La quinta intervista per la serie Intervistato Journalism Festival è con Paige St. John, giornalista investigativa americana nota per aver vinto il Premio Pulitzer grazie alla sua serie di articoli sul sistema assicurativo immobiliario dello Stato della Florida, il “Florida’s Insurance Nightmare“.
In primo luogo abbiamo chiesto a Paige come ha iniziato a occuparsi di giornalismo investigativo, ma per lei non c’è alcuna distinzione tra giornalismo investigativo e semplice buon giornalismo. Si tratta, a suo avviso, di porre le domande che le persone non vogliono vengano poste, e scoprire fatti che non si vuole vengano scoperti: qualunque inchiesta di questo tipo è giornalismo investigativo. Relativamente alla situazione del sistema assicurativo, di cui Paige si è occupata a lungo, Steve Katz di Mother Jones, intervistato in precedenza, ha proposto una domanda: per quale motivo la stampa business americana ha fallito così miseramente nel coprire gli eventi che hanno portato al crollo del mercato immobiliare nel 2008, e quale ruolo l’industria bancaria ha avuto in questo crollo?
Secondo Paige ci sono molti parallelismi tra il mercato immobiliare e la relativa crisi dei mutui subprime, e il sistema assicurativo, in quanto il rischio viene comprato e venduto dalle stesse persone, dagli stessi banchieri e dagli stessi fondi. Sebbene spesso si tenti di nascondere i fatti dietro un’apparente difficoltà della materia, specialmente quando si tratta di economia, oggi i giornalisti hanno gli strumenti necessari per capire davvero fino in fondo che cosa sta realmente succedendo. Abbiamo chiesto a Paige che cosa è per lei il giornalismo, e a suo avviso è parte integrante del tessuto della comunità, e lei stessa ha sempre lavorato per piccole organizzazioni, al servizio dei lettori locali, creando un forte legame con le persone e il luogo in cui vive. [video]
Infine Paige ci ha detto qualcosa rispetto alla sua dieta mediatica: in primo luogo non legge più i giornali di carta, ma solo le versioni online del Los Angeles Times, del Wall Street Journal e del New York Times, che legge quotidianamente, e il Bloomberg News, in quanto si interessa moltissimo di economia e come questa impatta sulla vita delle persone. The fifth interview for the Intervistato Journalism Festival series is with Paige St. John, American investigative journalism known for winning the Pulitzer Prize thanks to her seris of articles on the housing insurance system in the State of Florida, which were called "Florida's Insurance Nightmare".
First of all we asked Paige how she started dealing with investigative journalism, but for her there's no difference between investigative journalism and just good reporting. It's about asking questions people don't want you to ask, and discovering facts that shouldn't be discovered: any inquiry of this sort can be called investigative journalism. [video]
As for the situation of the insurance system, with which Paige has worked a lot, Steve Katz of Mother Jones asked for what reason the American business press failed so miserably in covering the events that led to the collapse of the house market in 2008, and what role the banking industry had in that collapse. In Paige's opinion there are many parallels to be drawn between the housing market and the subprime mortgage crisis, and the insurance system, since the risk is bought and sold by the same people, by the same bankers and the same funds. Even though facts are often hidden behind the apparent difficulty of the matter, especially when it's economy, today's journalists do have the necessary tools to understand thoroughly what is going on. As for the use of social media and the way they have changed the way of doing journalism, Paige thinks they're extremely powerful tools, but they can also be misleading. Twitter and Facebook are great for gathering information and for the analysis of social networks and their influences, but a great attention must be spent controlling sources and the trustworthiness of news. Another tool with great potential are the data given to citizens, that can get their personalized data with which to write stories from their own point of view. [video]
We asked Paige what journalism is for her, and she thinks it's an integrated part of the community: she has always worked for smal organizations, serving local readers, and creating a strong bond to the people and the place where she lives. [video]
Finally Paige told us something about her media diet: first of all she doesn't read paper newspapers anymore, but only the online versions of the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, which she reads daily, and the Boomberg News, since she's very interested in economy and how it impacts people's lives.
