Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Gini Dietrich

Some time ago we interviewed Gini Dietrich, founder of Arment Dietrich, a marketing and communication agency that operates in the fields of heavy industry, manufacturers, financial services and healthcare. We talked about the difficulties in taking these companies online, and the challenges that ensue.

First of all we asked Gini how Arment Dietrich was born: in the early 2000 she worked for another film, and she had no intention to open an independent agency. However, after a few years she decided to found Arment Dietrich, and her first client was the same person that had suggested her to do this step in the first place. Although she was initially alone, basically a freelance, during the following years the company kept growing, and now has 13 employees.

Arment Dietrich is thus currently a marketing and communication agency: until 2008 it was a PR agency, so it dealt with media relations, events and crisis management. Today they also integrate marketing (email marketing, content, search engine optimization and so on). They only work B2B, with companies that operate in the manufactury, financial services and healthcare fields, curating the social media aspect as well, with several clients that operate in the field of heavy industry, where purchases (often of milionary value) never happen online.

People think that in order to have an online presence it's compulsory to have a Facebook and Twitter account, but in the case of AD the majority of their clients' customers isn't present on these social networks. So they try to reach prospects and consumers where they are already hanging out, which may be on Google+ or Pinterest in the case of clients who have something visual to show. They build an overall strategy that takes into account the already existent communities, and don't necessarily advise a Facebook presence.

Gini believes hashtags on Twitter are a great tool to research and get smart about several topics: first of all when you are doing research on a new market, or a new client, to see what's being said online regarding that niche or that particular company. She also uses them to find inspiration on PR and social media topics to blog about.

The Arment Dietrich blog was born a few years ago, when the phenomenon had not yet reached the size it has today. They didn't really know what they were doing, but it was a great step in understanding what it was and how it worked. All the matters about SEO, for example, were just at the beginning, and they didn't even talk about content curation yet. From this point of view AD always recommends its clients things that they have already tried out and experimented on: there are a lot of new tools coming out every day, and technology is advancing at such a pace that testing becomes a must.

There has been an important increase in the number of apps present on the market, which is why we asked Gini what is the determining factor of their success or failure. She believes it's the ability to cause addiction from a networking point of view. Google+ hasn't reached that level of addiction that Twitter and Pinterest have, that brings the user to feel the need to get on there every day.

Another question we asked Gini is about company blogs and content curation: there are many tools to aggregate and tell stories on several topics, but can they really substitute blogs? She believes not: having a company blog means having the possibility to tell your own opinion and give your expertise to clients or prospects. If you only do content curation, you won't be able to give your perspective and your opinions about the topics you talk about, losing the credibility of the expert on the matter.

Finally we asked how important it is for a company to be present on platforms such as Yelp and Foursquare, or Reddit, and what the best way to manage criticism on these channels is. Gini believes it's absolutely fundamental to be there, especially if you have a retail company: people are having conversations about you, and you need to be there to answer. There will always be criticism online, it's normal because it's part of human nature. What matters is how you answer. Arment Dietrich always advises its clients to respond publicly on the same platform where the criticism has been published, so people can see that they're listening and that they care.

And then take it offline. You don't want to start a debate with someone who is being critical about you online, so you need to establish a contact. Email, phone call or even an in person meeting, everything it takes to solve the issue.

Of course I invite everyone to view the full interview, much longer and detailed than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!
