Buona visione!

StartupID | Stefano Baccianella di Sportilia

The thirtysecond interview for StartupID is with Stefano Baccianella of Sportilia.

First of all we asked Stefano what Sportilia is and how the idea was born: it is necessary to point out that Sportilia is a brand that contains four different products.

The first one is the social network, Sportilia.com: it is a space that allows those who love soccer to meet and play. Not only it allows to manage invitations and organization details, but it also gives the possibility of a follow up with votes and stats on the performance and the game, something that truly is very appealing to non professional players.

The second is Sportilia REC, an innovative system for the high definition recording of sport fields. It allows non professionals, but not only, to record the game by simply bringing a USB key (the service is free or paid based on the structure that hosts the game), and also has a button that allows to cut the previous 30 seconds of play, and save it in a separate file that can be directly uploaded to YouTube, without the need to work on the full footage in order to extract one sequence (for example a goal). Moreover professional trainers can use the service to show players their mistakes while they train.

Sportilia Manager is used to organize big competitions, and allows to manage all the work, the accountability, the calendars and the formation of teams, all the typical "machine" jobs that consequently mean an important saving of time and resources.

Sportilia Find allows to find a free field and book it directly, among those of Sportilia Manager, which are the sports centers that are already Sportilia clients.

The story of Sportilia starts during the years Stefano was an informatics student in Pisa: he played soccer with a group of friends, and he got the idea of opening a very simple website to organize the games. The terrain was fertile, the website grew, and he ultimately decided to open a company and move the whole technical team to Milan. In January 2012 Stefano started the adventure of Sportilia, as its CTO.

The user experience is as simple as possible: there are two types of user. The organizer, or power user, invites his friends or creates a game. He can select a field with Sportilia Find, and define all the organization details (time, color of t-shirts, etc.). The normal user can accept the invitation to play or, if the game is public, join a team that he doesn't know to play. After the game there's one day time to vote and comment on the game and on the individual players.

The collaboration on the territory comes from the clients: Sportilia Find interrogates Sportilia Manager, on which the availabilities are always kept up to date, so that it is possible to find out in real time whether the field is free or not at one certain time. It allows to book directly, only giving a phone number as a verification.

The business model of Sportilia is polyedric: for Sportilia.com no advertising is used, it is preferred to use the model of events and sponsors through the collaboration with big brands and the organization of events on the territory or online.

Stefano has also talked about the technology behind Sportilia.com, what the perspectives for the future are and the numbers they've reached so far.

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer in detail than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

[video]

Vi invito a visionare l‘intervista integrale, ricchissima di dettagli e approfondimenti.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Emanuela Zaccone

Some time ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Emanuela Zaccone, social media analyst in Telecom Italia and an expert in social TV: we talked about big data, social networks and the opportunities that social TV represents for companies, politicians, and even traditional TV shows.

First of all we asked Emanuela how she believes the huge amounts of data gathered by mobile apps and sensores will be managed, and in what way they could be used for the benefit of the community. Emanuela revealed that at the MIT there are already several projects in this area: the data are gathered from mobile webs or from sensors, and thanks to this data a few activities of public utility have been implemented. [video]

The problem of privacy, which is much more complicated to solve in Italy, has been managed through a system of policies and explicit requests of authorization, and thanks to them quite a few useful services have been put to work.

Another question we asked Emanuela is about networking: she consideres it essencial if you manage to make it work as a web, and conceive yourself and the relationship as a know inside a system. You must have the awareness that the web should be biunivocal in order to be effective, and Emanuela thinks that it has great value as a mean to collaboration. [video]

We asked Emanuela for her definition of social TV: in her opinion there is a lot of confusion around this term, since it is often seen as an "umbrella term", that includes many interpretations, types of integration and enrichment of TV shows with an online presence.

She believes the matter to be more complex, one that deals with the matter of hardware on the one hand - smart TVs and connected TVs, and the potential that they have -, and on the other with software in a very broad sense, from online platforms to mobile apps. There are also devices that offer streamig and aggregation of fluxes all together, or those that associate the aggregation to proper gamification dynamics. [video]

As for the role of social TV in politics, we asked if it's only about opening the microphone or whether it is a true opportunity to do some partecipative democracy. In Emanuela's opinion, many politicians either use social media in the wrong way because they haven't understood how they function, or they simply use them as yet another channel where to get visibility in a unilateral way, ignoring the fact that they are actually channels for dialogue. [video]

Social TV offers opportunities, but also risks to big companies: a great oil company would be in great difficulty if it opened the conversation about its activities. At the same time, however, offering a dialogue channel and illustrating the operational processes in a collaboration optic, for example sollicitating the public to find better solutions, could actually become a great opportunity for mutual enrichment. [video]

Finally we asked what the most interesting case of social TV she's seen so far is, and Emanuela has made some distinctions: when you talk about apps, it's definitely Miso. Even though Get Glue has struggled to partner with other players in the television and videogames fields, she believes it didn't manage to surpass Miso, that even got people to produce sideshows of great quality. If we talk about the use of social tools to impact on the story telling and create conversation around topics, the winner is certainly HBO. They managed to make the characters live, make them interact with people as an extension of the story telling and they have implemented a great deal of crowdsourcing projects, integrating fan requests inside the series themselves. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer in details and insights.

Enjoy!

E' nata #StartupPeople

Keep calm & Startup.

StartupPeople and the startup ecosystem in Italy

"For quite a while now we've been talking about the startup ecosystem in Italy and more and more ofte, inside the main Italian communities, there's talk about creating a web of relations that will allow the system to develop and evolve. Starting from this point, we put a question: at what point are we with the Italian startup ecosystem and most of all, what are the social relationships that have developed on the territory and have allowed this evolution?"
Fabio Lalli

StartupPeople is born as a research project, and is the fruit of the collaboration of three entities: the Indigeni Digitali Association, Intervistato.com and La Nuvola del Lavoro, on Corriere.it.

The first step was the development of the map: Italian startups have been registered on the map (there are currently 212 startups). This will allow the analysis of the distribution on the terriory and the study of the data in relation to the position of economic and financial power centers.

In a second step there will be the analysis of the social web of the founders, which willl be done by Prof. Ivana Pais, researcher in Sociology of economical and work processes. The analysis will allow to have a much deeper panoramic in what is the real nature of the web underneath the startup ecosystem in Italy.

The third step will be done by Intervistato.com: the founders that are willing to, will be able to give an interview for the format StartupID, in which to speak about the genesis of the startup, the business model, the technology behind it and the perspectives for the future.

The analysis of the social webs will be published on the blog Nuvola del Lavoro, on Corriere.it, while the interviews will be available both on Nuvola del Lavoro and Intervistato.com.

Finally the platform StartupPeople, managed by Indigeni Digitali will develop and evolve: some functions will be developed, that will allow the update of the startup's page through a dedicated account. StartupPeople will be an actual repository and a resource for every Italian startupper and not only, and the data will be available under the form of API. Anyone who wants to, can already insert their startup here: http://startup.indigenidigitali.com/

Keep calm & Startup.

Buona visione!

Maria Petrescu | @sednonsatiata

StartupID | Lorenzo Sfienti of Followgram

The seventeenth interview for StartupID is with Lorenzo Sfienti, founder of Followgram.

Followgram is a web application that allows to create profile pages for Instagram accounts, adding several functions that increase its potential, such as the album and the RSS feed. The numbers are quite interesting, we're talking about 51.000 registered users, a traffic of 600.000 visits and more than 300.000 unique viewers, with an average of 100 to 110 users connected to the website at all times. [video]

The idea was born on the 6th of July 2011 from a conversation with Fabio Lalli, the founder of Indigeni Digitali, and from the fact that the main missing function on Instagram was the one of the profile page: there was no way to share the profile or insert a button on a website. In one night the primary source code was written, on one hand as a game, on the other as a challenge to Instagram's APIs. [video]

As for the perspectives of new implementations, Lorenzo thinks that the first thing to improve is the charging time: the engine behind Followgram is a bit slow, but the updated version has solved the issue. The second is the platform usability, which will be adapted based on users' feedback. Followgram has had important users from the very first version: the two founders of Foursquare, several startuppers, newspapers. La Stampa has recently started a project that exploits the platform. [video]

The business model is based on brands, especially those in the fashion industry. The idea is to offer professional services, among which the creation of online contests through the platform, especially considering the fact that Facebook doesn't allow the use of its functions for contests, but also other functions that will only be available with a premium account. [video]

We asked Lorenzo what the relationship with Instagram is, but he told us that it is basically not existend: Followgram is mentioned in the Help section of Instagram in the part dedicated to services, one of the two founders of Instagram has a Followgram account, but beyond that there are no relations. As for future perspectives, Lorenzo has indicated as next goals the implementation of proprietary functions and the redesign of the website usability, but also and foremost the monetization[video]

Finally we asked who the members of the team are: Lorenzo Sfienti, who writes code, Fabio Lalli, responsible of the business development, and Annalisa Puracchio, graphic designer. There are already several perspectives of enlarging the team, especially with figures that can deal with the coding part, but probably they will be in search of some support for the design as well. [video]

I invite you to view the interview, much richer in details and insights.

Enjoy!
