Gennariello (studente di scuola media superiore): Come va, Pasquale?
Pasquale: Bene, Gennariello: osservando, leggendo, scrivendo.Gennariello: Bene? Questa crisi è sempre più grave, la disoccupazione cresce, e tutto questo ti fa stare bene?
Pasquale: Tutto questo, Gennariello, mi addolora, come cittadino del mondo. Ma sono in pace con me stesso: per vocazione e professione faccio lo scienziato sociale, e questa crisi l’ho prevista da 40 anni a questa parte. Non da solo: con Luis Razeto – abbiamo scritto saggi, comunicazioni a convegni, libri. Niente. Gli scienziati sociali, gli accademici, i giornalisti, i politici, non ci hanno dato retta.
Gennariello: Come mai?
Pasquale: Per pigrizia, per difesa del prestigio accumulato pensando e dicendo altre cose, per
disperazione.
Gennariello: E dimmi: secondo voi è possibile superare questa crisi?
Pasquale: Sì.
Gennariello: E cosa serve?
Pasquale: Prima di tutto serve capire la natura, la profondità, di questa crisi. Ricordi? L’altra volta ti avevo detto che è una crisi di civiltà. E tu, rispondendo a una mia domanda, hai detto che lo sai come si superano le crisi di civiltà: costruendo nuove civiltà – come la crisi della civiltà greca e romana è stata superata con la costruzione della civiltà medievale, e la crisi della civiltà medievale è stata superata con la costruzione della civiltà moderna.
Gennariello: È vero! Ho detto, ricordando ciò che ci ha insegnato il professore di storia, che la crisi della civiltà medievale è stata superata “con le scienze, la scienza politica di Machiavelli, e le arti, l’architettura di Brunelleschi, la scultura di Michelangelo, e nuovi modi di coltivare la terra, di organizzare i commerci, di navigare i mari…”
Pasquale: Ecco. Anche oggi bisogna costruire nuove pratiche, nuove arti, nuove scienze: una nuova scienza politica, per esempio.
Gennariello: E chi lo deve fare?
Pasquale: Gli scienziati creativi. Come Machiavelli, che era uno scienziato della politica creativo.
Gennariello: E oggi, c’è qualcuno che lo sta facendo?
Pasquale: Certo. Ce ne sono. Non sono tanti, ma ce ne sono. Anche io e Luis Razeto apparteniamo alla banda dei creativi.
Gennariello: E fammi un esempio di cosa avete costruito in questi ultimi anni, come scienziati della politica.
Pasquale: Continuando le nostre ricerche, cominciate quando tu non eri ancora nato, nel 1975 – pensa – negli ultimi due anni abbiamo scritto LA VITA NUOVA. Un corso di Scienza della Storia e della Politica.

Is there a solution for this crisis?
Gennariello (highschool student): How's it going, Pasquale?
Pasquale: Well, thank you: observing, reading, writing.
Gennariello: Well? The crisis is getting worse by the day, unemployment is rising, and all of this makes you feel well?
Pasquale: All of this, Gennariello, pains me as a citizen of the world. But I'm at peace with myself: as a vocation and profession I am a social scientist, and I had foreseen this crisis 40 years ago. And there's more: together with Luis Razeto - we've written papers, communications at conferences, books. Nothing. Social scientists, academics, journalists, politicians, didn't believe us.
Gennariello: How come?
Pasquale: Laziness, the need to defend the prestige they accumulated by thinking and saying otherwise, despair.
Gennariello: And tell me, is it possible to get over this crisis?
Pasquale: Yes.
Gennariello: And what do we need?
Pasquale: First of all we need to understand the nature, the depth, of this crisis. Do you remember? The last time we met I told you that this is a civilization crisis. And you, by answering to one of my questions, said that you know how to overcome a civilization crisis: by building new civilization - just like the crisis of the Greek an Roman civilization was overcome by building the Medieval civilization, and the Medieval civilization crisis was overcome by building the modern civilization.
Gennariello: True! I said, remembering what our history teacher taught us, that the crisis of the Medieval civilization was overcome "with the sciences, the political science of Machiavelli, and the arts, Brunelleschi's architecture, Michelangelo's sculpture, and new ways to cultivate, to organize commerce, to navigate seas..."
Pasquale: Exactly. Today we need to build new practices, new arts, new sciences once again: a new political science, for example.
Gennariello: And who is supposed to do that?
Pasquale: Creative scientists. Just like Machiavelli, who was a creative politics scientist himself.
Gennariello: And today, is there someone who's doing it?
Pasquale: Of course. There are several people. Not many, to be honest. Even I and Luis Razeto belong to the creatives group.
Gennariello: Then give me an example of something you built during these last few years, as politics scientists.
Pasquale: By continuing our research, started when you weren't even born, in 1975 - during the last two years we've written THE NEW LIFE. A course of Sciences of History and Politics.
