Buona visione!

StartupID | Paolo Mulè of Overblog

Our twentieth interview for StartupID is with Paolo Mulè, country manager of Overblog.

First of all we asked Paolo what Overblog actually is: it is a blogging platform born in France in 2004, at a time when there was a particular need in the market for that kind of product. The old version of Overblog had some native social functions of community and forum.

The numbers are very interesting: classified as the biggest European blogging platform, it counts 32 milion unique visitors a month, and 2 milion existent blogs. The old version existed in Italy as well, and counted 45.000 blogs and more than one milion and a half unique montly visitors.

At the end of 2011 the Overblog team decided to entirely rethink the product, with a great crowdsourcing project that involved 500 bloggers from 5 different countries. Starting with this confrontation project, gathering of ideas and social brainstorming, the bases for the new platform were laid, completely rethought considering the differences in the web scenario compared to the year the old versione was launched.

The idea was to build something that could integrate in a new and innovative way with all the social platform that already existed, so the pillar is a deep, bilateral integration with social networks, not only at a sharing and content output level, but also and foremost at an input and content import level. It's possible to import contents from social accounts, based on rules and filters, and then treat them as blogposts. This is the aspect that differentiates Overblog from an aggregator: each content can be modified, enriched, reviewed and integrated with new info in any way the user likes.

We asked how interactions are treated on Overblog: it is important to stress that Overblog is not a social network but a publication platform, and it treats interactions in the same way we're used to see them treated inside blogs, with a few add-ons. A native comment interface and the possibility of integration with Disqus and Facebook Comments, with all the diffusion aspects that follow.

Giovanni Scrofani said that "Overblog has established the passage from textual blogging to visual blogging": the user has the possibility to link the social profiles and import contents, or use the editor to create posts, which is composed by sections that allow to publish several types of content in a modular fashion, and reposition them with a simple drag & drop.

The social networks that are currently available for sincronization are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, YouTube and Flickr, and soon enough we'll see Pinterest, Google + and Linkedin.

We asked whether the platform will ever be paid, and what their business model is: Paolo has revealed that Overblog will always remain free as for basic functionalities. Some premium functions will be available, but for now there's nothing definitive.

As for the business model, it is a classical advertising model, with distribution of contextual in target ads that are coherent with the blog topics. Furthermore, Overblog proposes to users a revenue share model: if the user decides to host advertising on the blog, a revenue sharing program is activated with the blogger.

We also talked about future implementations and the perspectives for the next 6 - 12 months, so I invite you to view the interview, definitely much richer in details and insights.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

StartupID | Gabriele Antoniazzi of Responsa

A few days ago we interviewed Gabriele Antoniazzi, founder of Responsa. Gabriele explained in detail what Responsa is, what the goals are and what the possible implementations for their new widget are.

Responsa is an online collaborative questions and answers encyclopedia on Quora's model, but designed for the Italian market: the main intent is to cross the language barrier. Born in August 2011,  the idea is based on the need to build a high quality content repository that is very different from the content offered by Yahoo Answers[video]

The startup is grown in H-Farm, and has been financed to develop the project, which is already at a good point: the online platform is stable and functioning, even if in beta version, but the developers are already working to integrate functions that are more and more advanced. During these days they have also released the widget, which gives the possibility to integrate in the website or blog a dynamic question&answer system. [video]

From our next interview you will be able to send your questions through Responsa's widget, which you will find integrated in the presentation post (Coming soon) of the interviewee. It will be necessary to create a Responsa account, but signing up is really simple, since it also integrates natively with Facebook and or Twitter. It will also be possible to vote the questions that have already been asked and share them or your own question on your social media. [video]

As for Responsa's business model, the widget will surely open new perspectives and create new use cases. It is a tool that will completely change how static FAQ work, and give the users the possibility to interact and be engaged in a totally new manner. The difficulty of use and integration of the widget is similar to embedding a YouTube video, since it's just a few lines of code, so this tool will indeed be for everyone. [video]

The numbers are interesting: the community counts about 1000 users, which have been gained through word-of-mouth, so without any kind of marketing operation. Surely the feedback analyzed during these months will be useful to integrate and develop new functions and make the user experience much better. [video]

The goal is to make the widget available to the public at the end of March, and together with its diffusion there will probably also be an important growth in user number, considering that it is necessary to create a Responsa account in order to interact inside the widget itself.

The perspective is that Responsa becomes an important point of reference, the main resource for users that have doubts or questions that need specific answers. It can also be used as a tool to gather questions and answer to the users' doubts. One of its main values is linked to the fact that the exchange happens inside the website, not in an external community, where the exchange is lost. With Responsa the information is categorized and remains available for an unlimited amount of time. [video]

We also talked about the growth perspectives and other possible applications of the platform, so I invite everyone to view the full interview, much richer in detail.

Enjoy!
