Come marketer, tutto ciò mi rattrista.
Me ne preoccupo?

The Influence Game is Just Ego Massage
Klout. Kred. Increasingly there are systems sprouting that claim they can measure how influential you are in the online world. There are a lot of people who watch their numbers on these sites much like a hawk watches its prey. If the numbers go up they rejoice and attempt to figure out what they did to gain such benefits. If the numbers go down they lament their fortune and wonder how they can recover quickly.
As Klout and Kred continue to age in the marketplace, more and more people are leaning towards the belief that some measurement of influence is going to become necessary in the online world, followed by the business world. Indeed, some companies are already considering Klout and Kred scores as part of their hiring process.
As a marketer, this all saddens me. To me, if your responsibility is to promote your company’s products, or another company’s products, the “game” should not be about you. Monitoring your Klout score or your Kred score, trying to get your blog lots of awards and badges, what does that REALLY say about your ability to promote a brand other than yourself? Does a high Klout score indicate that you understand the intricacies of branding? Does a high Kred score indicate that you would be able to save a company suffering from product or monetary problems?
The cold, hard truth is that the influence game is really something else. It’s an ego massage game. It’s a way to promote yourself as an individual. It’s a way to get a slap on the back from the online world based on platforms that can easily be gamed. Now for some industries, this could prove useful. If you’re a celebrity promoter, for example, your ability to give a person high exposure via gamification can come in handy. Today’s marketing world, though, is far more complex than what a simple Klout score can measure.
Should you completely avoid looking at your Klout or Kred score? I wouldn’t necessarily go that far. I occasionally check in just as a point of interest. Do I worry about it? Absolutely not. I don’t even worry about my blog’s traffic. I know the blog is performing well if it garners conversation and/or shares. If someone finds it useful, I’ve done my job. If I help shine the light on a marketing problem, I’ve proven my worth, and I think in a far more credible way than telling someone I’m influential with a lot of +Ks.
Of course, it’s possible that I’m looking at this all wrong. I certainly seem to be a salmon swimming upstream in this evolving conversation. What do you think though? If you’re a marketer, is your “influence” online as important as the results you produce?

Prossimamente: Olivier Blanchard @thebrandbuilder

Coming up soon: Olivier Blanchard
Tomorrow we'll have the pleasure of interviewing Olivier Blanchard, strategist and marketer known for being the author of the book Social Media ROI, a blueprint for companies looking to build social media programs that will actually yield results, not just fans and followers.
Olivier helps companies develop, build, integrate, manage and measure social media programs, manage their reputation online and offline, and develop sustainable brands in an increasingly complex media landscape.
He also trains company executives and project teams in all matters of social media management and measurement, then help them build and integrate effective programs into every facet of their business, from Public Relations, business development and market research to Human Resources and Customer Support.
In addition to his company’s day-to-day activities, he spends a good amount of time speaking about effective brand development, marketing strategy and corporate social media engagement.
Olivier has more than 15 years of marketing management experience in several specific categories: Marketing project management, Social Media Program Management, strategic branding, brand management, online reputation management, product launch management, marketing communications management, community development, business development, and product design ideation experience. He has worked in government, manufacturing, energy, fashion, retail, event management and business services sectors, and just spent a year learning how to help software resellers and IT shops better engage with small and mid-sized businesses in the US.
He lived in Europe until the age of 17. He has always been fascinated by great Marketing and by the way some companies seem to understand that tying consistently delightful experiences with their brands always spells success for them. He was always drawn to print and TV ads, even as a kid. While the other kids were drawing robots, aliens and superheroes, he was designing slogans and ad campaigns for imaginary products he spent weeks prototyping out of molding clay and model materials. He have since managed to successfully bridge the gap between product ideation and design (his name appears on a number of very cool patents), and the marketing that helps accelerate broad product adoption – which makes him a little different in his approach to marketing than folks who come from strictly PR and ad agency backgrounds.
"I grew up in a culture which favored quality over quantity, substance over hype, style over fashion, exceptional over average, extraordinary craftsmanship over “made in China” labels, and originality over standardization. This early education in the unmatched value of true quality and authenticity has shaped every aspect of my way of thinking, from the projects I choose to work on to what products and brands I opt to invest in on a daily basis. Settling for average or “good enough” aren’t really options in my world."
