The death of sharing and the gossipy Web
Recently during one of my lessons, I was explaining to my students that "sharing is one of the things we can do that triggers the virality of content, along with the vote (read "like" or "+1") and the comment."
As I was talking I realized, however, that the concept of sharing that I was explaining was purely mechanical and emotional: a couple of clicks, perhaps a line to explain why we like or dislike that content and that's it. It is all very far from what, just a few years a go, made the "philosophy of the Internet".
Giuseppe Granieri, in his Blog generation, explains very well how bloggers were dedicated to finding "interesting content on the web and sharing it with others". A sometimes weary work of research, selection and publication of new knowledge. The web itself, not Arpanet but Internet itself, was born to connect Universities and make knowledge available. The goal was the much advertised "collective intelligence, superior to the simple sum of the ones composing it". In essence, the concept was that reasoning together, putting intelligences together, would have brought to a collective enrichment that was impossible to reach separately.
Coming back to what I was explaining to my students, it appears obvious that it's not like that anymore. We share in the optic of the simple transmission of an information, not very different from the tendency, during friends reunions, of saying "do you know what happened or what Tizio or Caio did"? and to accompany this information only with emotional instinctive expressions: nice ugly, funny, surprising, incredible, and so on. The torsion of the concept of sharing, oeprated by social networks, has taken it much nearer what is commonly called Gossip. More than "Share", the Facebook button should be called "Transmit" or "Whisper".
It's the word of mouth dynamic, someone will answer me. In the end, the web is nothing more than the digital projection of human society and thus replicates its dynamics, whether they be nice or ugly. Here the problem isn't that the phenomenon is ugly or beautiful, right or wrong, it's that it doesn't take us anywhere, and actually only creates more problems, starting for example from the scarce reliability of information travelling on the web. The gossip dynamics doesn't include a verification of the veridicity of information per se, nor any preoccupation in terms of responsibility of the fact that we're actually publishing something.
If we add the times of the Web and the dynamics of people's attention, it appears pretty obvious that, in the end, we react in an instinctive, immediate way, trnsmitting emotions and not "knowledge" and that we tend to avoid complex content. This post itself, for example, will surely be too long for the majority of people who will see it.
But what happened to the good Jon Postel, true founding father of the Internet, who in 1981 formulated the law which carries his name and that describes the social function of the web: "Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others", which means that online it is necessary to be careful, and thus rigorous, respectful, exact and precise regarding what we propose to others. And we must be liberal, which means open to listen and favor and respect the freedom of thought and initiative of others in the act of receiving.
In substance Postel said that the web is a social ecosystem in which the engine is the communication based on exchange, listening, respect of one another, bringing value, interaction. Who enters and communicates online has the responsibility for what they say and does, but also a responsibility towards the others, which is the taslk of interacting, listening, sharing. Sharing in a view of added value, not gossip.
This law is now dead, on a web where billions of contents flow and in which the virality is a tool that is more and more encouraged for commercial reasons, and where even the so called influencers are measured not on the quality of what they say, but on how well they can engage their communities: visibility before everything else.
I read myself and I have the sensation of having written like those nice old people who say "well, when I was young things were quite different". Might be, but I continue to think that this gossipy web, more and more similar to the commercial television is, more than anything, a huge missed opportunity.

60 questions for Beppe Grillo
The M5S has had its primaries, the parliamentaries, to select those who will be the candidates for the next political elections in 2013, but the specific day is still a riddle.
1400 people, activists, for 95.000 votes collected online, far from the more than 3 milion of the CSX, but however worthy of attention and not only because of polls, but because M5S might be a carrier of topics from "below". So this time we've collected the questions for Beppe Grillo, spokesperson of the movement, and the activists who want to answer. The questions are about the internal democracy of the movement, which has been several times treated by mainstream media as well, but also the ways activists will face the topics related to the country agenda: from guaranteed income to economical politics, from ILVA to waste disposal.
Someone asks Grillo and the movement to be more specific and tell what the actions will be to make Italy a contemporary country under every aspect. There's also the web and the electronic democracy, which are dear to Grillo, from the first steps he moved in the field of politics, from the first meetups. So practically the questions are aimed to better understand how a 5 star country would be designed and function.
We thought it was right to give attention to the M5S because it represents a great deal of novelty and rupture with the past of the Italian political scenario, grown in time, but not so young since it's almost 10 years old, and that it does have some elements of similarity with the first Lega, with all the distinctions of the case, of course.
We'd like to understand what the distance is between a popular movement and a populist movement, what will happen when the activists will enter the parliamentary machine, that sort cold bureaucratic machine that seems to kill any willingness to change. So enough jokes and prejudices, we here at Intervistato.com we've never had any, but never as before we are here, waiting.

@intervistato stiamo già facendo @matteorenzi @sednonsatiata @psymonic
— Adesso Partecipo (@AdessoPartecipo) Novembre 12, 2012
— Adesso Partecipo (@AdessoPartecipo) November 16, 2012
— Matteo Renzi (@matteorenzi) November 20, 2012
— Matteo Renzi (@matteorenzi) November 22, 2012
— Matteo Renzi (@matteorenzi) Novembre 23, 2012

Matteo Renzi's (non) answer to our readers' 50 questions
Every once in a while, politics renews itself. It changes faces, perspectives, ideals, and reproposes itself with a clean face that promises radical changes and opening to innovation.
Maybe that is the reason why, at the beginning of November, we engaged our readers in a project that reflected precisely the tendency encountered during these last few months in Italian politics, which is the availability to dialogue with the web and with the citizens that through social media try to get information on the topics that regard them more closely.
We started with Matteo Renzi, who has made a pillar of his campaign of the importance of the web, and who built a great deal of his image of young politicians on social networks.
So, on November the 7th, we published a post on Facebook, inviting everyone to tell us what question they'd like to ask Matteo Renzi in case we had the opportunity to interview him. At the same time, we launched on Twitter the hashtags #intervistatu #Renzi, which readers used in order to send their questions. The participation rate has been incredible: in just a few days about 50 questions on the most diverse topics have arrived, from conflict of interests to the topics of the end of life, from the financial world to the actions against mafia infiltrations and organized crime, a topic that is notoriously ignored in the candidates' programs, Renzi's included.
On November 12th we published a post with a Storify that put together all the material arrived from the users, from tweets to Facebook comments. The post encountered an incredible enthusiasm from readers, who at that point set themselves to wait for Matteo Renzi's answers. In a matter of hours, we received a tweet from the account Adesso Partecipo ("now I participate" n.d.r.), with the request to send the transcription of the questions of the Storify, a request that was then suspended because the staff said they we already working on it.
On the 15th of November we sent the 50 questions via email anyway, and waited further answers, only to receive this tweet: "As you can see, he's very busy now... but we've made a committment."
Awesome. Committments are sacred, so we set ourselves to wait those answers that we thought would arrive in a matter of hours now. A hope that has been deceived in the following days, during which we still continued to sollicitate for an answer.
On November the 20th we received a tweet from Matteo Renzi himself, promising that he would answer our questions "before tomorrow bye".
A tepid consolation that was soon deceived by the silence during the next day, and the next day after that. A few requests for answer later, here's another promise, along with what looks like excuses for the delay: "I'm late, it's true, but I promise to answer before the elections, not later than tomorrow".
Just one day and our readers could finally have, after 10 days of wait, an answer to their questions. But yet again they have been deceived: another request, and today we get this tweet: "I've seen the questions, all the answers are in the program and in the "Truths about Matteo" section of the website."
Well, we can't deny we were a bit puzzled by this non answer. If it really had been this one, then it couldn't have taken 11 days to write, and surely there wouldn't have been any need to promise and delay so many times.
If this was only about reading the text of the program in order to have an answer, everyone who sent a question would have just done it: but if you look closely, many topics are missing, others are only marginally discusssed, and a clear and concrete answer lacks entirely.
On the other hand, it is true that 50 questions are many, but if a politician wants to be the Prime Minister of a country, 50 questions are surely not a problem, especially for someone who presents himself as a careful listener of the Web. We chose not to censor the question of readers, not select them and not change them since the needs and doubts that are expressed there can be those of anyone, and the answers have an impact on the lives of everyone, not only those who sent the questions.
We're not alone, by the way: someone is still waiting for the answers to Greenpeace's 6 questions, for which the length is surely not an alibi. And yet, silence there as well. But a committment is sacred, as we said earlier. Too bad.
Wr hope that Matteo Renzi changes his mind and respects his committment. Or else it would be the first promise he deceives.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Sandro Ruotolo #ijf12
One more interview from the Intervistato Journalism Festival series, directly from Perugia, is with Sandro Ruotolo, famous Italian journalist who is part of the Servizio Pubblico talk show.
He defines himself as a journalist who works in television, rather than a presenter. We asked in which way Servizio Pubblico might evolve, considering its origin. He thinks it has been an extraordinary experience, that has opened the path to the future: multiplatform, the web, satellite and local televisions. It's not possible to go back anymore, especially because everything that has been done happened during a serious economic crisis and an extremely unstable political context, the transition from Berlusconi to the technical government of Monti. [video]
Ruotolo says the they are more than satisfied with the result, they managed not only to have a balanced budget, but they spent a very small part of the money they gathered from the 100.000 people who sent at least 10 euro to be able to see the program. The path has been opened: now it must be developed. [video]
Another question we asked is about Minister Severino's statements about the need to control the web more. Ruotolo thinks the on air experimentation with the web has brought interesting results. The web cannot and must not be controlled: just think about the recent mobilitations that have been organized online, from the Rome cyclists manifestation, to the Montichiari one against vivisection. It's a point of direct democracy and confrontation, which an attempt to control could only damage. [video]
Of course, the Italian laws are to be applied to the web as well, but proper censorship would be a mortal blow to the Article 21 of the Constitution. Many have battled against censorship at the times of the Bulgarian edict, and in case there were new attempts to censor the web, they would undoubtedly return to fight.
I invite you to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis.
Enjoy!

10minuticon Massimo Melica @massimomelica
Buona visione!

10minuticon Massimo Melica
This week we present a new section of Intervistato.com: 10minuteswith, video interviews 10 minutes long with personalities that have distinguished themselves online.
A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Massimo Melica, expert of law applied to the new technologies.
Massimo started dealing with this matter in the early 90s, when it actually didn't exist yet, writing about the use of credit cards and cash mashines.
All the social thematics that bring the people to dialogue and discussion become object of interest for the law, that regulates its pathologies.
The Internet is seen as man's most important cultural challenge: in Massimo's opinion it is necessary to learn to discipline the dialogue through a tool that erases territorial barriers, space-time barriers and most importantly stores everything we say: it is necessary to adopt a more and more responsible and aware use of the Web, more ethical than what it was possible to use years ago. [video]
As for the legislation of new technologies, Massimo says that a part of the existing code can be applied, but it is clearly desirable that we find new paradigms that can effectively favor the use of new technologies. [video]
We asked Massimo how Open Politics was born, the project that puts all the online born politics related initiatives together, with their characteristics of transparency, saving, dispute against the caste. The idea is to be their projectual core, able to take a step back from the Web and to talk to the entire population, which is made both of people who regularly use new technologies, and the people who haven't yet approached this world. [video]
An informed democracy that necessarily starts with proper education and the elevation of the cultural level of the people who are called to express their preference through their vote. [video]
As for the organizational structures of parties, one of the most important aspects is the fact that they were born in a period when there was no Internet, nor the possibility of a direct dialogue with the voters.
The idea of bringing new people in parties seems to be uneffective without real innovation of the structures, getting away from the traditional way of managing the power inside the party and starting to exploit the base to build a transparent political system capable of actually solving problems. [video]
Politics today doesn't talk with the Web, and in Massimo's opinion it is necessary to be very careful not to confuse political marketing with actual politics.
The goal is to make the system meritocratic, to achieve perfectly transparent politics and allowing people who dialogue online to find new solutions in the art of ruling. [video]
We asked Massimo's expert opinion about the DDL wiretappings: in his opinion it is necessary to protect the privacy of third parts and avoid publishing wiretappings that are not relevant to the goals of the trial.
As for Comma 29, the text is very generic at a legal level: it mentions "websites" without specifying whether they mean blogs, registered newspapers or Facebook pages, revealing that the legislator doesn't really know the topics on the table. [video]
We finished asking what are the necessary steps to make open politics possible: in Massimo's opinion we should rely on listening, dialogue and mediation, and think of new politics that are oriented to the common good.
Uniting people with the goal of finding solutions to the greatest problems is possible and we should do it not only to live in a dignified manner, but also for the well being of future generations. [video]
I invite everyone to watch the interview with Massimo, much richer in details and insights than my brief synthesis.
Enjoy!
