Are droids taking our jobs?»

Possible futures: the rise of the machines and the new world

In June 2012, Andrew McAfee, a researcher with several degrees who has also been a professor at the prestigious Harvard Business School, goes on the stage of the TEDx Boston to talk about the results of his latest research. The title he chooses for his speech is as short as it is allarming: «Are droids taking our jobs?»

During the 14 minutes of his speech, McAfee focalizes the attention of the audience on the economical recovery following the recession of the last five years: the main economical indicators in the US show some sort of growth. The only data that remains low is employment.

According to McAfee, the new developments of automation and software are partially responsible for this situation. The professor makes the example of translation: during the centuries before ours, the passage of a text from one language to another required the involvement of an individual. Today translation programs are available online, often for free and for any kind of device.

The impact is enormous not only in the creative or the digital field, but also in reality. The autonomous Google car - which is now in a phase of advanced testing - will have effects on milions of drivers who crowd American streets. Just as humanoid robots, whose development is accelerated by the enormous investments of DARPA.

The professor closes sustaining that we will be on the verge of overcoming the limitations of our brains, defining an utopian scenario in which humanity will have more time to dedicate itself to great challenges - such as reducing poverty and pollution - leaving to machines the task to provide for our own survival.

However, not everyone share McAfee's positivist approach. Paul Krugman, economy Nobel prize, launches an interesting reflection from the pages of the New York Times. He sustains that the impact of the digital era will be witnessed by the arrival of intelligent machines. They will soon be ready to do operations that used to require a great quantity of human manpower. This means an exponential increase of productivity and growth.

For what price, though? And most of all, who will benefit from this growth? According to the economist it is easy to suppose that many will be left behind. The bar of necessary preparation to compete with machines will become higher and higher, just as the times of formation of individuals who - unlike their artificial counterparts - require years of study and maturation before they can be ready to face the challenges of society and of the market.

It is not the first time in history that man interrogates himself on the outcomes of the exponential advance of technologies. Around the middle of the XIX century in England, a protest movement against the new textile machines developed, because they were considered responsible for the lowering of wages and the increasing unemployment. The phenomenon, called luddism, owes its name to Ned Ludd, a textile worker elevated to a symbol when in 1779 he destroyed a loom.

Gustavo Piga, ordinary professor of Political Economy at Roma Tor Vergata, in a recent post on his blog has analyzed a paper by Jeffrey D. Sachs and Laurence J. Kotlikoff, intitulated "Machines and Long-Term Misery". Piga concludes describing a troubling scenario and some countermeasures to do in order to avoid that the situation gets any worse. The challenge of the current and future generations is all here; we can expect it will not be easy, but the choice remains, as always, in our hands:

«The XXI century of robots could reveal itself as the century in which young people will burn robot factories as luddist did with looms, they will burn the society fabric, retiring their citizenship from a world that enslaves them. It is not an attractive prospective. Or it could be the century in which we will learn how to rapidly instruct our young people, redistributing to them part of the machine surplus. But in order to do this we need: a) young and visionary leaders that can manage with easy masses of exasperated young people and b) the support of a large part of the rich, older class, capable of riding the wave of change to avoid being striken by a tsunami of proportions unknown until today, and that can give up part of its economical prerogatives, obtained with a progress that cannot be credited exclusively to their merits, but rather to fortune and the cases of history, which have made it so happen that centuries of ideas accumulated in time produced a great abundence fallen casually in their hands.»

The Toxic Twitter: l'ecologia della comunicazione (seconda parte)

The Toxic Twitter: ecology of communication (second part)

We create the world we perceive, not because there is no reality outside our mind, but because we choose and modify the reality we see in order to make it coherent with our convictions about the world we live in. It's a necessary function to our survival and adaptation.
Gregory Bateson

Let's continue. We continue and don't finish, because digital is a way too vast argument and maybe we're using the wrong terms to talk about it, because the web is in continous expansion and social networks are only temporary forms that we use now, but that after a while will be abandoned in favor of other practices and experiences. We need a new ecology of the mind, since we are submersed in an experience that is so totalizing that we don't know what the long term consequences will be.

It is a change of environment at all levels, and so deep, considering the exponential increase of process speed, that it doesn't have precedents nor with the invention of print, nor with the industrial revolution, nor with the television era. And yet we continue to use our schemes to analyze this paradigm, we keep trying to adapt the change to ourselves, as we continue to be modified by it. This is a point that needs to be clear: the production of speeches as an intellectual and social product is living a mutation. We'd need another Bateson and another Foucault, especially because it is the "structure" that is in crisis.

Bieber has cancer! it's not true, but how many believed it? How many have shaved their heads in sign of solidarity? How many have published a Facebook status, apparently written by some lawyers, believing that it would stop authorities from monitoring their activities on social media? We seem to have gone back to the television time, when we believed it as an oracle, only that here everything is "augmented", and exponentially. If it wasn't enough to turn off the TV, the web is even worse. We're constantly connected, continuously electrified and most of all we look for things that have similarities, we don't look for something new. This is not repression, this is the government, its authoritarism, the loisir, the suggestion, and Huxley's New World has won over Orwell's Big Brother.

The control isn't on what you do but on what you buy, on your emotions sphere, and charging the member of the community with stress. All of this "pollutes" our perceptive processes, it modifies them, even though we're not aware of it, but it would be enough to think about how today we write a post, a blogger almost automatically thinks about what to write in order to indicize it at its best, and if we talk about Twitter, we start thinking in 140 characters, and for Instagram we know that autosnap is useless because taking a picture of yourself is a style, better yet if the latest smartphone is visible in the shot.

We need a new ecology of communication in order to understand the medium, but especially that is capable of understanding how to communicate and what languages to use in this new environment, which isn't even a medium, but a strongly pervasive synesthesy. The web is an iceberg, at the moment we're on its top and we need to go down in order to understand what lays underneath. My doubt is that there's no will to do it. Why? Because underneath it's cold and there are no colorful lights.

[video]

Vi invito dunque a visionare l’intervista integrale, decisamente ricca di spunti e riflessioni.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Luca Conti #ijf12

The second guest of the Intervistato Journalism Festival series is Luca Conti, journalist and new media expert, with whom we've talked about ebooks, ebook readers and the state of the art in digital publishing.

First of all, considering the recent evolution of the scenario, we asked Luca which are the main protagonists in the world of ebook tools. Without a doubt the first player is the Amazon Kindle, the most widespread ebook reader, even though it can only be bought online. The advantages represented by the possibility of reading books on a device that is entirely similar to paper in terms of reading experience are, in Luca's opinion, one of the main strengths of the Kindle, which is still considered a better tool than the iPad or other tablets when it comes to reading. [video]

As for the right price for an ebook, Luca thinks that the maximum should be about 10 euro, a price that Italian editors are adopting as well, even though the best price would be between 5 and 7 euro. [video]

Best on paper or digital? Luca doesn't see the ebook as a substitution, but rather as a complement for paper books, just as online news aren't a complete substitution, but an integration of what is published on paper newspapers. [video]

The possibility of having a tool that will integrate ebooks and rss feeds and news shouldn't be taken for granted. A lot will depend on the technological evolution and its capability of creating a hybrid that bears the advantages of electronic ink and the ones of lcd screens, with color, luminosity and fast refresh, even though at the moment we are very far from that goal. [video]

Cheap, light, compatible with a large variety of formats: these are, in Luca's opinion, the characteristics of the ideal ebook reader. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer in details and insights!

Enjoy!

Prossimamente: Giovanni Scrofani @jovanz74

Coming up soon: Giovanni Scrofani

Tomorrow we'll have the pleasure of interviewing Giovanni Scrofani, corporate lawyer and founder of the Gilda35 project.

Born in 1974, he develops a contradictory passion for digital and humanistic culture, which he will deal with his entire life.

One of his first memories as a child are linked to Pong games, one of the first game consoles in b/w in the 70s. He'll live the entire cursus honorum of a generation that migrated from analogic to digital in every aspect of daily life: Pong, ZX Spectrum, PC IBM, 386, 486, Pentium I, Pentium II, Pentium III, Playstation ONE, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Netbook, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Kindle.

His youth was spent learning the basics of programming in Basic, C, Visualbasic, Pascal, and attending brilliantly a classic highschool (the famous Giulio Cesare in Rome) in an experimental informatics section.

He spent the 90s reading tons of philosophy, history, Greek and Latin literature books, religious texts of the most different traditions, collecting a huge library of Sci-Fi, fantasy and fantastic classics while developing a great admiration for the cyberpunk scene and Philip K. Dick, accumulating tons of comic books of every genre and style and practising the art of cartooning at an amateur level. He traveled across the world with any kind of transportation mean, visiting Europe, North America and The Middle East. He roleplays with hyperbolic quantities of rules, he has fun testing new game systems for importers and he has such a passion for videogames that he becomes a betatester for several famous titles.

These have been very particular years. In 1995 Internet arrives in Italy. Giovanni starts to participate in the first online communities, developing a vast knowledge about the topics regarding hacking, hacktivism and digital culture. He lives the web 1.0 season passionately, seeing it as a moment of fundamental aknowledgement on social, antropological and political themes.

In 2010 he started the Gilda35 Project, the online community of "Researchers", who, through dadaist performances, digital challenges, 2.0 inquiries, tries to make people think upon the vices and virtues of today's digital culture, with a bit of satire.

He has collaborated with Brand Care Magazine and Fanpage, writing articles and didactic texts on topics linked to law and new technologies and netnography.

He is an active member of the Indigeni Digitali Association, which "promotes the debate on innovative, creative and evolutionary aspects of Italian Society, with particular regard to the systems of communication, technology, management, production of goods and service in the public and private sector with the goal of finding solutions that can also contribute to the development of Italy" (art. 2 of the Statute).

Of course, if you want to propose a question, simply fill in the form above!

Prossimamente: Alessandro Bonino @eio

"The digital based person is the one that lives digital in every aspect: he creates new applications, tests and masters new technologies, searches for new technical solutions, participates actively in the online conversation, experiments and applies new tools, helps whoever shows interest for technology and shares his know how, capacities and network with other digital based people".

Together with Lorenzo Sfienti he has recently launched Followgram, a web app developed as a way to extend those Instagram's basic functions so appealing to millions of users already.
Followgram creates an Instagram's follow button to be embedded on websites, blogs and so on and provides its users with a vanity URL, his/her photo gallery, friends, followers & following lists.

Fabio is also the founder of YepLike, Risquare, Baby 2.0 and Iquii.

We'll have the chance to talk about digital culture, startups, the Indigeni Digitali network, just to name a few topics.

Of course, if  you want to propose a question, simply fill in the form above!
