Remembering your roots
Europe in the 16th century through the 17th century was in constant turmoil. The once dominant Catholic Church was being attacked by Calvinists, Protestants, Lutherans, and those groups were also fighting amongst themselves.
The reign of Queen Elizabeth brought some peace, especially after England trounced the Spanish Armada, but the peace did not last long. In Italy, the powerful Medici family ran in and out of favor, which created waves and ripples throughout the country and even throughout the world. As if that wasn’t enough, the 30 Years War started during this time period too. And did I mention that Germany and Bohemia were in religious and political turmoil?
If you were living through this time period and then heard that there was a whole part of the world that was virtually free of people, would you not think about getting away? In fact, many people not only contemplated leaving, they actually did, even though they had to travel by boat across waters that very few people had crossed, and even though they weren’t sure of exactly what they would find on the other side. In the US, we call these people the pilgrims.
There’s a funny fact about the pilgrims. Even though they left Europe because of religious persecution, when they happened upon Native Americans who had been on the land for centuries already, the immediate reaction was, “Ew.” As comedian Eddie Izzard says in one of his routines, “The pilgrims looked at how the Native Americans were dressed and said, ‘Uh, what’s all of this, please?’” The ways of the Native Americans were different, their way of living was unfamiliar, and they looked different. The pilgrims who were searching for religious freedom rather quickly turned into the exact kinds of people they had run away from. They forgot their roots.
You run into this same kind of pattern in the online world. I have seen people who started at just about the same time as me present themselves as if they had achieved success solely because of their own effort. Granted, you have to work to find success in anything, but in social media, “the people” play a major role in determining whether you will see your star rise. If no one reads your blog posts, it doesn’t matter how many you write. If no one shares your tweets or replies to you, you might as well tweet all day to a wall.
Even more disturbing, people sometimes seem to forget what it was like to be new to the online world. They treat newer people the way they once were treated, but they somehow forget that part of their journey. They forget the frustration, the learning curve, the desire to give up, and all of the other things that are part of your experience when you are just beginning your social media adventure.
Never forget your journey. Never forget what it was like to be on the lowest rung of the ladder, even if you make it to the highest rung. This lesson holds true for life as much as it holds true for social media. Don’t you agree?

Marjorie Clayman | @margieclayman
You never know what might change the world
One of my favorite things about history is how many “what if” scenarios you come upon. What if someone had taken the Titanic’s warnings more seriously? What if Hitler had died in the first World War? What if Queen Elizabeth had been assassinated before taking the throne? What if Henry VIII’s son had lived long enough to become a powerful king? What if the Romans had gotten along better with the Visigoths? What if Europeans hadn’t discovered the joys of sugar and tobacco?
History consists of small decisions making a huge difference. It consists of two people meeting and creating an idea completely by chance. Who could have known that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson would pull together with John Adams and Benjamin Franklin? Who would have guessed that the great trade route between Europe and China that made cities like Florence wealthy beyond belief would also bring the plague?
History is full of accidents, amazing coincidences, “almost” moments, near misses, and explosive hits that change everything. But we only know about those things in retrospect. We only can look at and see the big picture as we look back and piece everything together. Nobody notices those tiny moments when they first happen. No one goes to meet a person understanding that the world will change (eventually) because of it. We always go through life blind, us humans. It’s always a surprise to us when our actions and words impact others.
Do we have to be blind though? Social Media gives us an opportunity to connect with people, many people, purposefully. We can learn a lot about them by watching how they interact with others, watching what they say, and maybe even watching how they present themselves offline. We can run ideas by these people with the intent of starting something we hope will be big. We can find groups of people who are already doing things we admire and we can ask to join them.
Social Media gives us a chance to purposefully change the world. We can take those “almost” meetings and make them happen. We can take a random connection and nurture it into something more. Even more simple, we can make a huge difference in someone’s life on a daily basis. If you see someone is sad, take a second to cheer them up. If you see someone is being bullied, try to intercede. These things may not alter the entire history of the planet, but they can definitely make a difference. Why not risk it, then? Why not spend the few seconds it takes to reach out, say hello, offer a smile, or suggest an idea? What have you got to lose?
When we study history we begin to appreciate how hard all of this was back in the day. There was no free way to communicate with people from all around the world. You were lucky if everyone in your village or city knew what you had to say. These are unprecedented times. Why not try to do something unprecedented? Don’t ride on the waves of history like a bit of driftwood. You can start forming your world now. What’s stopping you?

David Rossi and MPS, the same shadows 20 years later
I couldn't believe my eyes: there were policemen, carabinieri and men of the Finance Guard everywhere, blocking the access to the area, surrounded by an undefined number of police vehicles. A true and proper military action.
An absurde scene, a force display that I had only seen in the final scene of the movie The Blues Brothers. For me and my colleagues that was an unforgettable morning: all the accountability offices had been sealed, and the coincidence wanted that I worked exactly there at the time.
It was exactly 20 years ago, on the 9th of March, in the fifth ENI palace in San Donato Milanese; it was the beginning of an inquiry on what will be remembered in history books as the "mother of all bribes" of Tangentopoli and that led to the political earthquake that we all know very well. And I was there, in the middle of it.
The ENI president at that time, Gabriele Cagliari, was brought in jail that morning, and got out a few months later only to be brought to the cementery because of a suicide on which way too many shadows have remained.
On the 9th of March 2013 the funerals of David Rossi have been celebrated; a curious coincidence, but not tha only one in these two parallel stories with many similarities and many unresolved questions. This time there's a securty camera that shows the ex responsible of MPS communication while he falls from the third floor of Rocca Salimbeni, at the end of a long and misterious phone call received during the late afternoon.
The most probable hypothesis is suicide instigation and strong pressures during his last days of life. The detectives found a perfectly ordered desk on which ordered documents and a music cd are found, coherent with the image of a rigorous, reflexive and analytical person that accompanied David Rossi. Now they will look through his SMS and calls on his four or maybe five mobile phiones (and also the one he used for his last phone call), and also his files and emails (the deleted ones as well) saved on his computers and USB drives.
Now let's come to the obscure sides of the story, starting with the video of a jump in Fosbury style, a definitely unusual dynamic.
Before this, David Rossi has lunch with his wife and brother, and in the late afternoon tells them he's coming home: a quite unusual behavior for someone who is about to commit suicide. Other people have confirmed that during the morning Rossi didn't seem worried at all. Then the famous phone call comes, and lasts about one hour, while the calls from his wife and brother remain without an answer.
No words to his dear ones: something that has amazed the brother of the victim: "he preferred to just go away like that, without even saying goodbye, and that's something that makes me really upset."
The three goodbye notes found in his office seem written for his wife: they have been thrown away before managing to express anything of a certain meaning. We should ask ourselves why a manager with several computers and 4 mobile phones, or maybe 5, during his last hours of life makes long phone calls, sends messages, but for the most important words of his life chooses the transcription on paper. And throws them away.
His daughter Carolina is sent home because the father is still in his office, even though a few hours earlier he had said he was coming home. On the other hand, it seems that Rossi lived only 500m away from his office, about 7 minutes on foot. When she arrives it's too late, because for her father, who fell at around 20.15, there's nothing left to do. For her and for his brother, it seems that David Rossi didn't leave any words: this as well is quite unusual.
The editorial choice of showing images of a person left unconscious on the ground can offer added value to the news, beyond feeding the morbid curiosity of part of the readers? Must it take into account the risk that the sources might be taking? Must they inform the author of the pictures about what he or she is risking, even if convinced that it is sufficient to not publish the name?
Is it legitimate to think that, beyond the photos that were published, there were others that clearly identify the responsibles and that were given to the police? And what if the criminals were not as capable as I was in identifying the casual photographer, maybe accusing his neighbor? Judging from what is in the article, the newspaper wanted to maintain its sources anonymous, but evidently it has committed a big mistake.
There are many comments I've been reading online on behalf of perplexed people on the causes of David Rossi's death, who have asked similar questions: maybe because in the past lethal coffees and dark monks bridges have inspired conspiracy theories, maybe because of the singular omonimy with the protagonist of Criminal Minds, but it's one of those situations where the rational elaboration of facts is inevitably fighting the gut sensations.
For now I'll just close here, with that strange sensation that, yet again, it's not going to be pretty.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Antonio Pavolini
A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Antonio Pavolini, currently Senior Analyst in the Media Industry - Innovation & Industry Relations division in Telecom Italia.
As for the use of social media inside companies, at the moment the situation is distorted by the fact that it is really easy to sell services relative to the use of social media that are perfectly useless, with modalities that bring to misunderstandings because of the scarce knowledge of the tool and of company communication. [video]
When we talk about the transition of mass communication media towards social media, it is possible to distinguish two different dynamics: on the one side, people who defend the old way of communicating because they have economic interests in it, and on the other side, people who experiment and try out new tools.
Tecnologically a convergence of traditional tv and content available on the Internet is already possible, even without buying a set-top box, but simply connecting a computer to the HDMI port of the television. But those who have the technical knowledge necessary to do this represent a very small part of the market that doesn't influence in any way what is the current media ecosystem, which will remain unchanged until connected TVs, digital terrestrial TV and game consoles won't really be intuitive and competitive in the granting easy access compared to traditional TV. [video]
Content neutrality is another controversial theme because connected TV producers make contracts with editors and majors, limiting the acess to the extraordinary richness and diversity of content that is freely available on the Internet.
Until this transition phase, during which everybody wants to make some money without having a true business model in their mind - which only results from a radical change in the ecosystem- won't be over, the industry world won't have the necessary motivation to bring forward this change. [video]
Antonio has also expressed his opinion about the chance of having a StumbleUpon for TV in the future, the creation of an amazing personalized scheduled program that users are happy to undergo, that is tied to an extremely deep knowledge of the user, his tastes and interests.
It's a matter of humanistic sensitivity, the research of sociability, affinity and complicity that are truly those elusive things that social media are giving us and that the television, by educately aggregatin people in front of a television set, for years has denied us. [video]
We also talked about broadcasting programming, 140NewsNetwork, freedom of information and possible future scenarios regarding the new tools.
Of course Antonio has answered your questions, so I invite everyone to watch the full interview, surely richer in information than my brief synthesis.
Enjoy!

I #socialmedia amplificano l'incertezza linguistica?

Social media amplify linguistic insecurity?
The concept of linguistic insecurity was introduced and explored by American linguist William Lebov in his 1966 book The Social Stratification of English, noting that speakers of any language experience feelings of negative self-image when comparing their own patterns of speech to what is perceived as the “correct” form of the spoken language. Speakers experiencing linguistic insecurity alter normal speech as a result of their attempt to compensate for perceived deficiencies in their own speech variety.
Linguistic insecurity takes on a wholly different form when speech shifts online, where fluency in a language can also be extended to the rules of discourse and adopted “slang” across social networks. In other words, competency in appropriate use of various social networking sites becomes a language identifier; participants are consciously and unconsciously evaluated and scored by other participants based on how fluently they express the tropes and cultural mores of the community.
This is a slight departure from the typical understanding of what constitutes both language insecurity and fluency; the written word and real-time communication on the social web changes rapidly as communities experience the influx of new participants. The character of communities online are never fixed or stratified; they are fluid and dynamic systems.
Reddit is perhaps the best example of a meta-community that has adopted its own discrete language identifiers - and Redditors often react swiftly and negatively when the code of behavior and appropriate use are perceived as being crossed in some way. The framework of Reddit allows for numerous sub-cultures to find a home and flourish through user-generated content. Communities are self-selecting and self-aggrandizing. They organize around a central principle or rule that connects individuals with one another. These central principles can be an interest, hobby or political ideology - lots of possibilities here.
In his 1962 book The Five Clocks, German linguist Martin Joos introduced a model that describes the five registers (a variety of language chosen by the speaker relative to context or social setting) of English:
- Frozen: Printed unchanging language that often contains archaisms. Think, for example, of the Pledge of Allegiance which is oft recited in a ritualistic monotone. The precise language is fixed and imprinted in memory.
- Formal: Technical vocabulary or exact definitions are important; the language of business, client meetings, employee reviews. Communicates needs and expectations within a specific frame of reference.
- Consultative: Conversation between an informed source and the recipient of that knowledge. The consultative register shares much of the same referential space as the formal. The consultative is chiefly concerned with the dissemination of information from source to recipient. Language can be technical and exact but often carries supporting definitions and
- Casual: Common among friends in a social setting. Slang is commonplace, as is a truncated vocabulary.
- Intimate: Most common among family members and close friends, this register can also include non-verbal communication and private language i.e. the inside joke.
Relationships are tricky, complicated things. The way in which we communicate tells us a lot about ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we shape our own spheres of influence against the larger context of worldview. We’ve only begun to scratch the surface of how social networks online are disrupting conventional modes of communication and media.

The Toxic Twitter: l'ecologia della comunicazione (seconda parte)
Simone Corami | @psymonic
The Toxic Twitter: ecology of communication (second part)
We create the world we perceive, not because there is no reality outside our mind, but because we choose and modify the reality we see in order to make it coherent with our convictions about the world we live in. It's a necessary function to our survival and adaptation.
Gregory Bateson
Let's continue. We continue and don't finish, because digital is a way too vast argument and maybe we're using the wrong terms to talk about it, because the web is in continous expansion and social networks are only temporary forms that we use now, but that after a while will be abandoned in favor of other practices and experiences. We need a new ecology of the mind, since we are submersed in an experience that is so totalizing that we don't know what the long term consequences will be.
It is a change of environment at all levels, and so deep, considering the exponential increase of process speed, that it doesn't have precedents nor with the invention of print, nor with the industrial revolution, nor with the television era. And yet we continue to use our schemes to analyze this paradigm, we keep trying to adapt the change to ourselves, as we continue to be modified by it. This is a point that needs to be clear: the production of speeches as an intellectual and social product is living a mutation. We'd need another Bateson and another Foucault, especially because it is the "structure" that is in crisis.
Bieber has cancer! it's not true, but how many believed it? How many have shaved their heads in sign of solidarity? How many have published a Facebook status, apparently written by some lawyers, believing that it would stop authorities from monitoring their activities on social media? We seem to have gone back to the television time, when we believed it as an oracle, only that here everything is "augmented", and exponentially. If it wasn't enough to turn off the TV, the web is even worse. We're constantly connected, continuously electrified and most of all we look for things that have similarities, we don't look for something new. This is not repression, this is the government, its authoritarism, the loisir, the suggestion, and Huxley's New World has won over Orwell's Big Brother.
The control isn't on what you do but on what you buy, on your emotions sphere, and charging the member of the community with stress. All of this "pollutes" our perceptive processes, it modifies them, even though we're not aware of it, but it would be enough to think about how today we write a post, a blogger almost automatically thinks about what to write in order to indicize it at its best, and if we talk about Twitter, we start thinking in 140 characters, and for Instagram we know that autosnap is useless because taking a picture of yourself is a style, better yet if the latest smartphone is visible in the shot.
We need a new ecology of communication in order to understand the medium, but especially that is capable of understanding how to communicate and what languages to use in this new environment, which isn't even a medium, but a strongly pervasive synesthesy. The web is an iceberg, at the moment we're on its top and we need to go down in order to understand what lays underneath. My doubt is that there's no will to do it. Why? Because underneath it's cold and there are no colorful lights.

10minuticon Alessio Giannone @pinucciotwit
Buona visione!

10minuteswith Alessio Giannone
Yesterday we had the great pleasure of interviewing Alessio Giannone, creator of Pinuccio, the satyrical dissacrator of politicians online.
First of all we asked Alessio how it all started, and he revelead that it all began on YouTube last October, when he called Berlusconi on his birthday. Afterwards the Facebook fanpage was opened, and the Twitter channel activated. Pinuccio's language was reproposed on all mediums, but he never really gets an answer to his provocations, which says a lot on how Italian politics manages communication: one direction, no replies. [video]
He believes that the best solution would be for each politician to personally manage his or her online presence, but the truth is that the cultural view of the Italian politician is really far away from the people. Twitter has emphasized that clearly, because they think they can do talk shows on there, not realizing that nobody's actually listening to them anymore. [video]
We asked what satire is for him: he believes it is what it has always been, the pranking of power. The mission of satire is social, putting in light the mistakes of that particular moment, and in what ways the political power is doing it wrong. Moreover, satire should be at 360°, and not have any kind of political color, but unfortunately in Italy - especially in TV - satire always has a color, and you notice it right away when a commedian attacks someone more violently than others. [video]
The shift from paper to the Internet has given the possibility to change the generation of those who actually do satire, because in order to publish on certain newspapers you had to have certain friends and certain recommendations. The web allows everyone to be completely free, and this is the reason why it scares traditional media so much. [video]
Traditional journalism is dead, because it has always been for sale to politics: there's the right wing newspaper, the left wing newspaper, the businessmen newspaper, but the dynamics of online are completely different. The users dedicate just a few minutes of attention to every single stimulus, so the goal is to make people laugh and give them the news at the same time. [video]
The way Italian politicians approach social media is a complete failure: it's not just about quantity, like how many followers you have, or how many mentions and retweets. It's most and foremost a quality issue, when it comes down to analyzing the sentiment of those answers. Alessio estimates that 80% of the answers politicians receive online are actually negative ones, but unfortunately there are only a few analysts who will not blow smoke and will take these factors into consideration as well. [video]
In October November, however, the elections campaign will start, and Pinuccio will participate as well with some dedicated formats. It is difficult to foresse whether the quality of the presence on social networks of single politicians will have any kind of influence on the result of the elections. Unfortunately estimating the difference from the real deal just by what happens online is complicated, and Italy is a "people of clientele", too tied up to the physical contact with the politician to actually be influenced by what happens on social networks. [video]
I invite you to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis.
Enjoy!

Prossimamente: Giuseppe Granieri @gg

Coming up soon: Giuseppe Granieri
In just a few days we'll have the pleasure of interviewing Giuseppe Granieri, one of the biggest Italian experts of communication and digital cultures.
Born in 1968, he graduated in Spanish Literature. The passion for "new" has brought him from narratology (an old and maybe never forgotten passion) to deal with innovation full time.
He says that "innovation is a curious thing: being a process (and not a product), it allows me to always deal with new things: from projecting museums to designing collaborative environments in several fields, from ministeries to accademical ones, from business to cultural and touristical ones. The truth is that I have a lot of fun, first of all 'getting my hands dirty' experimenting stuff."
He has written a few books and collaborates with several publications, among which L'Espresso and La Stampa, and he also teaches at the University of Urbino.
We'll have the chance to talk about digital culture, online comunication, some of the most incredible examples of social media usage that we've seen in the last few months, and strategies for companies and especially politicians.

Prossimamente: Salvo Mizzi @salvomizzi

StartupID | Johnnie Maneiro di Clapps.me @johnniemaneiro
Buona visione!

StartupID | Johnnie Maneiro of Clapps.me
A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Johnnie Maneiro, founder of Clapps.me.
Clapps.me is a web app for the creation of internet pages or minisites that can be used for personal and professional goals or in case of particular events. Using Clapps is very simple: the user just has to insert an username and an email and the account is available straight away. It's possible to modify the page using the apps inside Clapps, such as changing fonts, colors, the background image or the position of the elements of the page, just to name a few. [video]
Johnnie explained that the project was born in Madrid after a meeting with some venture capitalists for another project, which was eventually rejected. The conversations carried on during that day, however, have motivated him to start working right away on what would eventually become Clapps, putting together all the keywords and the problems that were noted during the meeting.
The name of the service is a fusion of the words "cloud" and "apps". [video]
A few days a Japanese man created his page with Clapps and then published on the blog a walkthrough with every step, documented by screenshots, which brought a lot of Japanese users into the service. To celebrate this event, the release "Tokyo" was issued, which is the Twitter app that now can be integrated in the graphic of the page.
Soon the mobile and tablet apps will be available, since programmers are already working on them, and these last few days the integration with Instagram was issued: it allows users to have as a background the last picture taken with Instagram.
In the future there might also be an integration with Facebook, but Johnnie wants to prevent Clapps from becoming a social network, since this would mean that the profiles will be uniformed. The pages are intended to be different from both Facebook (uniformed template) and MySpace (extreme customization). [video]
Clapps will never become a paid service, since all the basic functions will remain free. The business model actually includes paid apps, so the user will be able to choose whether to buy and integrate those apps in his page or not.
As for companies, they will be able to offer their clients the chance of having a personalized page with the company logo, and this service will be paid. [video]
Clapps' numbers are promising: 50-60 new pages a day, 500 subscribers and 1000 views a day. It's a personal branding and small companies communication tool, and many are already starting to create minisites using the +5 app. [video]
I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details than my brief synthesis.
Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Stefano Epifani
A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Stefano Epifani, currently Professor of Technologies applied to Communication in the Science of Communication Faculty of La Sapienza University in Rome.
First of all Stefano explained the difference between private companies' approach to social media compared to the PA. Surely they're travelling at different speeds, but it is important to point out that private companies don't travel as fast as we might want to think: they often have difficulties understanding the importance of the revolution society is living and that only reflects on companies, which are generally used to dictate change, and now they're constrained to suffer it. [video]
The PA lives this problem at a higher level, because if companies just need to adjust to change, with all the difficulties this implies, when we talk about PA we must take into account a complex norm scenario, problems regarding internal competences and with a cultural context which is really hard to eradicate and change. The failure of the ISTAT website for the censorship is the metaphor of the inadequacy in realizing what change is happening in the society. [video]
Another topic we talked about is the use of social media by politicians. During the last few years Stefano has been analyzing, together with a research team, the activities of politicians online, and the relational dynamics have dramatically changed during the last 4 years. If the exception, just a few years ago, was that a Member of Parliament was present online, now the real exception is the politician who isn't online at all. The real problem is that, even though they are present on social media, they bring into a new tool, with new rules and especially a completely new context, rules and behaviors that are typical of the management they've done and do with mainstream tools. [video]
This also explains the frequent attacks to the freedom of the web, which in some cases are wanted, but in others aren't the result of a will of damaging the web, but of sheer ignorance regarding the way these media work. They're so far away from them that they don't even have the perception that the world has changed, making it very difficult to identify adequate norms. [video]
Stefano has also explained what the Italian Association for Open Government does: it has the goal of making the PA understand that the world has changed. Not only the world, the relationships between PA and citizen have changed, the citizen is no longer a user of a system of services, but an interactor: the PA must make the tools that allow him to interact available, and these tools are knowledge tools. [video]
The first one is the availability of data, or open data, that allow to know the reality of facts based on the information the PA holds. The PA has a great deal of data that isn't being used, that have been paid with the money of the citizens and that belong to the citizens. When we talk about open data there's always a misunderstanding regarding privacy: we're not talking about personal data, but for example the data regarding city pollution, the costs of ASLs, the levels of performance in highschools, the costs of the Comune, just to name a few. [video]
All this data should be made available to anyone not only in the format that cannot be processed which is mandatory by law, but in a format that allows processing so that citizens can compare data and start a virtuous collaboration between companies, PA and citizen. Once the data is available, it represents the infrastructure for the development of a series of services that produce wellbeing, jobs, wealth and awareness in the citizen. We're talking about the possibility for development on the one side and a door towards a more structured democracy process, which today is possible thanks to new technologies. [video]
We also talked about company communication through social media, e-learning, innovation and scientific research brought into companies, just to name a few.
I invite everyone to view the full interview, very rich in information, insight and more explanations regarding these very discussed topics.
Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Marco Zamperini
Last month we had the pleasure of interviewing Marco Zamperini, currently Chief Innovation Officer in Value Team.
We asked Marco what the current situation is as for new technologies inside companies. If 15 years ago any proposal that had to do with the Internet was seen with skepticism and wasn't considered at the same level as newspapers and television, now the situation has evolved to the point that it would be strange even for a small or medium company not to have a website. [video]
The greatest change of these last few years is the rise of social networks, that connect people much more easily, especially at a local and superlocal level. It's simpler and more natural for a small activity to open a page on a social network, managing to avoid the "avid developers". [video]
The scenario is definitely at different speeds, which means that big companies now have quite advanced use profiles, they have intercepted and understood the possibilities offered by web 2.0 (in a very broad sense). Some companies are now starting to understand that there are no longer only connected computers, but also many mobile terminals, game consoles, connected TV that make the possibility of communication crossmedial. [video]
The PA, on the other hand, is much slower, even if during these months there are various initiatives about open data (Regione Piemonte, Regione Emilia-Romagna, Governo, ISTAT), and even the fact that ISTAT's servers for the online census couldn't handle to traffic is good news, because it means that people are actually using Internet. [video]
We asked Marco what is innovation today, and in his opinion that's everything that gravitates around mobile, even if bringing applications in this context isn't easy, since business applications must be designed in a specific manner.
On the other hand many people, also inside companies, are starting to understand that the cloud is a great opportunity, but the problem remains the lack of applications, which are not ready for business use quite yet. [video]
In Marco's opinion the fears about the cloud, if they exist at all, are the product of not knowing. The real problem with the use of the cloud is the need of a very stable Internet connection, which is a difficult criterion to satisfy with the Italian infrastructure. The broadband issue will take years to solve, even though it is clear that there are noticeable differences between residencial and business connections. [video]
Marco has expressed his opinion on the f-commerce phenomenon, which in his opinion is having great success in Italy especially with the commerce of virtual goods, for example those that can be bought in social games.
It will be very interesting to observe how Facebook and Twitter will intersect systems such as Groupon and Groupalia, that currently constitute parallel circuits, but that will probably converge in the future. [video]
Finally we asked if there are any examples of 2.0 intranets that work efficiently, and in Marco's opinion there are quite a few already in Italy because innovation inside companies comes from people that outside the company use social networks, who have understood the utility and efficiency of the use of these tools inside a comunity that is protected, limited and where the trust exists by definition. [video]
The skepticism as for internal social networks is fundamentally due to two divisions, HR and IT, in which Marco has identified the pillars of conservation. First of all IT has the mission to maintain the status quo, and tends not to change anything that works unless they're forced to. On the other side HR are always quite allarmed by the use of social media, since the inevitable effect is the flattening of the hierarchic structure, so from this point of view the fear is always the loss of control. [video]
We have further explored several topics regarding social media and their use inside companies, the applications for mobile and cloud, the changes in the PA and much more.
I therefore invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details and insight than this brief synthesis.
Enjoy!
