Diventano sindaci, nominati ancora dagli alleati i Vizzini a Villalba e Lucio Tasca a Palermo.

Stories of dishonor: a short story of the mafia and its origins

"The rich use the Mafia in order to save from the plague of brigandage their own person and their properties. They use it in order to maintain that powerful influence and prevail."
Giacchino Rasponi - Prefect of Palermo 1874

From 1861 the mafia goes along with the history of the unified Italy. A criminal story 150 years long, which has now become an extremely difficult to remove cancer. Don't trust those who say that "before XXXX we'll defeat the mafia", because it won't be true.

The same promise was made by Benito Mussolini when he sent to Palermo in 1924 the iron prefect Cesare Mori, who - disconsolate - after a 300 arrests operation confessed to one of his collaborators: "They don't understand that brigandage and mafia are two different things. We've struck the first, who without a doubt represent the most evident aspect of Sicily criminality, but not the most dangerous. We'll be able to give a fatal blow to the mafia when we'll be allowed to search not only among the prickly pears, but in the corridors of prefectures, police, great palaces and, why not, even some ministeries."

Mori, who has indeed an iron prefect, but an opponent fascist squads, was discharged by Mussolini himself in 1929, starting the propaganda according to which fascism had eradicated mafia from Sicily. Completely false, and so during the first half of the 40s we see the hug between mafia, economy and politics, starting with Salvatore Giuliano, alias "Turiddu", until our days.

Those are the years during which the future bosses arrive on the scene, among which "the red primula of Corleone", that same Luciano Leggio who will be then arrested in Milan in 19974. It's with the landing of the Allies in Sicily (July 1943) that the mafia, the one that matters, made of land owners and prelates makes agreements with power, and is put in charge of cities and institutions. The separatist movements are sedated with the charges distributed by the Allies in an anticomunist key: they become mayors, nominated by the Allies, Vizzini at Villalba and Lucio Tasca in Palermo.

The OSS, the American secret services use the structures of mafia power in order to put the bases of liberated Sicily. Between 1943 and 1947, beyond the bases of liberated Sicily, the ground for a State that meets the Antistate are posed as well. After the arrival of the Allies, a grey area starts to emerge, made of reserved news, weapons and privileges: an example among all, the possibility which Michele Navarra was given to collect the cars not used by the Allies anymore and fund the first Sicilian transportation company, or the charge given to Vincenzo di Carlo, first vicecommander of the Littorio Youth, and then supervisor on behalf of the Civil Affairs of the Allies to the requisition of wheat and other cereal. Raffadali, city of di Carlo, as Alfio Caruso remembers in "From one thing comes another", becomes the most active center of the black market.

After the second world war, in the United States a strong interest spikes towards the families of Corleone. Salvatore Lucania, alias Lucky Luciano, is sentenced to life in New York in 1942 by attorney Dewey, but he obtains impunity and comes back to Italy thanks to the information given during the war to the Allies, so the feud between the Grecos of Ciaculli and the Giardini Croceverde for the territory control begins.

We're in 1947, and on the 1st of May the Portella della Ginestra massacre takes place on orders of Giuliano: 11 dead and 56 wounded. It's the first of those which will be called "State massacres", and waiting were still the 50s, the years of the reconstructions, of the construction sites mafia, the smuggled cigarettes and the first cocaine refineries. A story that goes on, just as it had appeared in '900 between the shores of Sicily and of the United States of America.

Who rules is always right

The statement that Italians are turncoats is, in my opinion, a legend. Based on the idea that they base their choices and their support on argumentations that are more or less vast and articulate, rapidly forgotten and forsaken. I think that reality is different.

Italians tend to support who has the power in that particular moment, but this is a contained predisposition, bond to a substantial matter: the Love for Powerful People. The Powerful is something more, something different than who is simply ruling in that particular historical moment. Weak governments have existed in the past, and exist now, driven from the outside, that can only have a minor effect on those who dream of something else.

Hence the enthusiasm for characters such as Mussolini and Berlusconi. Those are powerful poeople, not simple Prime Ministers. These are the ones who are (or were) loved by the crowds. But only until they proved all their political, decisional and economical force. on July 26th 1943 fascists in Italy had disappeared, but not because Italians had given up the supposed fascist ideals, but because in that moment Mussolini didn't represent the prerogatives that the population appreciated so much anymore. Then an illusory moment of glory with the Republic of Salò, motivated by a Mussolini, pale reflexion of the German power.

And the same thing is valid for Berlusconi. After 1996 the majority of Italians was still with him, although electorally defeated for strategic reasons, not power reasons. But today his vigor has diminished: one year ago, he resigned almost spontaneously! The maximum sign of weakness! But it wasn't Italians that betrayed him, it was him that wasn't himself anymore, his arrogant, powerful self that was so venerated. Then the lowest point was reached in recent times: he didn't manage to avoid a conviction. Italians didn't love him because he was presumably innocent, they loved him because he was impossible to condemn! Not being able to get an absolution, or to avoid the trial entirely, that is a betrayal: his towards those who trusted him blindly!

Another thing are nostalgics, whose political weight isn't very relevant.
And don't think that they do particular political distinctions: Italians would love indifferently Mussolini, Berlusconi, Hitler and Stalin. The powerful aren't from the left or the right, they're just powerful.

So they're from the right.

Oppure no.

Finirà, come tutti i fenomeni umani.

Intanto, attenti dove mettete i piedi.

Berlusconi condemned and the Italian jam

The news is important: the ex Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, Honorable Silvio Berlusconi, has been condemned for fraud in the trial related to the Mediaset TV rights, to 4 years in prison and the interdiction from public offices for 5 years. Or not.

Again in the field, against the danger of "judiciary democracy", against the power of judges. He's not done. The berlusconism, which is that system of behaviors, almost ideological, that has characterized the last twenty years of this country, is still alive. It is making a show of its best performance: screaming for negotiation, the on on justice, we've known it for twenty years now. It will end, as all human phenomena.

Twenty years, this word in our history returns, heavy, the one that has seen the decline of our country in many fields and levels, everyone who have had contacts abroad during these years know it. This para-ideology was already present in smaller doses in the country, I'd say homeopathic doses, but with the return on the field, that describes Berlusconi as the speech on bivouac describes Mussolini, the comparison isn't on the political beliefs of characters of this type. And yet they both have common traits, as the importance given to communication, the first with the building of Cincittà and the foundation of RAI, the second with the introduction of private tv in Italian television.

They've made a cult of their own person and personality, the first by proclaiming himself Duce of Fascism, the second arriving to call himself the Chosen by the Lord, but maybe it was one of his many, famous jokes and puns. The first showed his physical strength, as in the battle of the wheat, the second by showing the power of his wealth.

I'm not saying that Berlusconi is fascist, although I cannot list him among the honest democrats, yet he hasn't brought a political vision, but a way of life, not refounding the State, but refounding the material and cultural habits. The disdain towards culture, a strong laissez-faire in the morality of public behavior, which also feed the impatiente toward democratic and formative institutions.

If before we were a country with cracks and ruins, now we're jam and it's hard to get out of the swamp. It's become disgusting, and yet someone, and more than one, is still attracted by its sweet aroma, even though the fruit is scarse and there's no sign of sugar! I'm not interested in seeing Berlusconi in jail, I don't have these kinds of desires, I'm happy to just know he's at home, anywherethat is, without forgetting about him. At this point we need to get the mud and take it away, we need hard work and no illusions or easy solutions. We can make it. But, I wonder, do we want to?

In the meanwhile, watch your step.

The non sense of Beppe Grillo's swim across the Strait

A few days ago, while surfing a renown platform for participative journalism, I read a not very original post that criticised the swim across the Strait of Messina done by Grillo, defining it a farce. Till here nothing special, or better: more than normal. It's understandable (tomfoolery probably sounded better, though). My eyes fell on a comment for the author of the article, that sounded more or less like this: "If you really want to talk about farces, I suggest you start dealing with Formigoni and Maroni and the regional Council in Lombardia. They managed to say everything and the opposite in order to do nothing. Grillo is a distinguished statesman in comparison."

Well yes: I found, as it may have happened to many of you at least once, an unfortunately not so rare specimen of Grillo fan. I admit, I asked for it. And if you take a walk around the great womb of mother Web that unites us all it is easy to find them, even when you stumble upon the word Grillo by accident, and when that happens the probabilities of a close range encounter grow exponentially and come close to 100%.

Let's face reality: what really is making life easier for M5S isn't a generalized mobilitation technique, but the deaf moral and political collapse which we are witnessing tired and powerless. And if it is not a justification of what's happening, it's at least a way to understand that basing the support on the comparison with others is a bit too simple. You don't need a great expert to evaluate a jump in a sea as way less shameful than the scandals of the Regions of Lazio and Lombardia. Dear Grillo boy, you'd be amazed, but we actually understood that on our own. Apart from the questionable taste of such an initiative, the question we should be asking ourselves is quite obvious. An exhibition of physical strength with the aim of obtaining an electoral consent, even though moral and why not, harmless: pretty, ugly, nice, choose the word you like... was it really necessary? Swimming across the Strait of Messina and being received in Sicily as if it was Pellegrini after her 100m freestyle: was it truly necessary? If it is true that everything is legitimate, but not everything is useful, the question isn't how, isn't how much (the costs of the operation have been cleared) but is, more simply, why? The sense is all there, in the utility. That is obviously missing.

If then you wanted to go more deeply, the result is even worse. During these last few days we saw the viral diffusion of the comparison of Grillo with the figures of several dictators, that just like him have used swimming for propaganda, first of all Mussolini. And by the way, his are the words for an ante-litteram movement of the people for the people: "The masses are nothing but a flock of sheep for me, until they're not organized. I'm not against them. I only deny they can govern themselves." Strange coincidences or worrying similarities? We don't want to alarm anyone, really. But even if the utopia of an equally contributive political participation is filled with good intentions, the reality is quite different. In no social system "one equals one", even in a group of friends there's a hierarchy: in spite of the nice words a leader is necessary. Especially to guide, just as with a flock of sheep, a population of internauts that is clearly and dangerously not prepared for what the aim of M5S is: a web o citizens who are free to act.
