the end of classes ends up to get macerated. [video]

Matteo has explained what the evolutions of the ebook world will be, considering aNobii's strategy, and has told us that it will be possible to buy books through the aNobii platform: they won't create a tore, there will be no aNobii book store, nor a top 10 best selling list, nor special offers, but there will be links to the stores where you can buy them.

The aNobii business model is based on selling ebooks, also because Matteo doesn't believe it is possible to implement a Spotify model in this case, with monthly fees. The economical model around ebooks is very complicated and doesn't mix well with renting or monthly subscriptions. [video]

Finally we asked whether there are perspectives for initiatives of reading promotion, exploiting the giant online community of the aNobii platform: Matteo believes it would be a great idea, but difficult to put together by the team, which is really small. What it is possible to do is giving the possibility to people who are interested in organizing these types of initiatives on the platform, and promoting them in the most adequate way.

The important thing isn't that people buy books from aNobii, but that they buy books from as many places as possible: if everyone buys their books in one place, a monopoly is created that isn't good for anyone. In England, for example, the incredible popularity of Amazon is also making numerous bookshops close the doors.

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis!

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Arsenio Bravuomo

Some time ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Arsenio Bravuomo, writer and poet who was written several poetry and short story books.

First of all we asked Arsenio how his book "Piccolo bastardo racconta" was born. It is a series of short stories, told with the voice of a nine year old boy. Arsenio has also added, at the end of the book, a fragment of the beginning of  a novel he wrote when he was 12. As for poetry, all of his writings are available on Lulu.com, in a 800 pages volume. [video]

We asked what a poetry slam is: it's a contest among poets, about 8 for each night, who challenge each other on stage, reading poetry. There's a jury who gives the votes and an MC who moderates activities. There are often musicians, in order to make the night "less boring". The best ones go forward, and at the end of the night a winner is proclaimed. [video]

From this mechanism the project "Poets in lists", a poetry slam tourney organized by Arsenio together with Guido Catalano and Alessandra Racca, other two poets from Turin. Together they had done many poetry slams, some good and some bad, especially from an organizing point of view. For this reason they wanted to create a well designed event, funny and spectacular, calling very good poets to participate. 80 people had proposed to enter, for the 32 available spots, and the event itself has been a great success. [video]

So great that they continued with "Stories in lists", another event that worked with the same participating and voting mechanisms as the poetry slam, but instead of having competing poets, they had competing storytellers. 5 minutes each, without reading: a very interesting experience, that has brought Arsenio to conclude that it is much more difficult to find good storytellers than it is to find good poets. [video]

Another question we asked was about the situation of Italian publishing at the moment: in the US newspapers and books are already considered dead, and Arsenio thinks it is only a matter of time until Italy comes to the same conclusion. It is inevitable, in his opinion, that the book will become a niche product. The paper version will remain a collectable item for those who really enjoy the experience, while the large scale fruition will happen in a digital environment. [video]

He also made the example of an American writer who wrote about 40 novels and has never been able to publish any of them through regular editors. She finally managed to publish them thanks to Amazon: once you eliminate the filter, the public will decide on the quality of the produced content.

Another aspect we discussed was the price of ebooks. Arsenio thinks it's not right to charge the same price for ebooks and paper books, because the perception of value is very different. The physical book is an objects that exists per se, and to produce it you must spend money on the printing, the binding, the transportation; an ebook, on the other side, is a file on a HD, and the production costs are the same for one copy or a thousand. [video]

In conclusion, Arsenio says that editors won't disappear, but that they will have to change the type of job they do, to become a true service to authors. Writing a book might be a solitary activity, but for publishing you need a lot of technicalities and bureaucracy, which might be what editors could do. The more stuff there is to read, in Arsenio's opinion, the better: the more people write, the better the country.

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer in content than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

[video]

Vi invito dunque a visionare l’intervista integrale, decisamente ricca di spunti e riflessioni.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Luca Conti #ijf12

The second guest of the Intervistato Journalism Festival series is Luca Conti, journalist and new media expert, with whom we've talked about ebooks, ebook readers and the state of the art in digital publishing.

First of all, considering the recent evolution of the scenario, we asked Luca which are the main protagonists in the world of ebook tools. Without a doubt the first player is the Amazon Kindle, the most widespread ebook reader, even though it can only be bought online. The advantages represented by the possibility of reading books on a device that is entirely similar to paper in terms of reading experience are, in Luca's opinion, one of the main strengths of the Kindle, which is still considered a better tool than the iPad or other tablets when it comes to reading. [video]

As for the right price for an ebook, Luca thinks that the maximum should be about 10 euro, a price that Italian editors are adopting as well, even though the best price would be between 5 and 7 euro. [video]

Best on paper or digital? Luca doesn't see the ebook as a substitution, but rather as a complement for paper books, just as online news aren't a complete substitution, but an integration of what is published on paper newspapers. [video]

The possibility of having a tool that will integrate ebooks and rss feeds and news shouldn't be taken for granted. A lot will depend on the technological evolution and its capability of creating a hybrid that bears the advantages of electronic ink and the ones of lcd screens, with color, luminosity and fast refresh, even though at the moment we are very far from that goal. [video]

Cheap, light, compatible with a large variety of formats: these are, in Luca's opinion, the characteristics of the ideal ebook reader. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer in details and insights!

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Alessandro Bonino

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Alessandro Bonino, founder of Spinoza.it and of the blog "E io che mi pensavo", which has been awarded the Best Literary Blog Prize at the Macchianera Blog Awards 2011.

Alessandro has told us about the origins of Spinoza, born in 2005 as a place in which to treat actuality topics and look at contemporary events in an oblique fashion.
The satirical turn imposed by Stefano Andreoli has had great success, bringing users to leave comments that were actually gags, which were subsequently directed to the Permanent Satire Laboratory Forum.
Spinoza has also become a physical book, actually two books: a white one and a black one, a tribute to the Beatles' White Album and Prince's and Metallica's Black Album.
In Alessandro's opinion, the two Spinoza books could be compared to a "history almanac" of our country, a "postmodern memory exercise" that goes over the political facts occurred between 2008 and 2011. [video]

As for new publishing, Alessandro has described the situation of the Italian market, characterized by two ways of selling the ebook in the ePub format.
The first one, adopted by big editors, is to protect the ebook making it impossible to read it on devices that aren't authorized by the seller; the second, adopted for example by Alessandro's publishing house, Sugaman, is to keep the ebook free and open, just adding to it the name of the buyer and the date in which the book was purchased. [video]

Sugaman was born from the collaboration with the writer Paolo Nori, especially from their discussion about the way Italian publishing houses were facing ebooks: very often ebooks have a price that is equal or superior to the price of the physical book.
Along with the protection politics, there are the price politics. It seems like the publishing houses only want to have this kind of product available in their catalogues, but they actually lack the will to sell it. [video]

But when Amazon will arrive in Italy with its ebook ecosystem, offering the Kindle at a fair price and starting to stipulate contracts directly with authors, the Italian publishing houses will really risk to be cut out.
Talking about ebooks, Alessandro has specified some of the most desirable characteristics of an ebook reader, and the most important seems to be a display that is easily readable in any light condition. [video]

We asked Alessandro how the book of the future will be: in his opinion the content that can only exist in a book will find its purely textual dimension, while everything that until now was a book only because it didn't have any other possibility, will find new and surprizing means to express itself. [video]

I invite everyone to watch the full interview, much richer in information, details and insight than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | David Orban 2/2

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing David Orban, startupper and visionary currently CEO of dotsub.com.

In this second part of the interview we talked about free and open knowledge with the example of the publication of the 1918 flu genoma online. In David's opinion freedom is a complicated and delicate process. There are people who are not fully equipped and people who are better equipped to understand what the consequences of the misuse of certain information can be, even though we must never stop asking ourselves in what limits it is right that the second group decides for the first, in a democratic system. [video]

David has also talked about the Internet of things, which is totally dependent on pre-existing conditions: a widespread, fast and reliable network, reliable and cheap energy sources and applications. Just as the personal computer found its killer app in the word processor and the electronic spreadsheet, the Internet of things must find its killer app to finally explode. [video]

Talking about publishing, David has pointed out that the transformation of the storage of knowledge on paper into a more dynamically accessible electronic form will accelerate enormously in the next few years. The book, released from the limitations and constraints that are embedded in the publishing process, will now be able to take new forms.
Amazon.com is already selling 10 page ebooks at a very low price, which wouldn't be possible with traditional books for purely economical reasons. [video]

In his opinion imposing a maximum possible discount is an arbitrary restriction to trade and free initiative and it has no reason to exist.
Different taxation for physical books and ebooks is already an obstacle: in many countries, Italy included, physical books have a very small or zero VAT, while ebooks are equated to software and are taxed with 20% VAT (21% in conformity with the recent financial maneuver). [video]

I asked David what we should expect from the next 10 years, in what way technology will make our lives better.
David has structured his answer in three big parts: the production of clean energy in a distributed manner, with solar pannels that are getting more and more efficient; transportation, which will radically change the way we think of cars today; experiences and experiments in everybody's lives, such as travelling and participating in other communities will become very common and it will not represent losing your roots. [video]

Of course David has answered your questions, so I invite everyone to watch the full interview, surely richer and more informative than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!
