Ho provato a farmi trascinare via dall’atmosfera cubana.

Public service: please stop

I'll tell you right away. Last night I fell on the couch and enjoyed Zucchero's concert at La Habana. I didn't want to participate in the media orgy organized by Public Service (never has a name been less appropriate...). I couldn't manage to save myself totally since my Facebook and Twitter profiles exploded with posts, likes, comments and tweets about what was going on at La7.

I tried to let myself carried by the Cuban atmosphere. I even smoked half a cigar, bought last summer near Nacional. Nothing. Cuba is too small and far away to win what I considered our past.

I lost myself reading what was being posted online and felt a terrible discouragement. There was Berlusconi again, with his trials, his billions and his girls. The 80s "cumenda" which, wrongly, I believed wasn't interesting for anyone anymore. There were Santoro and Travaglio again, living icons of the radical chic left wing that thinks it has the truth in its pocket always and anyway, which loses happy, happy to lose. There were the fans, the stadium curves, the insults. There were, again, the same communicative models and the same contents. There was, yet again, the Italy of the last 20 years, which everybody says they want to change, and then keep it as it is. The safety of playing on a familiar field, with certain enemies and allies, is a reassuring sensation that no one wants to give up.

It is not important that they didn't talk about at least one problem. Whether the work, the fiscality, the green economy, the formation, the broadband, the civil rights (just to quote a few examples), remained outside of the La7 studies. The important thing was to let people feel the smell of blood, show that the caiman is still alive, that we're still stuck in 1994. Because politics doesn't make audience. The fights do. Because change, real change, puts all of us in front of our responsibilities. It imposes to choose, to put our faces on the line, to give our contribution. Change changes the world, and thus all of us. And this is why it's scary.

Then maybe it's more reassuring to continue as we always did. Sit in a couch and get angry till passing out, listening happily to today's barker, hoping that a Messia will come save us, aware of the fact that, sooner or later, we'll eliminate him as well. A context in which contestants are actually faithful to eachother, aware of the fact that if the status quo changes, they all go home or worse, they end up being forgotten.

In this context, yesterday night was a success. For La7, which has had 33% of share (8 million viewers), and has earned a whole lot of money in advertising. For Santoro and Travaglio, who have returned importantly under the spotlight. For Berlusconi, who has surely recovered a few votes. For the many fans, who after more than a year of doubts have finally seen their idols on the field.

It went bad, very bad, for Italy, who not only seems incapable of thinking about its own future, but seems happy to live in a perpetual talk show, where the protagonists never change.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Luisella Costamagna #ijf12

For the Intervistato Journalism Festival Series, directly from the Journalism Festival in Perugia, we managed to interview Luisella Costamagna, journalist and conductor of Robinson on Rai3.

The first question was about the end of the collaboration with the program In Onda, which she conducted together with Luca Telese on La7. Costamagna says she doesn't know the reason of the break up, and that she doesn't have any explanation for it, but in the end she doesn't really care and prefers to look forward: the past doesn't matter. [video]

We asked her something about her new program on Rai3, Robinson. She was contacted by Di Bella, and then a team was formed. The program Robinson was born, thanks to the work of the editorial team: it evolves every week, changing its formula which remains always unfinished and developing. [video]

We asked how she thinks to integrate the content generated by users during the show with the show itself: "I consider what they write", but then she adds "it remains a television program, though". On Mondays she does a video chat, while for the integration aspect, she says that sometimes the most interesting observations collected online can then be used as inspiration for the development of a show.

Another point of contact with the web is the integration of Spinoza's satire inside the programe: even though they are born as jokes and content for online use, bringing them inside the show makes them descend in a purely television dimension. [video]

Luisella's media diet includes several information programs, especially on satellite, but also telefilms and American seris. She also reads many newspapers, among which Corriere della Sera, Repubblica, Libero, Il Fatto Quotidiano, Il Giornale, La Stampa and Il Messaggero, just to name a few. As for their frution, only a part of them is read in digital: Luisella remains very fond of the physical aspect of the newspaper, and she loves to cut out the most interesting news and then bring them in the program. [video]

We invite you to view the full interview for more details.

Enjoy!

La situazione all’estero ovviamente è molto diversa. [video]

Vi invitiamo a vedere l'intervista completa!

Intervistato.com | Corrado Formigli #ijf12

For the Intervistato Journalism Festival Series, directly from the Journalism Festival in Perugia, we had the pleasure of interviewing Corrado Formigli, conductor of Piazza Pulita on La7.

The first question was about the influence of journalism and investigative journalism in politics during the past few years. Formigli believes the goal is to be a power watchdog, even though we don't manage to do it so well here in Italy. Most often Italian journalists are more company dogs than watchdogs.

As in all professions, though, there are exceptions. There are some brave journalists, the situation is getting better and there's a whole new generation of journalists with a concept of independence that is very marked.

In Italy, getting a politician to resign isn't an easy task, though: a cheap loan or a cheap house aren't enough to make them go away.

The situation abroad is quite different. There are politicians that for a slightly cheap loan had to resign. [video]

We asked Formigli how he thinks the situation will evolve in the future. Even though they didn't manage to make politicians resign, "we hope we managed to orient and inform the public opinion on a political class that either takes responsibility or has to go home." [video]

Dealing with the issue of a possible integration between TV jurnalism and the online part, including the one regarding the UGC such as tweets or comments sent during the show. Formigli explains the interaction from the public in this direction and that the most computer savvy politicians, journalists and guests in general not only tweet when they're on air, but they also read what user write and orient their answers on the base of what is being said about them and what is happening in that precise moment. [video]

We invite you to view the interview!

The ninth guest of the Intervistato Journalism Festival series, directly from Perugia, was Luca Telese, Italian journalist and conductor of InOnda on La7.

The first question was inevitably about the change of staff of In Onda, on La7. With the arrival of Nicola Porro (vice director of Il Giornale) in the place of Luisella Costamagna, some balances have changed. With Luisella, who was culturally similar to him, the relationship was a constant conflict, while with Porro, who is culturally different from Telese, the relationship tends to a healthy opposition.

Not only the dynamics of the couple of conductors have changed: the format had to change as well. If previously the use of the studio was key, now the most important thing are on site reporters. [video]

We asked about the relationship between media and politics at the moment, with a technical Government leading the country. In Telese's opinion, Monti's government has been surrounded by an aura of religious respect (in spite of some mistakes that haven't been very much covered by media), unlike the Berlusconi or Prodi governments, who had the media against them. [video]

As for the importance of media in politics, Telese thinks that "journalism has build and destroyed politicians carreers". Two examples are that of Renata Polverini, who would never have become president of province without Ballarò, or Debora Serracchiani, who would never have gotten into the European Parlament and so many talk shows without "that blob moment". And again: "information decides the agenda of issues to be tackled". [video]

Another question regarded the relationship between online and paper newspapers, and here he brought the example of Il Fatto Quotidiano, born from a blog and become a paper newspaper, and it's the paper that gives it value: "those 1000 sold copies determine its credibility". [video]

As for Minister Severino's words about blogs, Telese dismisses them as nonsense and a fundamental ignorance, both digital and cultural. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer in details.

10minuticon Luca Di Giovanni

[video]

[video]

[video]

In chiusura Luca ci ha raccontato come è arrivato a far parte del cast di The Show Must Go Off e dove sarà possibile vederlo esibirsi dal vivo. [video]

Invito tutti a visionare l'intervista completa, molto ricca di spunti e riflessioni.

Buona visione!

10 minutes with Luca Di Giovanni

During our interview with Luca Di Giovanni, actor well known as the author of the monologue "Last words", the 5 candles monologue of The Show Must Go Off, we talked about theatre, the Italian cultural scenario and the perspectives for those who want to start this carreer.

We asked Luca how he started working as an actor, and his path was truly interesting. He studied at DAMS as a cinema critic, and that was a very fertile place to be. In 2004 he wrote his first short movie, which he then recorded with some friends and presented to his university fellows, many of which studied movie direction. [video]

Apart from the short films he's also done a lot of theatre, starting in Velletri, his city, which is quite rich in interesting realities that are not very well known. After working with some amateur groups, he moved to Rome, where he got in contact with several environments. Unfortunately his theatre activity is reduced to monologues, for practical rather than ideological reasons: this way there's no need to rent rehearsal rooms or pay other actors. Luca has remained isolated on purpose, since "theatre is a place that gives little but teaches a lot." [video]

The candles monologue was aired during the first episode of The Show Must Go Off, and it is a severe analysis of a situation that has just got worse during these last few years. Who starts today doesn't know what direction to take, unlike people who started in other times. The theatre has become a conquest land with nothing to conquer, even though it's quite cheap to do: the true problem is the lack of role models, also made worse by the incontrollable proliferation of low quality schools.

The theatres become "holes without a public", and those who manage them are only interested in making money from rent: the actors have to bring their own public, which is too often made out of friends and family. There are also very talented actors in Italy, though, and The Show Must Go Off is proof that there's still someone who's looking for good actors, even though not famous. [video]

We asked Luca what advice he'd give to young people who would like to be actors, and in his opinion the most important thing is not thinking right away about where you want to get, not looking at other people's results, but just take time to have fun and experiment and know people in the field. It's important not to mistake the goal with the path, which is the main reason his most valuable advice is not to think about "making it". [video]

Finally Luca has told us how he become part of the cast of The Show Must Go Off and where it will be possible to see him perform live. [video]

I invite everyone to view the full interview, extremely rich in details and insights.

Enjoy!

Maria Petrescu
