The Sallusti case: the weights and measures of information

The director of Il Giornale has been condemned to 14 months in jail, with suspended sentence, for "omitted control". By reading the reactions it would seem this is the first case, in recent times, but...

On July the 9th 2010 the Campania journalist Gianluigi Guarino, ex director of the Corriere of Caserta, was arrested. For the same crime that Sallusti is being accused of, omitted control, on behalf of a responsible director, of one or more diffamatory articles published on the newspaper they directed. Guarino has been in jail for a total of 43 days, out for a recalculation on the pardon he had rights on, and after being condemned to a little more than one year in jail.

There have been 43 days during which Guarino has been the only journalist in Europe who was in jail for the crime that today is making so much scandal around the fiancee of the Member of Parliament Daniela Santanchè.

Reactions of indignation also from the historical "enemies" of Sallusti and his editorial line, and of course of his employer. All novel Voltaires, they make themselves look good by showing solidarity beyond opinions, to their hated colleague.

Even the Quirinale has declared, before the verdict, that they were "observing the matter with interest" (which we are sure is something that doesn't put any kind of pressure on the judges), the same Quirinale where rumors say that Napolitano would have been ready to sign his grace in case he was condemned. Solidarity.

Solidarity that Guarino has received from the UdC of Benevento, in those times, from other sannite newspapers and from Assostampa, which in the official communication even managed to get the name of the newspaper directed by Guarino at the time wrong.

And that's it.

This is to say that Sallusti as well should go to jail? Absolutely not. The law on publications of 1948 is incredibly injust and should be changed. Probably now that a wealthy person is touched, something will move.

But the matter proves that even the "best" journalists don't consider the measure of a man as an universal parameter: a Sallusti who risks going to jail is worth more than a Guarino who is already in.
