We had the pleasure of having with us Dan Ariely, Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at the Duke University, and we talked about a series of topics linked to the applications psychological research might find in commercial domains.

First of all we treated the question of the utility of research in psychology for companies, and what topics companies might find most important to study. Dan talked about motivation as the key aspect to hold in mind when you really want to bring innovation inside your organization[video]

Furthermore, I couldn't help myself from asking if the "disconnect" between science and businesses is ever going to be solved. The answer was a very clear analysis of differences between the behavior of big companies, that have a tradition, and those of start-ups, when it comes to the adoption of new strategies based on psychological and socio-psychological research. [video]

Another controverse topic I wanted to discuss was the external validity of experiments, because many companies refuse to base their change on results they don't believe can be valid outside the labs the research was conducted in. [video]

There were of course a few questions about cross-cultural research and the similarities and differences between human beings, that then brought the discussion to "neuromarketing", a topic as fascinating as debated.
Dan explained the advantages and limitations of this type of approach: in his opinion, as promising as neuromarketing is, it risks to be a failure because scientific techniques at the moment aren't ready to bring this method to a commercial use. [video]

The questions you have proposed have also been asked, the answers can be found in part 3 and 4 of the interview. [video]

We finished talking about the so called "cognitive lazyness" and its consequences on our purchase intentions, on our decisions, both big and small, the last news in the field of decision making, HR business strategies and emotional advertising[video]

Finally Dan has briefly explained what he's working on at the moment at the "Center for Advanced Hindsight" research center. [video]

If you want to participate in Dan's cross-cultural research, just follow this link and fill the form.
One small thing to do for you, a big step for science.

Prossimamente: Dan Ariely @danariely

Coming up soon: Dan Ariely

In a few days we will interview Professor Dan Ariely, social psychologist and the James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at the Duke University, where he holds appointments at the Fuqua School of Business, the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, the School of Medicine, and the department of Economics. He is also a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight.

Dan works with neuromarketing, decision making, motivation and irrationality in decision making: his work is exactly at the intersection of psychology and business, and his research has sometimes brought companies to change they way they function. Dan Pink's famous talk "Dan Pink on the Surprising Science of Motivation" at TED was based on Dan Ariely's cross cultural research on motivation.

Dan Ariely is the author of the New York Times bestseller Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions and The Upside of Irrationality: The Unexpected Benefits of Defying Logic.

We'll have the chance to talk about the dynamics of neuromarketing and the advantages scientific research can represent for companies. Finding the right way to apply the findings of research in psychology to pragmatic aspects, linked to business, is one topic that many are investigating. Dan is considered the most influential behavioral economist: he will explain to us the advantages and the limits of this kind of approach.

He has also been a guest at TED, where he talked about irrational behavior.

And of course, if you have any questions, please fill the form above.
