StartupID | Massimo Ciuffreda of wiMAN

The 28th interview for StartupID is with Massimo Ciuffreda of wiMAN.

First of all we asked Massimo what wiMAN is and how the project was born: the idea was initially born a few years ago from the need to solve the problem of access to wifi in public venues. He and his associate created a hotspot in their little town in the Gargano, Puglia, that offered free wifi to the whole town, but also to foreign tourists.

They stopped because realizing a bigger infrastructure required really important costs, so they looked for a way to make the project scalable and expand it in wider areas. On one hand the Pisano decree fell, on the other there was the idea of changing the concept of connectivity. They made the infrastructure smaller, they left the idea of big structures, and closed the necessary technology in a small router that they offer for free to owners of public venues that make request for it.

The owner must only connect the router to the ADSL to create a wifi hotspot, without the need to create complciated infrastructures in order to offer the service. Of course, they are always responsible for the line, so the router creates two webs, a private one for internal use and a public one for clients.

Authentication is done usually by receiving a code via SMS, but the system is very difficult to use for the tourists who don't own an Italian sim card. With wiMAN this barrier is eliminated thanks to authentication via social networks: the majority of people who use Internet also have an account on either Facebook, Twitter or G+. The time needed in order to get online has been drastically reduced from 10 minutes to 20 seconds, which makes the process extremely easy and fast.

Another interesting aspect is the advantage for the location itself when it offers the service: the open wifi line takes the name of the venue and it becomes its first source of advertising. The project is currently in a test phase with more than 150 wiMAN points and 50.000 connections in 3 months, and counts about 10.000 users.

Beyond the ease of use and the solution for safety problems, there's also the added value of sharing  the connection of every user on their own social channels: on the personal profile there will be an update indicating the fact that there's a connection to the wiMAN wifi, with the name of the venue and a link to its public page (fanpage or twitter account). This mechanism creates a form of viral advertising at a minimum cost, since the status updates aren't on the fanpage itself, but on the profiles of single users.

The router and the hardware part were already existent on the market: the wiMAN team bought it, modified it and reprogrammed it with an open source system that talks to the public APIs of social networks.

As for costs, currently both router and service are free and will remain so until the 31st of December 2012. From that date it will be necessary to pay a small fee in order to continue using the service.

The business model is centered on advertising: the connections are tied to social networks, so they allow to better understand what type of products a venue offers, what kind of clients, what kind of advertising works best.

Finally we faced the difficult matter of privacy: Massimo revealed that, although every owner has a dashboard where to monitor everything that happens on the web itself, the personal data will be kept exclusively by wiMAN, which in case of law infringement can give this data to the authorities.

Enjoy!

[video]

Buona visione!

StartupID | Nicola De Carne of WiFighters

The twentyfirst interview for StartupID is with Nicola De Carne of WiFighters.

First of all we asked Nicola what WiFighters is: it's an idea born as a certification program of Wi-Next, but it has rapidly become something more. The intention was to dedicate a particular initiative to installators, which constitute the skeleton of Wi-Next, exactly when the company was entering the distribution of electric and electronic market, which isn't its natural market.

This is how the concept of "digital artizans" was born, a term mutuated from the title of a book, and that refers to all those workers that we know as electricians, satellite installators, and so on. These professional figures are evolving from their original jobs, which was laying cables and putting electric plugs, to the use of digital technologies. [video]

Nicola believes this is a result of the economic crisis: until the economy went well nobody felt the need to learn new things and normally did their job. Now there's this need, and these people have understood that they need to learn Internet and new communication channels quickly, and become less cable layers and more specialized technicians. [video]

WiFighters is a program that certifies on Wi-Next products, and includes the preparation on wifi technologies and then on Wi-Next products. It is also a great way to aggregate the knowledge of these people, especially considering that Wi-Next's role is to support and give assistance to installators almost every day. With the increase of their number, however, it becomes impossible to do that on the phone, so a few web 2.0 tools and private social networks have been made available in order to make them communicate among them and with Wi-Next staff. [video]

They're micro entrepreneurs that do enterprise and system among them, also using the WiFighters website that gives visibility to every single installator, highlighting the projects they've done: this way each and every one of these digital artizans has the possibility to show what they can do and getting in touch with other installators and with the market.

Digital divide, in Nicola's opinion, can be fought not only with great infrastructural works but also with small projects throughout Italy. When in the 70s an installator went and put the antenna for the television set, you asked him to also synthonize the channels, and this skill was an added value. Digital artizans, who are constantly in people's homes, can play a fundamental role in digitally educate their clients. [video]

To participate in the program you only need to fill in the request module available on the WiFighters website: the requests undergo an accurate selection, in order to guarantee that the people who are part of WiFighters are extremely motivated. As for costs, the certification itself is completely free. However, since this is a strong investment from everyone, and the program certifies on Wi-Next products, it is necessary to buy a product kit, no matter how small, on which to experiment and ask questions in the days following the certification itself. It is a cost connected to the fact that, the more training there is in the beginning, the least assistance you need to provide after the purchase. [video]

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!
