10minuticon Orazio Spoto @oraziospoto

Buona visione!

10 minutes with Orazio Spoto

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Orazio Spoto, agency director and organizer of the Instagramers community in Milan.

First of all Orazio told us how the Milan community was born: when he found out that there was no one taking care of it already, he immediately offered for the role. Having already used Instagram for several months and knowing its potential as a tool halfway between the community and the photographic app, he activated to enhance its use in the city of Milan. [video]

The community aspect has been further reinforced by the launch of Followgram: the fact that Instagram made the API public allowed several services to offer further functions in order to be more web based, thus making the interested community much larger. [video]

In Orazio's opinion it is certainly possible to use Instagram as a marketing tool because it unites several elements: first of all photography, which represents a very strong glue for the communication world; secondly the community isn't installed upon an already existing one and has logics and dynamics which are different from the ones of Twitter and Facebook; thirdly, it offers the possibility to intervene on brands on a hyperlocal level. [video]

We asked Orazio whether he thinks there is the possibility that in the future Instagram will integrate with other location based services, but it seems that for now there is no such fusion or integration in program: the search keys on a local basis will be used instead. [video]

The Milan community counts about 12.000 photos with the hashtag igersmilano, a 360° photo album of the city. IgersMilano counts 835 Instagram followers, 95 Twitter followers and 381 Facebook fans[video]

We also talked about the strategies small and big companies can implement to exploit Instagram's potential at its best, making several examples among which that of Ford.

I invite everyone to view the full interview, for further details and insight on this matter.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Marco Zamperini

Last month we had the pleasure of interviewing Marco Zamperini, currently Chief Innovation Officer in Value Team.

We asked Marco what the current situation is as for new technologies inside companies. If 15 years ago any proposal that had to do with the Internet was seen with skepticism and wasn't considered at the same level as newspapers and television, now the situation has evolved to the point that it would be strange even for a small or medium company not to have a website. [video]

The greatest change of these last few years is the rise of social networks, that connect people much more easily, especially at a local and superlocal level. It's simpler and more natural for a small activity to open a page on a social network, managing to avoid the "avid developers". [video]

The scenario is definitely at different speeds, which means that big companies now have quite advanced use profiles, they have intercepted and understood the possibilities offered by web 2.0 (in a very broad sense). Some companies are now starting to understand that there are no longer only connected computers, but also many mobile terminals, game consoles, connected TV that make the possibility of communication crossmedial. [video]

The PA, on the other hand, is much slower, even if during these months there are various initiatives about open data (Regione Piemonte, Regione Emilia-Romagna, Governo, ISTAT), and even the fact that ISTAT's servers for the online census couldn't handle to traffic is good news, because it means that people are actually using Internet. [video]

We asked Marco what is innovation today, and in his opinion that's everything that gravitates around mobile, even if bringing applications in this context isn't easy, since business applications must be designed in a specific manner.
On the other hand many people, also inside companies, are starting to understand that the cloud is a great opportunity, but the problem remains the lack of applications, which are not ready for business use quite yet. [video]

In Marco's opinion the fears about the cloud, if they exist at all, are the product of not knowing. The real problem with the use of the cloud is the need of a very stable Internet connection, which is a difficult criterion to satisfy with the Italian infrastructure. The broadband issue will take years to solve, even though it is clear that there are noticeable differences between residencial and business connections. [video]

Marco has expressed his opinion on the f-commerce phenomenon, which in his opinion is having great success in Italy especially with the commerce of virtual goods, for example those that can be bought in social games.
It will be very interesting to observe how Facebook and Twitter will intersect systems such as Groupon and Groupalia, that currently constitute parallel circuits, but that will probably converge in the future. [video]

Finally we asked if there are any examples of 2.0 intranets that work efficiently, and in Marco's opinion there are quite a few already in Italy because innovation inside companies comes from people that outside the company use social networks, who have understood the utility and efficiency of the use of these tools inside a comunity that is protected, limited and where the trust exists by definition. [video]

The skepticism as for internal social networks is fundamentally due to two divisions, HR and IT, in which Marco has identified the pillars of conservation. First of all IT has the mission to maintain the status quo, and tends not to change anything that works unless they're forced to. On the other side HR are always quite allarmed by the use of social media, since the inevitable effect is the flattening of the hierarchic structure, so from this point of view the fear is always the loss of control. [video]

We have further explored several topics regarding social media and their use inside companies, the applications for mobile and cloud, the changes in the PA and much more.

I therefore invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details and insight than this brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Prossimamente: Vittorio Zambardino @zambafeed

Coming up soon: Vittorio Zambardino

Tomorrow we'll have the pleasure of interviewing Vittorio Zambardino, Italian journalist who has worked until 2010 in La Repubblica, for which he still curates the blog Digital Scenes.

From 1975 to 1981 he has worked in political journalism: from 1976 to 1980 he has been press officer for Maurizio Valenzi, at that time mayor of Naples. He was hired at La Repubblica in 1987, where until 1995/96 he was a sportscaster: he followed the olympic games of Barcelona '92 and Atlanta '96, and the world football championship of 1990 and 1994. In the early 90s he developed a strong interest for computer mediated communication, and finally started to engage directly in online journalism or digital journalism. In 2010 he left Ezio Mauro's newspaper, continuing his blogging and writing activity.

He is recognized as the creator, chief and publishing responsibile of the website Repubblica.it: the project started in 1996 with an experimental website dedicated to the Italian political elections of 1996 and went online the 14th of January 1997. During the same year, Vittorio won the Scanno Prize for journalism.

In the early 90s he was consultant for Agorà Telematica, BBS and online communities during the years when, before 1993, access to the Internet wasn't even available for privates. From this experience he was inspired to write, in collaboration with the physicist Alberto Berretti "Internet, avviso ai naviganti" (Donzelli, 1995), one of the first analyses on the cultural impact of the web and the opportunity the Internet was for newspapers in terms of getting back credibility and audience. Integrating part of the preparation in this fields was having followed, for the Espresso Editorial Group from 1995 to 2001, the work of "News in the Future" at the Medialab MIT, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, together with Walter Bender and Nicholas Negroponte. The base idea for designing Repubblica.it is born from the knowledge of the Fishwrap project of the MIT.

From 1996 to 2001, on the Venerdì di Repubblica, he has held the Internet section of the weekly issue, on of the first appointments of digital disclosure on non specialized publications. In 2001 he opened his blog, Zetavu, in which he merges his critique for the excess of expectations for web 2.0 and a battle towards traditional publishing's conservatorism in order to bring it closer to the web. In 2008 he opened Digital Scenes on Repubblica.it, a disclosure blog, but equally critical towards resistance to innovation.

He is part of the founding nucleus of Kataweb (founded in February 1999), of which he has been general co-director and director of the newspaper portal. From 2002 to 2008 he was responsible for the Internet strategies of the Espresso Group. In 2002 he founded OPA Europe, together with Bruno Patino (Le Monde) and Mathias Mueller von Blumencron (Der Spiegel). OPA Europe is an editor association for editorial groups present on the Internet, of which he has been general secretary for 4 years.

In 2009 he published Digital Heretics together with Massimo Russo. The paper is an analysis of the dangers of the commercial "colonization" of the web, the end of its freedom and the dangers free journalism is exposed to. The book has been available for free on the dedicated website since the first day it was published. The authors have destinated the incomes of the copyright to the institution of the journalism prize with the same name, which is given every year during the Internation Journalism Festival (the organization also gets money from a Google sponsorship). The initiative has the aim of encouraging young journalists to experiment digital writing in all its forms.
Vittorio has also held the Master in Journalism of IULM, Milan.

We'll have the chance to talk about journalism and new media, and the cultural impact these changes have had during the last few years.

Of course, if you want to propose a question, simply fill in the form above!

Buona visione!

StartupID | Emil Abirascid of StartupBusiness

Our fourth interview for StartupID, Intervistato.com's section in collaboration with Indigeni Digitali, is with Emil Abirascid, founder of StartupBusiness.

StartupBusiness is a community, a reality that gathers the protagonists of the ecosystem of innovation becoming an enterprise: startups, investors, incubators, companies, universities and institutions.
Born in 2008 as a project presented at the Chamber of Commerce of Milan, that every year finds initiatives supporting the development of innovative companies, and has become a company by all means in 2010. [video]

At present it counts 2500 members and it is not only a place where you can exchange informations, resources, opportunities and experiences, but also a platform that allows third parties to offer services and opportunities. One of the main partners of StartupBusiness is Intesa San Paolo, recently some agreements have been made with Asso Lombarda, but there are also plans for other partnerships.
Moreover, through StartupBusiness startups can offer services at special conditions for the other members of the network. [video]

For whoever wants to open or is opening a startup, Emil has some advice: first of all sign up to StartupBusiness. Secondly it is necessary to have the idea, even though it is not enough by itself: you must have the competence to realize it, at least an idea of what will be your team and some management competences.
But the most important thing is to tell the idea, so that possible investors might become interested. In Emil's opinion, one of the most common mistakes is being afraid to tell the idea, because the best way to protect it is doing it. [video]

As for the financial part, in Emil's opinion it is necessary to talk about your idea, your business plan, the numbers and the market impact you prospect, so that you can propose it to business angels and venture capitalists.
StartupBusiness itself holds regular Business Plan Competitions, occasions in which startups are called to present their idea in front of an audience of investors. [video]

The StartupBusiness team is currently working to develop the technological components of the website, adding new sections that will make the informative and the networking possibilities even more complete.
There are several growth perspectives: on the one side various organizations, such as banks and companies are realizing that the innovative startups ecosystem has value, but some of them haven't yet developed the ability to approach this world by their own.
The other development path is the opening to the international market, especially the Mediterranean area, very rich in opportunities. [video]

The sign up request has to be approved, since the aim is the quality of the community, more than the number of members, and the type of startup of the SB galaxy isn't just related to web and ICT, but also nanotechnologies, biotechnologies, robotics, alternative energy, aerospace and new materials.
A constellation of innovative startups in very different fields that represent a great value and opportunity for the economy of the country. [video]

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in detail and information than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Fabio Lalli

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Fabio Lalli, founder of the Indigeni Digitali network and compulsive startupper.

The Indigeni Digitali network was born one and a half years ago from an idea that Fabio has often brought in the companies he has worked in: periodical informal drinks, a chance to do knowledge sharing among people working in different divisions inside the same company.
Afterwards the drink soiree was extended to the web, and it has become "Indigeni Digitali", growing and spreading rapidly in Rome and in the rest of Italy.
Each of the feathers in the Indigeni Digitali logo has a meaning, they represent the values of the  Indigeni and they basically are a synthesis of Pekka Himanem's Hacker Ethic[video]

Inside the network there aren't just programers and technicians, but also people who work in communication, managers, people who have already done business: these hybrid competences have lead to new projects, startups and even new job opportunities.
The future goals are on the one side make the network bigger, and it has already started to attract the interest of some ivnestors, on the other side maintaining the aspect that Fabio thinks is the most important: the selfless and useful approach. It's a network a people who help each other without brand interests or influences. Sponsors actively participate and make the network grow, but they don't modify the values and the model of the network itself. [video]

Fabio has stressed the importance of the collaboration with universities: Indigeni Digitali can represent a great opportunity for transferring experience from managers and entrepreneurs to people who are just now finishing college, and make new projects to light. [video]

Fabio has also talked about Followgram, an app born from the collaboration with Lorenzo Sfienti which allows users to extend Instagram's basic functions. The app has become extremely popular a very short time and it has been reviewed by CNN and The Next Web, and is also currently used by important brands such as AirFrance, British Airways, Audi and Converse.
Followgram's numbers are very promising: in 2 months 8600 have been generated (update: 16.600) vanity URLs, and the app counts 150 - 160 subscriptions, 17.000 unique users and 50.000 visited pages a day.
The app's success has brought its founders to think about a pro model that could be monetized. [video]

As for the economical aspect of startups, Fabio thinks that most projects should be self-sustainable and adopt a model that allows them to go online in a structured fashion, without needing money before they even start.
This is a good exercise for understanding in what way costs can be optimized, and not be obliged to grow in a constant tie between costs and revenues. [video]

We also talked with Fabio about enterprise 2.0, systems that are more evolved than classic Intranets: in his opinion the biggest prejudice companies have towards these kinds of approaches is the fear of losing control.
His experience inside companies that have adopted these systems is veery positive. Users were very responsibilized when they were bringing their contribution inside the company platform, and the advantages were obvious: firstly of all the availability of information, secondly the engagement that brings to reinforcing the sense of belonging to the company and increasing the closeness between employer and employee. [video]

We continued talking about geolocalization, crowdsourcing, the advantages and disadvantages of closing social networks inside companies and much more.

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in insight and details than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Paolo Iabichino

A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Paolo Iabichino, creative director in Ogilvy.

Firstly we asked Paolo to describe the evolution of advertising in Italy in time: his opinion, however, is that there hasn't actually been a real evolution.
From a storiographic point of view, the modern version of advertising starts in the 50s, 60s, when the big networks arrive in Italy and open their agencies: in this sense, advertising in Italy has mostly been endured rather than produced. [video]

One of the greatest intuitions of Italian advertising in a modern interpretation was undoubtedly the Carosello, and there's nothing similar to it in the rest of the world. The stories and the characters have entered the common imagination are linked to the work of Armando Testa, who has created icons that are still present and relevant in the television advertising scenario. [video]

Unfortunately Italian advertising isn't very mature: in Paolo's opinion it's 15 - 20 years behind the big trends we see in the rest of the world. In some countries campaigns are developed in a crossmedia fashion, regardless of the utilized medium, while in Italy 60-70% of the investments go into TV ads.
We're talking about a country that still treats Internet in a superficial manner, seeing it as a media and not as a habitat inside which you can insert your messages.
Even inside social networks the logic is the logic of GRP, so even though new, engaging ways to put brands and clients into contact already exist, the mindset is still anchored to onedirectional TV logics. [video]

To do advertising in a crossmedia manner it is necessary to forget the mean: campaigns that work the best are the ones that focus on the idea, and in Ogilvy we talk of "ideal".
You start from the idea and then you make sure that the different activated means don't limit their function into developing the idea of communication: to integrate the idea it is necessary to make sure that the language used is determined in function of the mean in which that idea expresses itself. [video]

During the last few years advertising has lost power, charisma, even creating mistrust; in Paolo's opinion, however, it would be a mistake to consider  unconventional marketing (viral, flash mobs, guerrilla marketing) as the final solution to solve the crisis of traditional advertising.
The risk is to replicate inside the new dynamics the same mistakes, because the logic is still one of intrusiveness, interruption, not relevance. [video]

We asked Paolo how useful buying Fans and Likes on Facebook actually is: in his opinion these are useful and legitimate tools if you need a critical mass to enhance a message. The problem is that people don't stick around a brand for long if there isn't constant interaction, dialogue and a production of content that makes them feel a part of the history of the brand. [video]

Advertising seen as an engagement tool, since it continues to have an important role in the macroeconomy scenario and is the main driver of shopping and economical development.
Advertising is something small compared to the cultural, social and anthropological scenario that is so drastically changed: at the moment the most important thing to do is put people in the center of the scene. [video]

We talked about invertising, the importance of scientific research in advertising (both from a technological and a psychological point of view), the etimo of the marketing lexicon, neuromarketing, sentiment analysis and future expectations for advertising in agencies and companies.

I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in details and insight than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Prossimamente: Diego Bianchi @zdizoro

After the degree in Political Sciences, he has worked since 2000 as content manager of Excite Italia, where he started his blog, La Z di Zoro, in 2003.

On the 25th of September 2007 he started the production of the video series Tolleranza Zoro: first talking about the Big Brother, then about politics - Democratic Party, creating the character of a Democratic Party voter who constantly has identity crisis. Initially published on his blog and on his YouTube channel, the video series had an immediate success. Starting from 2007 until the end of May 2010, Zoro has curated his own section on the newspaper Il Riformista, named La posta di Zoro.
