Earthquake in Emilia: 365 days and a few hours later

Here is the piece, actually pieces of rubble that fall on me (not so much stuff, to be honest, but enough to make you say a couple of epic swearings). Morale, I thought it's not my skill to bring me on the piece, it's the piece that's coming and sometimes it's quite scary, a fear that goes bone deep and makes you stay focused. Like at 4 a.m., when the instinct says run outside on the stairs but the brain tells you to wait until it's done before you do something stupid. The brain won, in those long seconds, 10, 15, I don't even know how many.

What I do know is the noise that throws you out of bed without giving you the time to understand, the earth that's shaking hard, the 9 stories above you that dance in the air while the walls crack and the rubble falls and you ask yourself: will the shack up there hold? Yes, it holds. Then you go out on the streets, in front of the fountain Graziosi and you look into the eyes of the others. You see the young ones, a bit frightened, while the older, the grandparents, those go back inside after a short while. People who have seen stuff in their lives, that don't get scared that easily and that a bit you envy for how the hell they do it.

Then you take the mobile phone and start looking at the tweets. When you start reading you see updates from Padova, Milano, from Veneto to Trentino to Liguria. You wonder, but don't realize, you don't think you're the epicentre (you never do, you always refuse that thought, it has to be that way, for hope), but you think that wherever it was, the place will be completely destroyed. It's not, but already there are damages, deaths, wounded, and 3000 evacuated people. You look for information on media, nothing, you refresh, nothing. Only the people, the people on the streets, actually spread information. Good thing there's the people. You get on your car, and from Modena you go home, towards Soliera, in the general direction of the epicentre. The street is empty, the fog is going up together with the dawn that brings rain. The rain, you think, it always rains after an earthquake. Because the injustice complicates the lives of evacuated and rescuers.

At one point the brain connects. Tomorrow I have a specialistic visit (gastroscopy) at the hospital of Mirandola, one of the towns that has been hit, and quite near the epicentre. I call, they tell me to call tomorrow. Here the damages are serious, we're evacuating part of the hospital, we're waiting to understand whether the structure can be used or not. I say thanks, and hang up. I've been up since 4 a.m. I write down these lines confusely to fix the moment, while with one eye on the web, and the other on the lamp.

10minuticon Giuditta Pini @piccolapini

10minuteswith Giuditta Pini

We interviewed Giuditta Pini, candidate at the Parlaiment for the Democratic Party, and member of the Young Democrats.

First of all we asked Giuditta how she started her political activity: shows the candidates to elections that have a Twitter account: from the application interface it is possible to send tweets to any candidate and see some aspects of their political position, such as the party they belong to.

We asked what the current situation regarding open data and civic hacking is in Italy: it is surely a very stimulating situation, because there haven't been any important results at a national level, which leaves space to doing much better. At the same time no datasets that are truly useful have been released, and often they're not even updated.

The data is released by the administrations in a easily readable format: the task of the civi hacker is to take the data and feed it to the machines, or write programs that use that data. Unfortunately both datasets and civic hackers are lacking, even though inside Spaghetti Open Data and Open Coesione there are many people who are doing their best to make a difference.

The ideal situation as for the transparency of the PA and the availability of open data would be to have regularly updated data, based on the frequency with which the data is collected: of course this requires a lot of work, and a place where you can easily find them and - why not - more colleagues to work with in order to get useful information out of them.

Alessio believes there is a tendency to say that data has a sense: data doesn't have any sense by itself, you need to read it and give an interpretation. Civic hackers are people who do a great fantasy work in order to understand how to use raw data, to make apps or get insights. There are already quite a few good examples, such as the app that gives an alert whenever you enter high risk neighborhoods, or the app that allows citizens to report problems with streets or urban decor.

In Italy there is also another problem, which is the randomness of data: they are released under several formats or subformats, which makes it difficult to normalize it. It becomes a huge task for the civic hacker, which is why it would be a great idea to introduce some laws regarding open data: for example, the PA should have to release a minimum number of datasets in a given format, and keep them updated, so that apps can be built upon them. Currently none of this has any legislation.

Open data represent an important tool of democracy and direct control, as Alberto Cottica has stated: getting in touch with political representatives, having in depth insights on the efficiency of the PA, the safety of the neighborhood, and even the efficiency of ambulances.

Of course, I invite you to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis.

#Festivalfilo12: let's start again from the things that matter, from the culture that pays

From the 14th to the 16th September the Festival of Philosophy 2012 was held in Modena. The topic of this edition was "The things" and never before the title would have been more appropriate. Because nowadays (much more than yesterday), it's the things that determine multiple aspects of our lives.

It's things that the market makes us buy, it's the things that lose their lengthy intergenerational role because now we get used to disposable consumism, it's things that aren't there anymore, have been destroyed, just like the houses, or have remained buried by other things during the earthquake. It's the factories, the bell towers. But the things are also the ones that have survived, those to which we remain tied, the things are those that can be rebuild. And there in the creases, among the screws, the bolts and the bricks, the ruins, among dolls and fridges and old furniture the philosophy, sociology and antropology unfold in telling us the things, and how we live or lived things, or with things.

180.000 people this year for a festival that has offered (like every year) a program that might initially not seem easy to handle for everyone. Modena, Sassuolo and Carpi hit by the earthquake have been full, have been up to par for the tsunami of people despite a few perplexities on the possibility that, after the 29th of May, the area would be capable of hosting such an event. But the willingness was there, the volunteers and philosophers were also there. The rest was provided by popular participation. Sitting here and trying to explain what was said and how would require pages after pages and there's already a festival website and newspaper articles that to that much better already.

What I can do is try to tell you about the surroundings. Small episodes, just as the one my friend who manages a B&B told me about, of how he was sold out and of those young people from Puglia who asked what there was to do in Modena and after his list of pubs and discos they said that no, they wanted museums, libraries, culture. That means there is hope. And more, culture pays and repays, despite those that keep looking upon it as if it were a useless anchor for the country. Culture creates satellite industries, generates profit and moves economy. Come ask the Modenese.

And from the culture you can start over, you must continue if it's true that from September to October in the earthquake triangle two huge cultural events have taken place, such as the Literature Festival in Mantova and the Philosophy Festival in Modena, while in October there will be the Internazionale Festival in Ferrara. If we look at the attendees, the answer that comes naturally is that people want culture and is willing to pay if it's top quality (in Mantova many events require a fee). And all of this just to participate and listen. And then there's the culture to preserve, the culture to renovate and that is falling apart, things that people from all over the world come and pay to see (if we don't move quickly, we might say came).

Now let's apply the matter to forming culture (in the widest and most general concept), or better form cultural competences of high level. Only those who don't want to see can deny.

So, let's start again from here, from things, the ones that matter for real.

Domani avrei fissata una visita specialistica (gastroscopia) all'ospedale di Mirandola, paese colpito e abbastanza vicino all'epicentro. La voce all'altro capo è tesa, molto. Dico grazie, riaggancio.

#Earthquake in Emilia: being on the piece without willing it

In Intervistato.com they always tell me I always manage to stay on the piece, and they ask how I do it. Last week I go to Milan and they evacuate Macao. I was on the piece. This time I go to Modena, and there goes the earthquake.

Here is the piece, actually pieces of rubble that fall on me (not so much stuff, to be honest, but enough to make you say a couple of epic swearings).

#GiovanardiLimonata: a kiss to say "No" to Giovanardi

Sunday, on the 19th of February, Modena has decided to answer with a protest collective kiss to MP Carlo Giovanardi's statement at Radio 24, where he said that a public kiss between two women is the same thing as a person peeing on the street.

It's been a manifestation that was small in numbers but big in content and warm participation of those who were present: it was all organized by Young Democrats of Modena, Arcigay Modena and other associations who have adhered to the initiative.

The location chosen for the protest was Matteotti Square, the same one - wouldn't have turned out so good even if it were done on purpose - where a few thousand women gathered in February last year shouting "If not now, when?" to protest against Berlusconi and his Government, tired of the image of the woman that was constantly given. It's been just a little more than one year, the government has changed, but once again it was necessary to go out and protest against discriminatory statements, to defend rights and freedom that in a democratic country, in 2012, should have been already given for granted.

When I arrived in the square at about 15.40 pm, a group of young people was already there, organizing the last details. There was frenzy, it was the first time a protest of this kind was done in Modena. Those who organized felt on their shoulders the enormous meaning of what was about to begin. Those who participated felt on their shoulders the responsability of representing those that couldn't be there, of those who - just as them - are forced to fight to see their right to love, live and cohabit recognized by society and law.

At 16.00 pm it all started, and if someone expected or hoped for an aggressive contestation, well: they were probably disappointed. The calm tones, the irony of who knows they're right (and it's not clear why they shouldn't be after all) and has nothing to hide because there's nothing bad that they should hide, the pervasive and honest desire to attest rights and freedom, love and affection, simple things, we weren't going for the moon, have transformed those three hours in a joyful party. A party where good music (by Joy Ride) was just good music and kisses were just kisses, no tricks, simple kisses and not deterrent weapons aimed at "bon ton", as someone would have wanted us to think. Just normality. And, with no offense, this is the Italy we want today.

On the stage, between one song and the other and a kiss in the square, there have been several speaches, concise, clear, honest, touching, like that of a mother from the Agedo association who explained how unbearable it is to hear her children defined as abnormal. You could look at them, mother and son, hugging on the stage, a family like many others, normal, because it is for the affirmation of normality that we're fighting, if you hadn't understood it already.

In the square, on stage, there were friends, moms, dads and children who probably learned to walk just a few months earlier, those children who tomorrow will have to live in the country that we're trying to build, with great difficulties, today. A country that lives in the paradox of "fraud is ok", but kissing someone whom you love, regardless of their sex, is not ok.

Before we finish, probably I should have written a post with facts and those who were present, but don't blame me, you can find plenty of those on the newspapers. I prefered to tell what came out of my heart and gut yesterday, among those 200 people who didn't do anything but kiss with an extreme, spotless normality.

Kisses to everyone from Paz!
