Bersani, Marini, and that missed step backwards between PD and Quirinale

Honestly, a few weeks ago I would have expected the step backwards from Bersani. Not because I don't like him, I voted for him and sustained him. And I'm not going to take that back. As I don't take back my idea of Renzi as unfit to lead the PD, at least for now. But there's a moment when in order to be honest with those who voted for you, you have to put an end to it.

You have to go back and open a debate. Giving the party (to the men, women and young people) the decision of the path to choose. Bersani tried to resist, to pursue what he believed was the right track (and we must aknowledge that), but maybe too much and for too long.

He wanted to keep the wheel steady, even though - as it was predictable - if you go towards a storm the risks are two: either mutiny, with the intent of taking control and going away from it (and we've had a taste of that with the first elections of the President), or sinking, and if the boat goes down, we all go down with it.

But on the boat there are also crew and passengers. Which are the exponents of the party and its voters. You can't get away from that.

The missed step backwards when he was still on time, has widened the dissent already present in the party itself, but during the last few hours it is also engaging a large part of it which was still rooting for Bersani until just a few weeks ago.

I wrote about it yesterday here on Intervistato.com: the fights, the clashes inside the party, the stubborness of some elements to want to go ahead with their ideas regardless of the consequences - and the base? - is ending up confusing the voters. Personally I find myself in a situation of utter incapacity to decipher the direction the PD and its components want to give the party in the following days, weeks, and it scares me.

Today Franco Marini who after the vote didn't want to step back has reminded me of a recent story, a stubborness that in these weeks has disturbed me and has found me contrary: the one of Bersani. And that's the reason of Marini's defeat, as a shared candidate, in the first call for the election of the President. But it is also the defeat of the Bersani strategy for the PD.

Let's hope the next hours will bring counsel.

Persa ormai altrove, in pensieri propri e totalmente svincolati dalle logiche famigliari. Separati in casa.

Forse troppo e troppo a lungo.

Separated at home, the PD: an ending story?

The kids of separated or divorced parents knows, it's never simple. The confusion and the tension you're constantly exposed to in the phase preceding the division in some cases, especially on younger children, often risks to leave the mark.

It starts out with small tensions, barely perceptible disagreements. It goes on with futile fights, but even more violent on decisions, not always fundamental. It goes on until one of the two doesn't give in and accepts the wishes of the other. Unless, with a push of pride, they take it all back and goes to the first decision raising the barricade once again.

Let's take the summer holidays: a few months before the summer the debate begins. Seaside or mountains, seaside, mountain, then the compromise: the countryside. The tension goes down, until the moment one of the two goes back to their position. So it goes on until the summer, when it's too late and all places in the mountains, the seaside and even in the countryside are finished. So it ends that they all remain in the city, in the same house, looking at eachother filled with resentment. Who is the loser? Just ask the kids who are forced to stay in the summer heat in the city.

From fights, from the bad conflict, you get to the crucial shift. The one where the two parents both live in the same huse but aren't there with their heads. It's lost somewhere else, in their own thoughts and totally unbound from familiar logics. Separated at home. They don't follow those goals that are necessary to bring the family outside of the crisis, but they follow their own, personal line.

It's the moment when the kids don't understand anything anymore. They don't know whether they can count on the integrity of the family, they don't know whether they have a family anymore, not even which of the two contendents to look at. Who's right? Who's wrong? In the interest of whom? In the end the kids end up closing themselves and getting away from the voices of both.

So there, during the last weeks as a PD voter I've felt like that kid, confused in assisting at the continuous and grave fights inside the party. A party that can't agree on mountain or seaside, a party separated at home, and which risks to find everywhere fully booked. And the temptation of getting away from it all is really strong.

The answers (or not) of Matteo Renzi, Nichi Vendola and Pierluigi Bersani to the readers' questions

During these last few weeks we carried on an activity that, in some ways, can be described as an attempt to participate to public life in a completely new way.

We collected and published our readers' questions for Matteo Renzi, Nichi Vendola and Pierluigi Bersani. Against all the odds, the participation has been huge, leading to gather 50 questions for Matteo Renzi, who was the first.

Matteo Renzi

As we described in detail in the post "The non answer of Matteo Renzi to our readers' questions", the questions have remained without an answer. We knew that 50 questions are a lot, and answering during the campaign would have been difficult, but when the staff answered saying that they were already working on it, and Matteo Renzi himself promised publicly that they would give us everything in one day, we were very pleasantly surprised.

The surprise wouldn't last for long, since the promises haven't been kept, they simply suggested to go see the website. After 15 days of promises and waiting, we expected - with reason - something more, because the program doesn't really answer the questions, and in the cases it does, it's only marginal.

So, to sum it up, when it comes to Matteo Renzi, we're still waiting for an answer, as he promised, to the 50 questions.

Nichi Vendola

On November the 21st we published the questions collected for the Apulia Governor Nichi Vendola, whose staff asked us for the transcript in order to make it easier for him to answer. So after two days, they sent us the answers you can find above. 40 answers for 40 questions from social networks, a proof of great sensibility toward the topics related to new technologies and new possibilities of participation to public life.

Pierluigi Bersani

On November the 28th we published the questions for the current secretary of PD, Pierluigi Bersani. The answers arrived in about two days, you can read them above.

Of course, the goal aren't the primaries of center-left wing, but the political elections. This opportunity to ask questions to politicians in a completely new way, using daily use tools, which Italian politics is just starting to use now, has been greeted with enthusiasm by those who participated.

There's no doubt on the fact that we can get better at it, but we do need to think about a few things: it is obvious that there's a desire to do something new and different regarding democratic participation to public life, and this desire should find solution in some kind of format or new opportunity, that can allow a real participation to public life thanks to the new tools citizens have.

Citizens who live the web and use it every day, and whose vote has an importance.

Matteo Renzi's (non) answer to our readers' 50 questions

Every once in a while, politics renews itself. It changes faces, perspectives, ideals, and reproposes itself with a clean face that promises radical changes and opening to innovation.

Maybe that is the reason why, at the beginning of November, we engaged our readers in a project that reflected precisely the tendency encountered during these last few months in Italian politics, which is the availability to dialogue with the web and with the citizens that through social media try to get information on the topics that regard them more closely.

We started with Matteo Renzi, who has made a pillar of his campaign of the importance of the web, and who built a great deal of his image of young politicians on social networks.

So, on November the 7th, we published a post on Facebook, inviting everyone to tell us what question they'd like to ask Matteo Renzi in case we had the opportunity to interview him. At the same time, we launched on Twitter the hashtags #intervistatu #Renzi, which readers used in order to send their questions. The participation rate has been incredible: in just a few days about 50 questions on the most diverse topics have arrived, from conflict of interests to the topics of the end of life, from the financial world to the actions against mafia infiltrations and organized crime, a topic that is notoriously ignored in the candidates' programs, Renzi's included.

On November 12th we published a post with a Storify that put together all the material arrived from the users, from tweets to Facebook comments. The post encountered an incredible enthusiasm from readers, who at that point set themselves to wait for Matteo Renzi's answers. In a matter of hours, we received a tweet from the account Adesso Partecipo ("now I participate" n.d.r.), with the request to send the transcription of the questions of the Storify, a request that was then suspended because the staff said they we already working on it.

On the 15th of November we sent the 50 questions via email anyway, and waited further answers, only to receive this tweet: "As you can see, he's very busy now... but we've made a committment."

Awesome. Committments are sacred, so we set ourselves to wait those answers that we thought would arrive in a matter of hours now. A hope that has been deceived in the following days, during which we still continued to sollicitate for an answer.

On November the 20th we received a tweet from Matteo Renzi himself, promising that he would answer our questions "before tomorrow bye".

A tepid consolation that was soon deceived by the silence during the next day, and the next day after that. A few requests for answer later, here's another promise, along with what looks like excuses for the delay: "I'm late, it's true, but I promise to answer before the elections, not later than tomorrow".

Just one day and our readers could finally have, after 10 days of wait, an answer to their questions. But yet again they have been deceived: another request, and today we get this tweet: "I've seen the questions, all the answers are in the program and in the "Truths about Matteo" section of the website."

Well, we can't deny we were a bit puzzled by this non answer. If it really had been this one, then it couldn't have taken 11 days to write, and surely there wouldn't have been any need to promise and delay so many times.

If this was only about reading the text of the program in order to have an answer, everyone who sent a question would have just done it: but if you look closely, many topics are missing, others are only marginally discusssed, and a clear and concrete answer lacks entirely.

On the other hand, it is true that 50 questions are many, but if a politician wants to be the Prime Minister of a country, 50 questions are surely not a problem, especially for someone who presents himself as a careful listener of the Web. We chose not to  censor the question of readers, not select them and not change them since the needs and doubts that are expressed there can be those of anyone, and the answers have an impact on the lives of everyone, not only those who sent the questions.

We're not alone, by the way: someone is still waiting for the answers to Greenpeace's 6 questions, for which the length is surely not an alibi. And yet, silence there as well. But a committment is sacred, as we said earlier. Too bad.

Wr hope that Matteo Renzi changes his mind and respects his committment. Or else it would be the first promise he deceives.

#Csxfactor vs. #ilconfrontoskytg24: almost 100.000 tweets, and @matteorenzi the most mentioned

The political debate held on SkyTG24 among the representatives of today's Italian center-left, has engaged Twitter users in a very intense way. Users have followed the conversation on the debate with the official hashtag #ilconfrontoskytg24 and the alternative created by @nomfup, #csxfactor.

In detail, the total number of tweets registered during the even was 92.473, active unique users almost 20.000, for a total of 152.666.317 impressions (the sum of the potential views of the tweets). A true record at a media level for the leaders of center-left, who have led the discussions on Twitter for the entire evening of November the 12th, reaching a maximum peak of conversations at 22, when 1.250 tweets per minute have been reached.

The top posters of the evening were @_pierini_ (131 tweets), @argotone (116) and @michele_darling (110), accounts that are representative of the young, nerdy audience that animates Twitter to start a conversation with the system and criticize it if necessary.

The users who have generated most impressions during the debate are the newspapers or media companies that have found a strong online positioning on social networks as well. First of all, @Fattoquotidiano with almost 30 milion impressions, followed by @skytg24 and @corriereit. Among the politicians present at the debate (with profiles active on Twitter) the most mentioned have been @MatteoRenzi (4.116 dedicated tweets), @pbersani (2.496) and @NichiVendola (1.574).

50 questions to Matteo Renzi

Time for primary elections, everybody knows it, even rocks know it, and Matteo Renzi knows it as well, the man who has a lot at stake in the game, or at least this is how it looks like.

It seems that the little Florence Obama, who changed the presidential "Change" first with "Scrapping" and then with "Now", is the great news, because he managed to create a space where it seemed there was none.

We're curious, we people of the web, we people of the online, of social networks and so on, so we gathered a few questions, well let's say they were quite a few, but we selected them and we would really appreciate if Matteo took a little bit of his time to answer. Perhaps when he's in his camper and comes home from a day of "primary" elections campaign, or early in the morning when he's still fresh.

Renzi is present on social networks, and with great strength, so it wouldn't be very well mannered of him to ignore us. We want to learn more about the topics we found on the website, the ones we listened to in political talk shows and entertainment shows. For example what he thinks about the Tobin tax, about the separation of judiciary carreers, what he thinks about the biological testament and assisted procreation, of how you fight tax evasion and how to fight mafia in the real economy, which he has well reminded as well.

We are voters, and it's always good to remember it: perhaps some of you won't vote for him, others maybe will, the important thing is to have confrontations, which don't need to happen with his competitors, but first of all with the people.

This is what we are: people, curious people, which might be a defect, direct, honest, no strange words, we listen to everyone and will listen to you as well.

If you will answer.

Ancora Nicodemo:

Open conversation about the Matteo Renzi phenomenon: Barbara Collevecchio answers Francesco Nicodemo

A few days ago Francesco Nicodemo wrote an article in which he listed the positive aspects of Matteo Renzi's elections campaign, and asked for Barbara Collevecchio's opinion about it. As promised, Barbara answers on each point.

Francesco writes:

1) Strong leadership: the first result of Matteo Renzi's challenge, when the field wasn't yet defined, is having obtained that the primary elections were open, so that anyone could compete to become the leader of the center-left wing. Even Bersani understood that a strong legitimation from the people was necessary to affirm a stronger leadership.

I've been talking for years with exponents first of the Margherita and then of PD, for matters of personal friendship, so I believe I'm aware of the "dinosaurism" that commands in those parties. What has always impressed me, since I was very young, was going out to dinner with these friends and seeing that their political dialogues were completely different from the ones I did with exponents of associations or independents, but strongly active in social politics. What I want to say is that for some sort of psychic submission to party organs linked to currents, I've seen young people more worried about how to obtain more endorsment or power inside currents than attention to strong topics like defending the poor and the unprotected categories. In many articles I've attacked the PD for its hybrid composition, for who it was born from an unusual mix of dorotheys and ex-comunists. More than once I've written about the inability of this apparatus to renew itself and give space to young people. What I would like to say is this: ok, Renzi broke the silence. But did he do it to weigh more inside the party, to create yet again a strong, popular current, or for true innovator spirit? The image Renzi communicates to me is that of a very ambitious young man, no different from those that I've known. I'm not talking because of prejudice and I will motivate what I'm saying in the following points.

Nicodemo writes:

2) Volunteer elections committees: in a difficult moment for traditional parties, while sections and circles close and a wave of disdain grows because of the recents scandals, it is amazing to see the birth of thousands of committees for Matteo Renzi along the whole peninsula.

I agree on this point as well. It is undeniable that Renzi has coagulated a lot of protest. Cleverness, calculation or political sincerity? "In a difficult moment when a protest grows" it is easy to attack and do propaganda by riding a popular topic such as "scrapping", but is this topic ridden for opportunism? What does Renzi say about his own future Scrapping? Is it right that a mayor, as in the worst tradition, abandons his city leaving it to whom? And goes around riding waves of popular bitterness for his own ambition?

Nicodemo continues:

3) Bottom-up involvement: there are no hierarchies, no regional or province referees, no party structure in the committee management. In this elections campaign, the relationship is direct through the website, social networks, through a strategy of envolvement that is clearly bottom-up.

It is true that Renzi, copying the American myth and hoping to have the same success Obama had, is involving many people from the bottom. But has Renzi asked himself what the base of the party wants, the one he doesn't leave but criticizes so strongly? The base of the PD is strongly against Casini's UDC and centrist alliances. Renzi is listening to himself and his ambitions, does he feed anti PD bitterness or does he listen to the left wing base of his party? Does he want to possess and occupy it, modify it or what? Of what base are we talking about?

4) Reinforcement of online communication: the next elections will be the ones in which the Web will have a specific weight. Inevitably the primary elections anticipate what will happen in Spring. Matteo Renzi has curated online communication very much.

Listen, this is one merit Renzi really can't take for himself, Grillo and his blog speak for themselves, the true revolutionary miracle of the web is his and I'm saying it without being a fan (as it is known), but for love of truth.

Matteo Castellani Tarabini | contepaz83

Marchionne, Renzi and the small poor city of Florence

Lately Marchionne has defined Renzi a nasty imitation of Obama who plays the American part, but even worse, he defined Florence as a tiny city. Perhaps Fiat's CEO doesn't know the history of the city, but most of all he doesn't realize that he's the one playing the American.

In short, Marchionne told Renzi, in reply to his statements on Repubblica, that he is an ugly copy of Obama. One who plays at being American. Strange. I thought that Marchionne liked Obama and America, given his recent stories that, were it not for that sweater he always wears, he could even be mistaken for someone from Kansas City. Of course, it's not for the mayor of the tiny city that I'm mad, but for the inhabitans of that city and the history it represents that I am angry, because there are so many ways to say things. Perhaps FIAT's CEO is now used to the big American metropolitan cities and Dante's city now looks like a small, dark, corner to him.

And yet Marchionne should know that Florence, that tiny little city, has been the Capital of Italy after Turin, in that attempt at uniting the country that took the name of Reign of Italy. Without even considering the artistical, cultural and economical contribution that it had during the Middle Ages, and afterwards under the Medici family. A small city, but the craddle of Renaissance.

So one of the places in this country, where even before it become what it is now, Italians gave their best. So maybe the CEO of a small tiny auto company should better read the history of that small tiny city and perhaps take example from it before it runs to risk of transforming other urban realities in small tiny cities inhabited by poor people.

Probably Renzi is now playing the mini-Obama, but if there's one person who plays the real deal with all the stereotypes, included looking at the world from above, then that is certainly Marchionne. The CEO of a small auto company that perhaps was great once, but that now is so wrapped around itself that it can't find the exit, except for the great escape abroad, without caring about what it took from this country and its people during these last few decades and of what it should have given back, even only for kind courtesy.

Communication efficacy and clear goals: Matteo Renzi's strategy at the primaries

Stefano Menichini is quite right in his Tuesday editorial on Europa, the criticism towards Matteo Renzi during these last few weeks - in a more systematic way since the Secretary of PD and Nichi Vendola have made their candidacy to the primaries official - are absolutely instrumental. Not only they do not make Florence's Mayor weaker, they reinforce him by creating a series of appointed defensors that probably until some time ago weren't even so convinced they supported him. When you think in closed departments, it happens that dialectics crashes on the wall of predefined, granitical positions. The accusation of copying some points of the ufficial party program launched by Stefano Fassina, sounds bizarre to the least; many have wondered whether the economical responsible for PD knew that Renzi doesn't candidate himself with Lega Nord, and that maybe it would be stranger to see the contrary, that the programs of the two candidates were too different on some fundamental topics.

The SEL secretary has started his elections campaign by accusing the young challenger of adopting "old cultural models, steeped in liberism and that should be eliminated", leaving part of the voters amazed wondering whether those words were uttered in 2012 or time had gone back to 1969.

There's only one aspect on which Renzi would truly be vulnerable, writes Menichini, which is his incapacity of making the party compact, of uniting, making sure that his positions are legitimated by the assembly. He keeps himself away from symbols, from colors that can remind the part of the political page that with a new coat he is candidated to represent. But are we sure that this alleged incapacity, in an elections logic, is a weakness and not a strategic decision which has been carefully studied? Renzi runs alone, confuses the cards and kicks the past without too fine distinctions. Florence's mayor, more than any other party man, has understood that the politics in the immagination of citizens is still closed in the walls of autoreferenciality and that in order to truly make the difference he mustn't point on the age, but on his distance from those environments that today are only seen as places where power is managed. If finalized to the creation of consent, this sort of backwards snobism will probably be profitable.

In this optic we must also contextualize the arrogant, impertinent and dreamy speech; in this design we must look at the retirement threats against D'Alema who, by remaining anachronistically suspended in time, doesn't save him critics that are as ferocious as they are unmotivated. It won't be thanks to this behavior that the country will start growing again, that new jobs will be created, that the problem of esodati will be solved, or the public expenses cut down, but it is surely thanks to this push towards a different politics that they will give hope to those who, more than government members, will have to work to modify this country daily: the citizens.

We can dislike it, but we need to acknowledge it; we live in a moment in which it has become important to give a tangible sign of change rather than demonstraing the strategic capacity in guiding the country. And it's useless that the leaders of the old guard shout to the scandal, if change had been an endogenous process in politics, there would have been no need of creating what is lived by most as a tearing break.

There is no scale of values that the voter will consult before going to vote, as there is no alleged duel between programmatic content and communication capacities; the only ground on which the candidates fight is their vision of the future of this Country. Florence's mayor has dared not to respond to that recall towards minoritarism that has always relegated the left wing on the second arrived step, but with dignitiy, as some would say. Today dignity is not enough anymore. You must convince, set off enthusiasms, and bring passion to the disappointed by imagining new proposals, because new is the world in which we've woken up after years of hybernation. Renzi's methods are perhaps still distasteful to most of the party, but would you be ready to say the same about the majority of voters?

A chi piace?

Small portrait of an alternative: Matteo Renzi at Piazza Pulita

Let's face it. You can like him or not: tone of voice like he's top of the class, a starched shirt and that, now distinctive, accent of a bully. Who likes him? For example those who - and they're many - are convinced that the accent from Tuscany is nice per se, just for how it sounds. Or those who think that, why not: when he proposes changes, maybe he really intends to do them. And he is liked, we have seen it, by the PDL, PD and IDV disappointed... so he's liked a bit by everyone, even those who swear they'll never vote him. Who doesn't like him? Bersani nostalgics, first of all. And he's not liked by those who think that he might actually do it, those who think he's too young, and those who don't have a good relationship with technology: what if he goes to the government, and then the iPhone doesn't work?

Matteo Renzi is the man of the moment. The alternative to Bersani, the young politicians that young people like, the one who wants to change the old directors, daring where others before him haven't: the camper, the primary elections in American style, the balloons. Oh, he doesn't kid. To the point that during last week's Piazza Pulita he spent the first hour showing off his multicolor tail with a certain elegance; he was so comfortable that he doesn't even sit up from the stuffed armchair during advertising breaks, not even to go pee - in net (and studied) contrast with La Russa who takes advantage of every break to insult an evidently amused Formigli. Then, practically out of nowhere, the scenario changes: Renzi gets mad, Telese is surprised, D'Alimonte goes back to sleep and the program freezes, while in the air there is a strange awareness that this is a moment to handle carefully. The rest is history.

Of course, if he reacted so violently it makes it clear that he doesn't really have so much certainty of success with his campaign; in Florence he says "We can make it", but during these days he puts his hands forward and promises to support Bersani in case he's defeated. In the polls Vendola is higher than him, and not by a little. And yet the Ambra Angiolini of politics, although he hadn't had a particularly difficult life (and a growth that has been just as easy), we like him. He convinces, good or bad, and he convinces many. Difficult to demonize him for the right wing votes that he brings: it's just those, infact, that make the difference between victory and defeat. Converted or undecided? Not easy to say. Renzi uses that large part of confused, disappointed and disillusioned that vote where their heart takes them. But also on those - and it's some news - who are children of an Italy adrift, in which the social conditions change inesorably, the balances fail, and who is on the right can find themselves, for choice or need, to share opposite ideals.
