Io me li ricordo bene.

The Seppuku of Twitter

So the primaries are over, the ones of the left wing at least, because here there's a mess that could bring us not to a permanent elections campaign, but to a permanent election!

You all know how it ended, Bersani has won in the realities, at the voting stations, while Renzi won on Twitter and on social media. The great victim is Twitter itself, forced to seppuku, the Japanese ritual suicide. There  were also the kaishakunin, the faithful companions who cut its head in a generous fashion, to spare the pain of the blade cutting the intestines and the death by bleeding out. The faithful companions have been the TV and the print, especially the online one, who seriously has some deep responsibilities in this farce. Because that's what it is.

Social media didn't change a vote, or they changed them in the opposite direction, given the great Renzi socialmedia offensive during the week of the ballott, there have been flows of return in favor of the secretary of PD and Ilvo Diamanti, on the pages of Repubblica, has explained that even if all the 100.000 requests for sign-up had been approved, and if they had all, and I mean all, voted for Renzi, the result wouldn't have changed. Already during the past months we've seen the scarce efficiency that the social media system has in helping sales, go figure after this political marketing fail. As I wrote on a post on Orson, I say that we need to go back to action, counseling simil-alien abductions, as Samorì did and the duo Baccini-Galati.

They say Italy isn't ready, that in the end there is no critical mass and other amenities. Nice discovery! How many Twitter users are there? Many less than Facebook, and they are used in very different ways, but I believe we're talking about one or two milion people, leaving ample segments uncovered by age, profession, consume habits and many other segments of micro-data and not big-data. Do you really think that bloggers at the Motor Show will influence purchases? Or that people will continue buying Quattroruote or seeing their friends' cars? I've worked in an agency of analysis and marketing in the Automotive field and what mattered was the print and sector TV shows, not even satellite, because who pays wants to see premium content such as movies, tv series and sports. So now what? Social media have a reinforcement effect, information and interest - here is where the whole concept of engagement stands. I'll leave aside the delicate matter of the Arab Spring and the sad epilogue that it is living, and I remember the "It's the force of the web", "The web brings democracy", "The web is peace". I remember them very well.

Politici CATTOLICI in Italia.

The immobile elegance of the Leopard

Very mobile times, the ones we're living, full of events, announcements of news. But we're in Italy. Is something really stirring?

During these last few weeks we hadn't had any peace, we citizens/voters/readers. We've been spectators of sensational discoveries, such as the fact that in the regional council of Lazio there were people who filled themselves with oysters. Obviously, they were all surprised: Polverini, Casini, Alfano, Napolitano.

Polverini resigns, hundreds of fingers that point at the governess' resignment and Formigoni who watches all these fingers, maybe in search of some ring to kiss, as is customary in Lombardy.

Storace, who being on the right wing, but of that right that, in order not to risk, tweets with the left hand tied behind their back (and maybe with only half a brain), in the Rome fashion sentences right away, with pride and imperial indignation:

Volitional proclaim to which we readily respond: it's obvious that the oysters were off, if the Region of Lazio has melted and shit itself.

However for the first time in recent times we see some resignments, word of an antique assiro-babilonian dialect of which we had lost trace in the last 20, 25 years. There are stories of regional counselors, not only in Lazio, who asked: "These resignment letters, can I get them paid for?"

So great indignation, cleaning proclaims at high levels, Santanché who shouts in television against Fiorito/Batman (whose lawyer Taormina is trying to compose a creative dossier - as usual - against the Joker), Napolitano that as usual after everything has been done says: "The parties must do something about this."

In the center-right wing everyone asked themselves what happened, but the explanation appears to be simple: Berlusconi fell asleep with the remote control in his hand and the finger slipeed on the button that interrupted the break, so Alfano reactivated himself.

They've already sent Verdini to reprogram Angelino, before he starts behaving like the computer from 2001 A Space Odyssey.

But let's see the center-left wing.
Great movements on this front as well.

Renzi goes around in camper in half of Italy and seems to excite everyone (especially in the center - right wing), surrounded by professionals of communication that are much better than those of the opponents (which means he's already won, let's face it). Bersani and everyone in the PD who continue to throw tear gas so nobody will understand exactly what's going on.

Are these the primaries of PD?
Are they of the coalition?
Which, coalition?

Is Vendola participating or not? Can he even participate?

Even Scalfarotto (yes, Scalfarotto) supports Renzi, he who used to be a scout and has a company (family run) which has the same name of the crow in the Jungle Book, a crow who is very important in the lupetto tradition and for whom the motto is "We're the same blood, you and me".

Rutelli gets some courage and puts in Tabacci as well, in these primaries of the center-center-center- (left).

Big news, this Renzi guy.
On the other side, in a interview for Il Foglio in 2010, Renzi said:

"This is why I love it when the Pope says we need a new generation of Catholics in politics. Anyone who does this job knows it: it would be a revolution."

See what counter-counter-counter-counter-counter-counter-counter reactionary ideas?
Catholic politicians in Italy.
I wonder why nobody had thought about it before.

Amen to Revolucion, para siempre, because there are many rings to kiss, not only in Lombardy apparently.

Oh, the revolution, yes. There's also the anti-politics one. Which is clashing against the fact that anti-politics doesn't exist. It cannot exist. That in the moment in which you are elected, you must do it, the politics. And you must also make some decisions. And also accept the fact that there are people who don't agree with you.

Anti politics doesn't protect anyone, deal with it. It's better that you learn fast how to do it, the politics, friends of the M5S, because there is no such thing as a gentle revolution.
There is no such thing in countries that are more gentle than ours, go figure.

And let's close with the great news in the world of information.

This is the week of the launch of the Huffington Post in Italy. The worst thing is that now, even if I write huffingtonpostdotcom, the Italian version comes up, and to go to the English version I need to choose the language from the menu.

First great scoop: an interview with Berlusconi. A nice interview in which the meanest question is:

What would you have done differently, had you been in the Government?

Question to which Berlusconi answers starting with:

First of all I wouldn't have raised the fiscal pressure. [...]

Really unexpected.
I'll need a barrel of Coramine, to keep all these emotions at stake.

So, if during the times of the Leopard it was necessary to "change everything so that nothing changes", now everything is more dynamic, faster, more rapid: we need to move everything so that nothing moves.

D’altronde siamo in campagna elettorale.

The spread of jibberish and the launch of the Italian Huffington Post

The Italian version of the Huffington Post is now here, we probably noticed it thanks to the flood of comments that greeted its almost "divine" arrival.

The post that I found the richest and most complete on the topic is by Pier Luca Santoro, the Giornalaio, that in "The Revolution isn't Annunziata" makes a great analysis, especially on the fact of doing business for revenue using non retributed work. Here a long reflection should be done on the concept of intellectual work, from Biancardi to Abruzzese, that now is worth less than a gadget - a written post is cheaper than a brand pin. The question isn't whether it is right or wrong to write for free, that can be a personal choice, but it should be: is it right not to pay for labor? Then, looking at the current blogger team of the Huffington Post, I feel like I'm among the veterans of television talk-shows.

A matter that invests many interests, from work to post-school formation, and that especially should make us think about the destiny of the Italian cultural industry, that appears very bleak to those who work with it. We fill our mouths with the concept of visibility, monster-word, that can mean everything and nothing, because in roder to be visible you don't have to be different, acute and good at your job, what really matters is getting noticed. So the first criterium isn't quality anymore, it's something else.

Another matter that some only treat in a hurry is the matter of the media specifics. I don't remember any good newspaper director that has also been a good TVnews director, for example. Every medium has its own language and codes, although we can say that journalism has a few main universal principles. But languages are important, and in my opinion they remain the true promoters of change, the barriers you need to tackle if you want to innovate. So why Annunziata? You don't become "digital" by opening a Twitter account, because what really matters is the editorial strategy, and here even the way the whole thing is put together makes it look extremely similar to the Fatto Quotidiano online.

Or this isn't an editorial project, this is a political operation that aims to create a conflict with its informative adversary, that I named earlier, because the matter is getting harsher and harsher. But after all, it's the elections campaign.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Vittorio Zambardino

Some time ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Vittorio Zambardino, Italian journalist known as the creator of Repubblica.it in 1997, the newspaper that started online journalism in Italy.

First of all we tackled the matter of the lack of moderation and curation on Kataweb: Vittorio has highlighted the great problem of hidden costs when we talk about Internet operations inside companies. It is only partially true that the service is "free", because the moment it becomes necessary to hire someone to analyze thousands of blogs, you also need to pay that person. The same thing if you choose an automated system, because technology has costs as well (just think about maintenance costs). [video]

Another question we asked was about the ability of companies like Facebook, Google and Apple to still be bearers of innovation. The risk is that they become breaks to competition and the development of planetary creativity. Vittorio believes no company, 10 years after it was founded, is still creative and innovative. As for the aforementioned companies, he thinks they have finished their creativity a long time ago, if they ever had any. Facebook has never been creative: as a project that overlaps the web that functions by closing the user in a huge walled garde, Facebook has nothing innovative to it, and it has nothing to do with the real web. [video]

We asked Vittorio if he believes the Huffington Post business model could work in Italy, and what the best way to treat with bloggers would be, in order to avoid the problems that happened in the US. He believes that it would be interesting to see what we can do, but that an important detail must be specified: when people have started talking about the model in Italy, everyone was extremely enthusiastic about it. When the truth emerged, though, that is the fact that it is a model that pays the work of people in cents, very few have talked about it. In particular, a few newspapers that had an editorial interest in bashing the Huffington Post have written about it. [video]

Another topic we talked about was the hyperlocal journalism: Vittorio called it a "sexy idea", one of those ideas that sound great but when put into practice don't really give satisfactory results. The only case in which it works isn't editorial, but advertising, in particular the geolocalized advertising in Google. One of the reasons why there is this great gap could be the territorial scale: in the USA the "local" is a true, consistent field, that still counts about 12.000 local newspapers, while in Italy and Europe the numbers are considerably smaller. [video]

We asked which figure is lacking today among digital editorial staff, but Vittorio thinks that there is no such thing yet. He believes there are skills and knowledge that will be put together to create something new: someone who writes code, for example, might have the goal of visually representing the Italian public debt. He also mentioned Linkiesta's infographics, but they are static, they don't respons, they don't have a database to interact with, as the ones the Guardian makes.

We talked about data journalism, the difficulty in collaborating with the important figures of Italian innovation, how companies work and what the biggest obstacles in the path of development truly are. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, very rich in insights and details!

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Diana Letizia #ijf12

The fifth interview at the International Journalism Festival is with Diana Letizia, journalist for the newspaper Secolo XIX.

Diana Letizia has recently drawn a lot of attention from the web thanks to an experiment, as she calls it, even though many have archived it under the name "provocation".

Quite a while ago the arrival of the Huffington Post in Italy has been made public, and the whole project has been made possible by a deal with the Espresso group. Diana has decided, out of curiosity, to go check whether the domain ariannahuffington.it was free, a little branding experiment, as she called it. Incredibly the domain that has the name of the founder of the Huffington Post was free.

Diana decided to buy it, starting her experiment. In her opinion a big editorial project must take into account marketing and branding, even in the slightest details. At this point the reasons can only be two: a terrible mistake or a complete lack of the intention of doing it. As for official answers, she hasn't received any yet. [video]

We also asked her whether she would accept to write for the Huffington Post, considering its business model. She would try, just to understand not how things have gone, but how things will go here in Italy and to understand which will the payment model be, especially for bloggers. [video]

Regarding payment for those who write online, Diana has told us that "payment should be in line with the quality of the produced content. In Italy we are still in MiddleEarth, a place where it's not clear how to quantify the value of the content. But in any case, it can't be 5 euro with taxes". [video]

We also asked a question about the Order of Journalists. As many before her, Diana thinks that a reform is necessary, but also a higher understanding of the complex world of online journalism. [video]

As for Minister Severino's statements about the web, which have been released during a speech at the IJF, Diana defines them "dark words". [video]

I invite you to view the interview, much richer in details.

Enjoy!
