Buona visione!

StartupID | Roberto Esposito of Derev

The 24th interview for StartupID is with Roberto Esposito of DeRev.

First of all we asked Roberto what DeRev is and how the idea was born: the name comes from the Latin "de revolutione", and means "about the revolution". The project itself was born from a bit of thinking Roberto has done during these last few years. After analyzing the evolution of the Internet during the last two decades, he arrived to the conclusion that the Internet is the ideal tool to give power to people's ideas and transform them into something real thanks to the web. [video]

DeRev was born with this purpose, giving power to the most interesting ideas and transforming them into revolutions and projects thanks to a series of tools available for those who had the idea. The aim is to give a strong contribution to realizing the project thanks to various types of tools, based on the category and type of project: from crowdfunding to signatures, arriving to the support for elections campaigns. [video]

It is a platform that offers these tools for free to projects that range from arts to activism, arriving to partecipative democracy: DeRev can be used to guarantee transparency and interact with citizens, gather proposals and opinions on different topics. [video]

It is also quite easy to use: the user must choose whether he wants to open a new project or participate in an already existing one. Once the new project is opened , you can choose in which category to put it, and choose the most useful services based on the goal you want to reach. [video]

The platform offers a vast assortment of additional services, from those linked to discussion, such as forums, until the services for audio video streaming. It is possible to organize public debates with an audience that interacts and comments, or private meetings, with just a few people, based on your own needs. [video]

DeRev is not actually a social network, and it doesn't collide with other already existing social networks: on the contrary, it uses them to guarantee a better visibility to projects. It is possible to incorporate your Facebook and Twitter account in each project, so that information can be spread on your social webs more easily. Moreover, it is possible to export widgets and use them on your website or Facebook page in order to promote your idea. [video]

The numbers are quite interesting: in only 4 months they have managed to gather 50.000 pre-signups on the landing page, 90% of which are Italian. They have also received an investment of 1.250.000 euro as an investement in the startup from a fund. [video]

The business model is quite diversified: on the one side there's a small commission on each donation users make, but there are also other forms, based on advertising. The basic service, however, will always be free for all users. [video]

We asked what the perspectives for the future are: they hope they will manage to reach 100.000 pre-signups at the launch of the platform, and grow strongly in Italy during the next few months. The aim would be to arrive in the spring with a good number of active users, so that they can exit the Italian borders and conquer other markets. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

[video]

Vi invito naturalmente a visionare l'intervista integrale, molto più ricca rispetto a questa mia breve sintesi.

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Giovanni Scrofani

Some time ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Giovanni Scrofani, founder of Gilda35 and great expert of the history of Internet and hacker communities.

First of all we asked what Gilda35 is: it's an online community, a group of people who have a common interest for topics related to creative approaches in the field of social networks.

The project was born in 201, when one of Giovanni's tweets happened to end up in Twitter's home page. Naturally this made him very curious, so he decided to do some reverse engineering on the algorythm, and do some distributed attempts together with other 35 friends. It's from this episode that the name was born: "gild" is a term that comes from roleplaying, the 90s nerd language, as Giovanni calls it. They discovered how to dominate the top tweet algorythm, and managed to put in home page whatever content they wanted. This made them realize the evolutive goals on the world of social networks.

Until that moment Twitter had been a newsnetwork, used by activists to communicate and transfer news: with this passage they started to see playful and recreative goals. [video]

We asked Giovanni what he thinks about the use VIPs make of Twitter, especially considering what has been done with Il Più grande spettacolo dopo il weekend by Fiorello: he thinks VIPs use social networks as normal people do, publishing fragments of life, photos of friends and family. He is very surprised though by the ease with which this happens. In the 90s, having to give name and surname to register on an Internet website would have been outrageous, most probably because of the strong anonimity culture, for which privacy was a fundamental value. [video]

Another question we asked Giovanni is linked to the definition of Gilda35, related to the concept of dada satire: it's a concept that comes from the forums he used to read in the 90s, when Internet was starting to spread in Italy. There were no cultural tool sto deal with such a new scenario, and it was lived as something new in a very strong fashion. People have been awaiting it for decades, since it originally was a military project to create a web that could resist even a nuclear attack.

This almost Sci-Fi scenario brought us to the introduction of new concepts such as living information, singularity, collective intelligence derived from the interaction between man and machine: however, when Internet finally came, people were confused. In some groups there started to be talk of dadaism, and a lot of ideas that became common patrimony of online communities, activists, hackers and counterculture, came exactly from this movement.

All of the sudden there was the possibility to create new forms of creativity. Memes, for example, in their simplicity do some brilliant statements, and can even bring forth political campaigns. Just think about Occupy Wall Street, that was born as an AdBusters joke. [video]

We asked Giovanni what Anonymous is: it's a huge online community, not born on Wikileaks. It's bigger and more important than Wikileaks, and it was born on the web of 4chan, an anonymous imageboard. Anonymous gives a lot of importance to the anon figure, a principle that was strongly afirmed during the initiatives against Scientology.

Social networks mean resonance for this important online presence, while anonimity allows for an incredible creativity. On social networks we're limited to repost, and re-propose contents, while anonimity not only explodes creative capacities, but strangely it allows us to talk about politics freely. [video]

Finally we asked how, in his opinion, the use of social networks and Internet per se as a tool wil evolve. Giovanni thinks that when we talk about Internet we should all be very humble. It is immense, and we can only see a tiny part of it. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!
