10minuticon Luca Sappino @lucasappino

Buona visione!

10minuteswith Luca Sappino

A few days ago we interviewed Luca Sappino, an Italian journalist currently behind the foundation of the newborn newspaper "Pubblico" by Luca Telese.

First of all we asked Luca how the newspaper was born: it is a new left-wing newspaper, which will be the home of a left that isn't just political, but most importantly cultural. It has been created as the newspaper of "orphans", those people that during these last few years haven't had a "home" as a newspaper can be. Pubblico is born from this need, which has been met by Luca Telese and many others that have put their stakes on this project, even risking their own jobs. [video]

Another question we asked is about the business model. Luca told us that the newspaper will start small and grow right away: the break even is 10.000 copies. The model is of  an open newspaper that will need a lot of subscriptions to stay alive, but also a large community. He thinks there's a lot of request for a home, a place to stay, and because of this request, the community will be created rapidly. [video]

This year at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia we talked a lot about the evolution and development of newspapers, in particular the differences between digital and paper. This is why we asked how much sense there is in creating a paper newspaper in this particular historical moment. Luca thinks that advertising on the Internet is victim of prejudice by companies, and this is why advertising is still strongly linked to paper. Even those newspapers that we're used to see online can't survive just thanks to the online revenue, but can only exist because of the physical copies sold. [video]

People aren't culturally ready to pay for content on the web, so the options are essentially two: choosing to create paid content, as some American newspapers do, or work on the companies that provide connection, and that make revenue on others' contents, and that might pay.

Luca thinks the process of technological development is impossible to stop, even though in Italy, because of  matters related to digital divide, backwarness of laws and infrastructures, this process isn't going as fast as it could be. It is also a matter of newspaper direction, which aren't yet ready to make the big step, and companies that aren't ready to put resources on the web. It is the advertising that keeps newspapers open, together with sold copies and subscriptions, and this is basically the reason why the Internet hasn't yet grown from this point of view.

Finally we asked what relationship the newspaper will have with user generated content: Pubblico will be an open house to the people who want a place where they can contribute to information. It will be a newspaper for which facts are common good, facts seen as consequences, that tell the story of all of us. [video]

With Luca we also talked about his radio projects, programs, and possible future business models, just to name a few topics.

I invite everyone to view the interview, very rich in details and insights.

Enjoy!

Buona visione!

Intervistato.com | Francesca Fornario #ijf12
The third interview for the Intervistato Journalism Festival series is with Francesca Fornario, journalist and satirical cartoonist who writes for L'Unità, works for RadioDue (she conducts the program Un giorno da pecora together with Claudio Sabelli Fioretti and Giorio Laura) and for La7. Furthermore, she gathers her videos on the website www.satira.tv.

First of all we asked Francesca in what way satire, as it was done on traditional newspapers, can be reconciled with the new tools, such as social media and online newspapers. Her opinion is that social media represent an incredible opportunity for satire, especially because there are fewer and fewer editors that are willing to invest to spread news, let alone satire. Satire is making fun of power, which isn't quite willing to help satirical newspapers grow. Internet, on the other hand, is for free: you can write, draw and then spread your content online for free, without any distribution cost. [video]

As for the integration of tools, in the offline-online relationship, Francesca thinks that in the future there will only be one tool, that will be a newspaper, tv, internet, offering on demand content, not imposing it, and this will happen for news, satire, and entertainment at the same time.

This is a great opportunity for those who are just starting: the diffusion of tecnology allows everyone to record a video and create content. The 3rd article of the Italian Constitution says that the State should be the one who eliminates the obstacles in the way of citizens being equal: in Francesca's opinion, and in this case, where the State failed, technology can give a hand. [video]

Often editors consider online activities as a threat for sales, an aspect that Francesca analyzes from two different points of view: the one of the satirical journalist who creates contets, for which new technologies represent an opportunity; on the other side the one of the editor. This is a transition phase, though, also considering the gains, that only come from the sale of advertising spaces. On paper newspapers they're fewer and fewer, most of it is on TV and it's constantly growing online, even though they're sold very cheap. The quantity of people who are consuming news, satire and art, and the amount of time they dedicate to these activities is constantly increasing, which is without a doubt a positive signal: journalism isn't dead, but it's very probable that paper newspapers are dead. [video]

We asked Francesca about her media diet: she is currently using Pulp, a news aggregator for iPad, that allows you to read rss feeds of newspapers and blogs. Among her daily reads you can find Brancaccio, Loretta Napoleoni, Odifreddi and ZeroCalcare, just to name a few. It's not even a newspaper anymore, it's a multimedia place that gathers text, photos and videos.

If on the one side it might be worrying that this kind of approach might bring you to not search anything else besides what you're already reading, on the other only by opening a Twitter or Facebook page can bring you all the inspiration you need. If a great newspaper reader as Francesca was now doesn't touch paper newspapers anymore, it means that the transition is probably inevitable. [video]

The destiny of newspapers is to disappear, while that of art and news is to multiply, grow and reach more and more people every day.

Enjoy!

Prossimamente: Francesca Fornario @fornario #ijf12

Oggi intervisteremo Francesca Fornario, autrice satirica, videomaker e giornalista.

Coming up soon: Francesca Fornario #ijf12

Today we're going to interview Francesca Fornario, satirical author, videomaker and journalist.

Francesca writes for L'Unità, works for Radiodue (she conducts the programme Un giorno da Pecora with Claudio Sabelli Fioretti and Giorgio Lauro) and for La7. She also publishes her videos on the website www.satira.tv.
With a degree in Communication Sciences, she has chosen journalism and moved to Milan, where she worked for several newspapers. During these last few years she has also been a regular guest at Annozero.

After drawing her first subject, she understood that what she liked doing most was writing scenes, as she explaines during an interview given after she won the prize Young Scenewriters 2001 with her "Il tempo di morire":

"For years I had been certain I wanted to do something else in my life, and when I wrote the first scene I understood what. I like writing scenes so much that I can't write subjects. Everyone has their own technique to write subjects. I write the scenes first, one after the other, and then I write the summary, and that's the subject. A very functional method, like going from Rome to Naples passing through Paris. Many great screenwriters are born journalists, some - not me - were actually great journalists. From the outside you might think that the distance is short, that writing scenes is the same to writing, tell stories with words. But it's not like that: writing scenes is telling stories through images (so, first of all, imagine), it's - as Suso Cecchi d'Amico says, "Writing with the eyes". I suppose most people get it by themselves, but for me it's been a sort of revelation, like the time I understood that De Gregori was playing some songs that were Bob Dylan's, and not the other way around."

Today we'll have the chance to talk with Francesca about her work as a journalist and as a satirical author.

Of course, if  you want to propose a question, simply fill in the form above!
