Mi riferisco in particolare a Grillo e Battiato.

Poor country, strangled by poverty and analphabetism

Another tough week for this country. But I don't want to play the De Profundis right at the beginning of this post. I'd like to concentrate on the unappropriate use of a violent language, filled with vulgar names, in our recent public life.

I'm talking in particular about Grillo and Battiato. But while the first one doesn't surprise me anymore, the second has - I admit it - left me speechless, when he used a word as "whores" to refer to the members of Parliament in the previous legislation. Let's make things clear: in our last legislation we've seen buying and selling of parliamentaries that were truly low, deggrading and humiliating for the image of our country. Who can deny it? But from Battiato, a man of culture and with an extremely rich vocabulary, I would have never expected so vulgar tones. Because I think you can have a negative opinion on any topic, and not express it with an insult. Because a negative opinion can be just as effective and understandable by using an appropriate, non violent language.

But why is it that in this country so often people use bad language to express themselves? And here is the point: in this country only 20% of the population can read and write correctly. The other 80% have difficulties in expressing themselves both verbally and in written form. So in order to be comprehended in a clearer, more effective and direct form, the cursing words become a common use in public life as well. And here I will leave the story of Battiato which, although has shocked me quite a bit, I don't want to talk about any further.

And here we go on to Grillo and his huge success. Just how I could talk to you about the success of Berlusconi. What is it that these two people have in common? The simplicity of language, being incredibly direct with the gut, the most sensitive instincts of Italians. Because a people with a low degree of scholarization is easier to convince with hyper-simplified reasoning and a lot of cuss words.

So, it is quite simple to understand that challenging such people on the level of content is difficult. Because if you answer to "fuck yourself" and "less taxes for everybody" with argumetns such as "social justice" and "equal rights for everyone", you've already lost. Because the majority of the people will be definitely more attracted by those who express themselves in a simple manner. And because, we all know it: Italians are a particular people. They don't like to take responsibility. So, if someone arrives and takes those away from them, giving them to the enemy of the moment (from the caste to the "communist judges") there you have a plebiscite at the voting.

And nobody will ever be able to convince my that this country has been reduced like this exclusively by its political class: the political class of this country is a direct expression of its people, in good and in bad. But that's another story.

So to sum it up, the insult is the negation of reasoning and thought. And it is a true insult to the Fathers and Mothers of this country, which has seen people like Leonardo, Dante, Boccaccio, Leopardi, Manzoni and - to talk about more recent times - Pasolini and Rita Levi Montalcini (just to name a few) give shine and honor to this country in the world.

You see, I am totally convinced that economical reforms are necessary and are absolutely urgent in order to maintain that minimum of dignity we still have now, in the present. But in order to look with hope, and justified faith in the future and avoid finding ourselves again in this situation with leading clowns who decide the future of this country, we need strong investments in instruction and culture in order to largely reduce the quote of those 80% of Italians who, to an even very simple reasoning, prefer an even simpler, liberating "fuck you".

E’ l’indagine meglio conosciuta come “Pizza Connection”. [to be continued...]

The first collaborator of justice in Italy, the attack against the State and the Pizza Connection

In 1973 the stage of the mafia history receives the first collaborator of justice inside the Italian Cosa Nostra.

If ten years before it was Joseph Valachi to reveal the existence of the Sicilian criminal organization in the USA, Vitale puts on the table the names of Totò Riina, Bernardo Provenzano, Michele Greco and don Vito Ciancimino. Ciancimino who will obtain, in spite of all the shadows, in 1976, the delegation for Sicilian local institutions, after meeting the Prime Minister Andreotti, called to solve an internal problem in DC between Ciancimino and Salvo Lima.

Vitale is the first to reveal, regarding the organigram of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, the existence of a commission and admits to have killed on behalf of the mafia. The trials started because of his statements will end in smoke for "insufficient evidence" and he will be declared semi-incapable. He will only serve 7 years of the 25 he received in prison for the crimes he committed at the psychiatric prison, and once he got out, he was shot dead in 1984.

In 1978 on the train rails of the Palermo Trapani line the body of Peppino Impastato is found. Peppino was the son of a member of the Tano Badalamenti gang. It was don Tano himself who ordered the killing of Impastato, angry because of the continuous attacks the latter made from the microphones of Radio Aut.

1979 is a year of blood and also the starting point of one of the most important inquiries in the history of mafia contrast. During the first three months of '79, others lose their lives because of Cosa Nostra: the Giornale di Sicilia journalist Mario Francese and the provincial secretary of DC in Palermo, Michele Reina.

In July of the same year the lawyer Giorgio Ambrosoli finishes the practices of liquidation of the Italian Private Bank of Michele Sindona. On the 12th of July Ambrosoli is supposed to sign a formal declaration for closing the liquidation practices, but during the evening of July the 11th, the killer William Joseph Aricò unloads 4 blows of his 357 Magnum against him in Milan.

The mandator is Sindona, who paid Aricò in order to eliminate the "bourgeois hero", Giorgio Ambrosoli. To put in contact the killer and the Sicilian banker was the drug trafficant Robert Venetucci, linked to the American Cosa Nostra. At the funerals of Ambrosoli no authorities are present, but just a small group of representatives of the Bank of Italy.

The month before the financial companies of another Sicilian offender had failed: that Filippo Alberto Rapisardo, linked to the Bontate family, and which had until 1977 as main collaborator a certain Marcello Dell'Utri, before that personal secretary of Silvio Berlusconi at EdilNord.

The attack of Cosa Nostra against the State begins, and on the 21st of July of that bloody 1979 the head of the police of Palermo Boris Giuliano is killed. The killer is then identified as the boss Leoluca Bagarella, one of the main protagonists of the mafia history to come.

Two months after Giuliano, the judge Terranova and his driver Lenin Mancuso are killed, and among the killers we see Bagarella again, and Giuseppe Madonia.

1980 begins again in blood with the homicide, on the 6th of January, of the president of the Region of Sicily, Piersanti Mattarella. Two months later another protagonist appears on the scene with an inquiry that discovers a massive traffic of heroin from Sicily to the United States via Milan, the young prosecutor substitute of Palermo, Giovanni Falcone. It is the inquiry best known as "Pizza Connection". Reconstructing the traffic of drugs and gathering evidence, Falcone and the FBI gave origin and concluded one of the most important trials in history.

10minuticon Riccardo Noury @riccardonoury

Buona visione!

10minuteswith Riccardo Noury

First of all we asked Riccardo how the idea of the 10 points proposed to the candidates to the political elections in 2013: it was the need of clarity, transparency, and taking responsibility that Amnesty felt it had to ask to those who candidated to guide the country. The situation of rights in Italy is very worrying, there are many unsolved problems that have become more serious in time, lacks in the legislative system that must be solved. That is why they had to write down these 10 requests, an agenda of reforms of human rights.

The package of reforms was sent to seven candidates and to all the members of Parliament on the territory, and the answers have been quite interesting: the calculations aren't yet complete, but about 80 - 90 members have signed the requests, and all the leaders except for one have answered in a more or less complete manner. Berlusconi, Bersani and Monti have answered yes to at least 9 out of 10 requests, while the only one who still hasn't given any kind of answer is Beppe Grillo.

As for the condition of the woman in Italy, we asked what measures should be implemented in order to guarantee the respect of women's rights and to stop the homicides. Riccardo has specified that Amnesty asks for the respect of international norms, so the first step to do is to sign the Treaty of Istanbul, which has a series of measures against domestic violence. It is necessary to invest in anti-violence centres, reinforce the structures and their importance, and take a series of decisions at a legislative level, which would include harsher penalties. There's also a cultural aspect that we cannot forget, because we need to stop using expressions and stereotypes that are discriminatory of women.

About the abuses of the police forces, Riccardo has quoted the long series of abuse and torture which started in 2001: the impossibility to identify those who hit helpless people, and give them sanctions that are adequate to the seriousness of the crime they committed, has had as a consequence a lack of verdicts, and Italy gave the idea that nothing very bad happened. It is necessary to introduce the obligation to wear an alphanumeric code for police forces and introduce the crime of torture, something Italy has been delaying for the last 25 years.

We also talked about the rights of immigrants, and the measures to take in order to avoid racist and xenophobic manifestations. According to Riccardo it is necessary to stop the crossing between criminalization and criminality, two coincidental facts which make life difficult to migrants. When you have forms of criminalization by law, and a certain identity becomes a fellony (like in the case of the crime of clandestinity), you put people in the hands of criminality, victims exploited by employers whom they cannot press charges against.

As for the rights of the LGBTQ community, Italy is one of last few European countries which has no laws against homophobic fellonies or in order to guarantee equal rights to gay couples as for heterosexual couples: Riccardo specifies that the legislation is very simple, and it is the one that protects people in our country from every form of discrimination, regardless of sexual identity or taste. Any impediment that creates discrimination must be overcome with adequate laws, and this is a great problem that Italy still has to solve.

The crisis makes social differences bigger, and one might think that rights would be less important than problems that are apparently more serious, such as unemployment or taxes, but we should never forget that moreso we should pay attention to these rights, because during times of crisis they're extremely at risk.

We also talked about the rights of the incarcerated, the ones who define the 41bis a form of torture, and the situation of the Rom community in Italy. Of course, I invite you to see the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

“And he found her a pearl unpierced and unthridden and a filly by all men save himself unridden; and he abated her virginity and had joyance of her youth in his virility and presently he withdrew sword from sheath; and then returned to the fray right eath; and when the battle and the siege had finished, some fifteen assaults he had furnished and she conceived by him that very night.”

One thousand and one nights

And he found her a pearl unpierced and unthridden and a filly by all men save himself unridden; and he abated her virginity and had joyance of her youth in his virility and presently he withdrew sword from sheath; and then returned to the fray right eath; and when the battle and the siege had finished, some fifteen assaults he had furnished and she conceived by him that very night.

The first time I read this fragment, I was fascinated. A bit because it was the first time I read something so explicit and sensual, a bit because my years could still be counted on the fingers of two hands. But I found it extremely beautiful, filled with sweetness and self-giving, but at the same time impregnated by a strong sense of belonging, modesty and honor.

All things which remained deeply impressed in a young mind as mine was, so much that several years later I was drawn to search this fragment again, and possibly read the full text from which it is extracted: One Thousand and One Nights.

When we talk about this book, a seris of children fables comes to mind, such as Alì Babà and the 40 thieves, or Aladdin's lamp. A great injustice done against a text of great richness, both at formal and content level, without a shadow of a doubt intended for an adult audience, at least in the intentions of who wrote it, and who didn't spare one single detail in the description of sexual intercourses, orgies and perversities of every kind, adulteries, mutilations, incests, betrayals, homicides and seductions, tortures and erotic games. It is understandable that the translators who determined and promoted the diffusion of the book in Europe have found themselves facing extremely difficult decisions, considering the rigid morale of the time. And so entire pieces of the book disappeared, the ones considered to be too violent, and in particular all the erotic scenes.

Only in 1888 Europe received the splendid translation by Sir Richard Francis Burton, a celebration of years of arabic studies and a vast knowledge of the Middle East: a knowledge that wasn't limited just to the culture, costumes and language of the muslims, but that reveals great familiarity with the vulgar jargon and with the approach to the most intimate matters of private and sexual life. A knowledge so vast and deep that his widow, Isabel Arundel Gordon, burnt his fourty years worth collection of diaries and notes right after his death.

The story of One Thousand and One Nights is rapidly unveiled: the Persian king Shāhrīyār, who was betrayed by one of his wives and convinced that no woman could ever be faithful to her husband, decides to guarantee the fidelity of his wives by killing them after the first night. A massacre of young girls, which in short time puts tears on every family in the small kingdom and brings the people at the brink of a rebellion. In order to end the killings, the visir's daughter, Sheherazade, decides to sacrifice herself and become the king's wife, but during the night she starts telling a story which she only finished the following night, and so she goes on for many nights to come. She proves such an extraordinary narrative ability and such a spirit that the king decides every morning to posticipate her execution, until she gives her grace and welcomes her as his legitimate spouse.

Inside this literary frame the stories of a thousand and one nights come one after the other, one more fantastic (in the proper sense of the term) than the other: if we leave aside the magical element, the books manages to paint a faithful image of what was the arabic society, the traditions, the culinary arts, life at court, even fashion, courtship, love and sex. A structure that some critics like to compare to that of the Decameron, even though here we lack the order and rigor of Boccaccio's work, both in the structure and the content. There is no net division of topics and narrator, but one single narrator who manages to construct the stories in a chinese box scheme, more and more indented and deep as the nights go on.

As for the contents, saying that Boccaccio is chaste compared to One thousand and one nights is an eufemism, and doesn't quite give the idea of the amazement of those who, used to the edulcorated and censored version of the Arabic text, reads for the first time an integral fragment like the one I quoted at the beginning of this post. So I searched desperately for an unabridged version, in order to read it in all the splendor of the Italian translation, until I found the uncensored edition by Newton and Compton. I was incredibly surprised when I discovered that this entire fragment was missing, making a scene that was supposed to be rich of passion, love and life, just insipid and empty. A disappointment that was even greater since there was no evidence that the fragment owas missing, which makes it impossible for those who don't know perfectly this antique text to have an idea of where the cuts have been made. So a censored text sold as unabridged, as it often happens for the Italian versions, based in the majority of cases on the XVIII century, mutilated version by Galland.

To make a long story short, it is all about a travel, an abduction in another world: if we leave out the magical aspect again, we find ourselves in a rich and fascinating culture, which we should explore in its complex entirety, with characters of great psychological depth, much richer than certain empty figures of contemporary literary "heroes". If your copy is indeed an unabridged version.

The death of sharing and the gossipy Web

Recently during one of my lessons, I was explaining to my students that "sharing is one of the things we can do that triggers the virality of content, along with the vote (read "like" or "+1") and the comment."

As I was talking I realized, however, that the concept of sharing that I was explaining was purely mechanical and emotional: a couple of clicks, perhaps a line to explain why we like or dislike that content and that's it. It is all very far from what, just a few years a go, made the "philosophy of the Internet".

Giuseppe Granieri, in his Blog generation, explains very well how bloggers were dedicated to finding "interesting content on the web and sharing it with others". A sometimes weary work of research, selection and publication of new knowledge. The web itself, not Arpanet but Internet itself, was born to connect Universities and make knowledge available. The goal was the much advertised "collective intelligence, superior to the simple sum of the ones composing it". In essence, the concept was that reasoning together, putting intelligences together, would have brought to a collective enrichment that was impossible to reach separately.

Coming back to what I was explaining to my students, it appears obvious that it's not like that anymore. We share in the optic of the simple transmission of an information, not very different from the tendency, during friends reunions, of saying "do you know what happened or what Tizio or Caio did"? and to accompany this information only with emotional instinctive expressions: nice ugly, funny, surprising, incredible, and so on. The torsion of the concept of sharing, oeprated by social networks, has taken it much nearer what is commonly called Gossip. More than "Share", the Facebook button should be called "Transmit" or "Whisper".

It's the word of mouth dynamic, someone will answer me. In the end, the web is nothing more than the digital projection of human society and thus replicates its dynamics, whether they be nice or ugly. Here the problem isn't that the phenomenon is ugly or beautiful, right or wrong, it's that it doesn't take us anywhere, and actually only creates more problems, starting for example from the scarce reliability of information travelling on the web. The gossip dynamics doesn't include a verification of the veridicity of information per se, nor any preoccupation in terms of responsibility of the fact that we're actually publishing something.

If we add the times of the Web and the dynamics of people's attention, it appears pretty obvious that, in the end, we react in an instinctive, immediate way, trnsmitting emotions and not "knowledge" and that we tend to avoid complex content. This post itself, for example, will surely be too long for the majority of people who will see it.

But what happened to the good Jon Postel, true founding father of the Internet, who in 1981 formulated the law which carries his name and that describes the social function of the web: "Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others", which means that online it is necessary to be careful, and thus rigorous, respectful, exact and precise regarding what we propose to others. And we must be liberal,  which means open to listen and favor and respect the freedom of thought and initiative of others in the act of receiving.

In substance Postel said that the web is a social ecosystem in which the engine is the communication based on exchange, listening, respect of one another, bringing value, interaction. Who enters and communicates online has the responsibility for what they say and does, but also a responsibility towards the others, which is the taslk of interacting, listening, sharing. Sharing in a view of added value, not gossip.

This law is now dead, on a web where billions of contents flow and in which the virality is a tool that is more and more encouraged for commercial reasons, and where even the so called influencers are measured not on the quality of what they say, but on how well they can engage their communities: visibility before everything else.

I read myself and I have the sensation of having written like those nice old people who say "well, when I was young things were quite different". Might be, but I continue to think that this gossipy web, more and more similar to the commercial television is, more than anything, a huge missed opportunity.

Chi sono i padri dei Padri Puttanieri?

Gentile sig. Grillo,

No, non è andata proprio così.

Saluti,

Simone Corami | @psymonic

Who are the fathers of the pimping fathers?

Dear Mr. Grillo,
I always follow you with great attention and so I have read your latest blogpost, the one where you talk about the pimping father who will be wiped away by the sons of NN.

I understand your intention and I would like to answer with the example of my father, a normal man who still works although he's well beyond 70 years of age. I'd like to do it, but it would completely be off topic. There's one thing that doesn't quite work for me, though: your temporal horizon. Why do you only talk about the last 20 years? Are you truly convinced that all of this comes from the mid 90s, with the famous Tangentopoli?

Let's try to go back. Because I, who was born in '74, remember you. I remember you in the Saturday night shows with Pippo Baudo, you made me laugh, I also remember you at Sanremo, which you actually presented for one year, when Tomba won the Calgary Olimpic Games. Do you remember? Do you remember those productive structures, they were the same with which you did "Te la do io l'America" and "Te lo do io il Brasile". You were really good and the country laughed with you. Then the night about socialists came. No, it didn't go that way. Because that night, which has been remember with the phrase "socialists steal" is from 1986, while the Sanremo you presented is from 1988. So you did come back, and still talked about politicians and journalists. Why do you always forget those years? Always talking about Bersani, D'Alema, Berlusconi and Monti. And before? When you did the Yomo commercials, to be clear, what was happening in this country?

Mine isn't an invitation to responsibility, I haven't voted for you and I haven't changed my mind, also because I wonder why you aren't sitting in the Senate with a sign saying "worth 54 votes", since the movement, now a party, is yours with a registered copyright. Do what you will with your members of Parliament, but if streaming it must be, then let it be streaming for everything. But remember those fathers as well, the ones of the "Italian engine", of the wellbeing, of the most beautiful championship in the world. You remember the. Because you are among them, since you've continued to work with and in that system. When you worked with Tele+, before the passage to Murdoch, it was still them who came from the same environment. Then the theatres came, after coming back to Rai, even only for a 15 milion viewers night. Then you left again, you wandered around Italy in theatres and then you discovered the web. Or actually you met Casaleggio and his associates.

But let's come back to these pimping fathers, whose sons are they? Where do they come from? Where does this lifestyle come from? Are we sure that everything went down the tubes in a few years, or is it rather the obscene fruit of a way of thinking which exploded because we forgot what work was, and we just waited? Are we sure the fish starts stinking from the head, or is corruption actually something that is quite diffused in the civic society as well? Have we really had a social state? Or rather a clientelism founded on debt that managed to make everyone happy by distributing gifts, not rights. Our industrial system, if it ever existed in a stable form, was either of the state or helped by the state and the crisis is born from the system of fake contracts, something that didn't just appear twenty years ago. So where do these pimping fathers come from? Maybe a few more in depth analyses might be useful,  for your movement and its members of Parliament, but also for everyone else, I believe. For now I can only think about my father and what he taught me about ethics and work.

Regards,

Music and crowdfunding: 5 questions for the Seltons

Daniel, Eduardo, Ramiro and Ricardo: they are Selton, a young band of Brazilian origins, formed by chance in 2005 playing Beatles songs at the Parc Guell in Barcelona, and then moved to Italy thanks to the long term vision of an Italian producer. In Italy Selton has made the first album in 2008, in collaboration with Jannacci and Cochi and Renato. "Banana à Milanesa" is a record rich in latin sonorities mixed to old hits of the past.

2010 is the year of their second album, and then a period rich in collaborations, among which Dente, Calibro 35 and Daniele Silvestri, who wanted them with him on the stage of the Tenco Prize that year.

2013 is the year of the new album "Saudade", released yesterday, 26th of March. The disk has one particularity: it was made thanks of the mechanism of crowdfunding, so it was financed by the fans and supporters of the group thanks to the famous indiegogo platform.

1) Let's start from here: what is the reason that determined you to produce a crowdsourced album?

We first started hearing about crowdfunding in Brazil. We were playing in Sao Paulo and we met some people who were working on a collective financing website. The idea of financing the album with the help of the people who follow us seemed immediately great to us, but at the same time a great challenge. We put our heads on the line and in the end we had a great result.

Apart from reaching the goal, the thing that satisfied us most was getting closer to our audience. From this operation we understood that there are people who truly care about what we do and that's not a small thing to say. We've also had the great support of our "Official Facebook Group" - a group created by our fans - which has helped us a great deal in spreading the news and promoting the project. Today, having finished the album and starting to distribute it, thinking that we made it thanks to those who believe in us gives us an immense satisfaction.

2) Apparently your fans have been very generous, you actually collected more than requested. That's a nice satisfaction, isn't it? What kind of relationship do you have with your fans?

We had already done similar actions before - such as for example the collaborative video of "She's gone", or the "Selton Day" - in which we could count on the participation of our audience. The crowdfunding experience, though, has been much deeper and more important. It was a much more difficult goal to reach and it was a two months campaign, so it required a lot of time, patience, and trust from everyone. I believe that the sensation we felt (both us and our audience) in going along this path together has made our relationship become even tighter than it was before.

3) Your Facebook profiles seem always active and up to date, what value do you give to social media in your work? Do you think they're indispensable in order to make independent bands like yourselves emerge?

Surely social media have a crucial role these days. From the moment we understood this, everything started functioning better. We try to use them in the most effective way possible, both in order to optimize our actions and to generate content that is always relevant with what we're trying to communicate.

4) Battery player Daniel Plentz works at Musicraiser, a crowdfunding platform. How is it to be on the other side after the experience as a musician? And what's the relationship with the bands who search for help on the platform?

Since crowdfunding is still something relatively new for almost all the bands which decide to start a campaign, often people don't know how it works. Before starting the project, we studied many websites and many projects that we saw were working well. From this study we understood that making such a campaign work isn't easy at all, it requires truly a lot of work. First of all you need a very clear project: the goal, the costs, what you'll give in exchange to people who participate. Afterwards you need to make a video that can involve people in the right way; once these two first steps are off the table, you have to create content (during the entire campaign) that can keep the attention high on the project itself (videos, photos, and so on).

The most frequent mistakes in bands doing this for the first time is thinking that it's enough to put the project online and wait for people to participate. That is not the way it works, if people aren't motivated then you risk to fail.

That's why having our "I'm With Selton" campaign experience helps me have a more global vision on the projects that come in at work with Musicraiser.

5) The new album is available in streaming on Spotify, Deezer and Cubomusica. Some artists (and many governments) are against the free diffusion of music. What do you think about that? How important is free sharing of songs and new projects for you?

From what we had the possibility of understanding during the last few years, trying to stop the diffusion of free music on the Internet doesn't really seem possible. Starting from this premise, why not use it in our favor? The positive part is that we make the music available for free, we'll most probably reach a much higher number of people. We're not saying music should be for free, but you do need to adapt to new realities and find creative alternatives.

If you're looking for something to make your smile come back after a hard day at work, Selton are the band for you! The first dates of the new tour are also coming up soon, and their concerts are to die for: great music, great musicians, and a great desire to have fun and entertain.

Buona visione!

StartupID | Stefano Baccianella di Sportilia

The thirtysecond interview for StartupID is with Stefano Baccianella of Sportilia.

First of all we asked Stefano what Sportilia is and how the idea was born: it is necessary to point out that Sportilia is a brand that contains four different products.

The first one is the social network, Sportilia.com: it is a space that allows those who love soccer to meet and play. Not only it allows to manage invitations and organization details, but it also gives the possibility of a follow up with votes and stats on the performance and the game, something that truly is very appealing to non professional players.

The second is Sportilia REC, an innovative system for the high definition recording of sport fields. It allows non professionals, but not only, to record the game by simply bringing a USB key (the service is free or paid based on the structure that hosts the game), and also has a button that allows to cut the previous 30 seconds of play, and save it in a separate file that can be directly uploaded to YouTube, without the need to work on the full footage in order to extract one sequence (for example a goal). Moreover professional trainers can use the service to show players their mistakes while they train.

Sportilia Manager is used to organize big competitions, and allows to manage all the work, the accountability, the calendars and the formation of teams, all the typical "machine" jobs that consequently mean an important saving of time and resources.

Sportilia Find allows to find a free field and book it directly, among those of Sportilia Manager, which are the sports centers that are already Sportilia clients.

The story of Sportilia starts during the years Stefano was an informatics student in Pisa: he played soccer with a group of friends, and he got the idea of opening a very simple website to organize the games. The terrain was fertile, the website grew, and he ultimately decided to open a company and move the whole technical team to Milan. In January 2012 Stefano started the adventure of Sportilia, as its CTO.

The user experience is as simple as possible: there are two types of user. The organizer, or power user, invites his friends or creates a game. He can select a field with Sportilia Find, and define all the organization details (time, color of t-shirts, etc.). The normal user can accept the invitation to play or, if the game is public, join a team that he doesn't know to play. After the game there's one day time to vote and comment on the game and on the individual players.

The collaboration on the territory comes from the clients: Sportilia Find interrogates Sportilia Manager, on which the availabilities are always kept up to date, so that it is possible to find out in real time whether the field is free or not at one certain time. It allows to book directly, only giving a phone number as a verification.

The business model of Sportilia is polyedric: for Sportilia.com no advertising is used, it is preferred to use the model of events and sponsors through the collaboration with big brands and the organization of events on the territory or online.

Stefano has also talked about the technology behind Sportilia.com, what the perspectives for the future are and the numbers they've reached so far.

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer in detail than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

If it's the politics that doesn't understand that civism isn't enough

Before putting Italy in the hands of a "civic government" we should better understand what the civic society actually is, and in what ways it is better than politics. Or maybe, as someone suggested, we should invert the elements of the matter.

So, what is politics and in what ways is it better than the civic society? But if in a moment as delicate as this one it is important to ask questions, it is much more necessary to find adequate answers. We've heard very few clear answers so far, but there are people and groups of people who are working to find them. It happened in Lombardy for example, where the center left has decided to open up to the civic society by asking Umberto Ambrosoli, penalist lawyer without a party membership, to candidate for the Presidency of the Region.  It happened when Mario Monti, exiting prime minister, head of a coalition made up of the majority of parties present in Parliament has given birth to Civic Choice. Another civic subject, or actually "very civic", is Fare per fermare il Declino, which counts professors, economists, entrepreneurs and journalists among its members. And didn't Civic Revolution present a large part of names coming from the civic society?

Such a civic invasion in this country we didn't see for a long time, at least twenty years, to be exact from the moment Silvio Berlusconi, the first symbol of that civism he now so strenously fights, gave life to Forza Italia proposing himself as a candidate to guide the Country with a political subject that was outside the logics of old parties. So, finding an answer to the initial questions is even more difficult because it seems that politics and civic society are one the continuation of the other or, if you prefer, one is the fuel of the other. If you look beyond the events that are strictly contingent you might say that the Italian society only becomes civil when politics becomes clearly uncivic.

So it happened after the first republic crisis with the birth and the affirmation of Forza Italia and so it happened with the Movimento 5 Stelle which became the first movement of the country. So it's just normal to ask ourselves where the civic society actually was, as we intend it today, before the strong crisis of the 90s and while during the second Republic, after the first small and difficult steps it stood up to run towards the decade between 2000 and 2010.

Where were the symbols of renovation and transparency while Italy accumulated public debt or while the elected, with their behavior, delegitimated the institutions? If you hear them today, it doesn't seem possible to think that the true defensors of common good and good politics were busy following their own interests while the parties did the worst of the worst. So where is this contiguity between politics and civic society that today seems to be the fundamental elementof legitimation for anyone who is candidated to roles of responsibility for the Government of this country?

It is certainly true that the parties didn't even bother to look outside the Palace to get suggestions for the way to take, but it seems as evident that from the "real Country" no loud chorus rose, asking to be heard.

Let's get this straight, in these lines I'm not trying to defend the indefendible condition of those parties who have extremely serious responsibilities in their lack of renovation, in the lack of formation of the new political class and in the clear incapability of reading and understanding the problems of a country that needed structural answers, we're only trying to find answers that aren't limited to the sterile attribution of guilt and responsibility in such a difficult moment.

Maybe the solution isn't just in the extraneity to politics, as the defeat of centerleft in Lombardy has proved. Umberto Ambrosoli was outside of the party politics and has concentrated his elections campaign on the absolute freedom from their logics but in spite of everything he didn't win, he was defeated by Roberto Maroni, the ex Minister Roberto Maroni, the secretary of party Roberto Maroni, the candidate who bet everything on his political and administrative experience in trying to convince voters. The one who managed in his task in spite of the fact that the Lombardy centerright was in a situation that had already gone beyond the boundaries of the tragic commedy. Are we sure that the right way for the future of politics is exclusively the one of inconditioned opening to the civic society?

We should consider the possibility that the true defeat of politics is consuming itself in these very hours, during the awaited ritual of minister nomination of a possible Bersani government. Saviano, Gabanelli, respectable names of people who in doing their work have proved a lot of courage, capability and passion, names who deserve an enormous respect and that will certainly do their work in the best way possible continuing to do their jobs, fundamental jobs which have an important impact on people's daily lives, just as politics should be. But in order to govern and do politics, because it's politics the tracks on which you need to make a country run, this isn't enough.

The innocence of the civic society is not enough, the competence and the intelligence of its best exponents is not enough, we need a vision of the future and a clear and share method to get there. The condition sine qua non to have a clear vision is a clear identity, and the place where it is possible to work on this project is the party, new parties that will have to find a relationship of contiguity with the civic society and the condition of the Country but that will not only have to delegate to it the expression of the names of those who will occupy the places of extreme responsibility.

And if politics alone won't be able to understand that emptying and delegitimating itself even more than it has already only damages the country, the society will have the possibility to prove itself truly civic in trying to making it understand, perhaps asking it to fully assume its responsibilities. The price to pay, we all know it, is very high, but only starting from zero, maybe, we can hope to invert the route.

Voi state coltivando il vostro network?

What the Medicis teach us about reciprocation

One of my favorite historical documentaries that I’ve watched recently (and believe me, I’ve watched a lot) has been the PBS series called Medicis: Godfathers of the Renaissance.

As an active user of social media platforms, what strikes me the most about the Medicis is how they used what we would call networking to build their own empire. This had numerous benefits. They were able to bring numerous powerful friends into their family’s empire and gave and received many favors. However, the Medicis also suffered greatly when they lost track of that sentiment of reciprocation. This is perhaps best shown by the fact that it was a Medici Pope who ultimately inspired Martin Luther to nail his complaints about the Catholic Church to a Wittenberg church door.

How did the Medicis embody what we now call the “give to get” approach to social media? You don’t need to look much farther than to the beginnings of the Medici empire. Cosimo de Medici was really nothing more than a local banker who, through good practices, began to flourish. It was this initial growth that drew the attention of a pirate named Baldassare Cossa. Cosa approached Cosimo and his son, Lorenzo, and informed them that he wanted to try to be a Pope. All he needed was money to help support his campaign. After weighing the pros and cons, the Medicis decided to back Cosa all the way to the top, and indeed he became Antipope John XXIII (he was not exactly who the Catholic Church believed was the rightful successor but he had that Medici money behind him).

Reciprocation was no mystery to the new Pope. As soon as he assumed power, he made the Medicis his official bankers. This is what truly gave the family their power over the next many generations.

As the Medici family continued to grow in power and influence, they expanded their network throughout Europe. Lorenzo was a great patron of the arts, and no less than da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Donatello were part of the Medici’s extended family. The Medici banks across the continent helped everyone from the wealthy down to less fortunate farmers. When the Medici family needed help, they could call on this magnificent network, what we might call a community, for help.

This all eventually changed as Lorenzo became too engrossed in his extravagant lifestyle. Favors were no longer fulfilled. Banks began to close because of mismanagement. As support from the Medicis began to fail, the support the Medicis received also decreased. In fact, there was a great rebellion against the ways of life Lorenzo had supported which we now remember as the Bonfire of the Vanities.

What does the story of the Medici family teach modern users of social media? It teaches us that to build a large community, reciprocation is a must. There needs to be an understanding that favors will be returned not because there is a sense of obligation, but simply because that is what should be done. The Medicis also teach us that networking, communities, and patronage can be risky business. Just as we talked about how the Roman Empire fell because of a failure to treat their extended connections well, the Medici suffered for similar reasons, and we can suffer online as well. Nurturing relationships through support, sharing of ideas, and promotion of others is a concept that is not new to the online world. It simply has been translated from the non-digital world to the flat screen.

Are you nurturing your network? Are you creating outposts where people know they can go for support or information? Are you making sure you continue to support those who have supported you? History teaches us again and again the perils of not doing so.
