Giovanardi in materia (ne avevo parlato qui).

Italy of the not so human rights (yet)

Elections time and time for true requests to the candidates. Amnesty Italia has collected 10 of tghem on a topic that in our country only with great difficulty can find space in the political agenda and it is always too rethorical in the civil society: human rights.

That of Italy and human rights is a story that has seen many issues during the last few years. From immigration to gender discrimination, to prisons, the chronicals are full, unfortunately, of facts that leave us all quite perplexed and worried about the current situation of the country in the matter of rights.

The most recent one is Pannella's battle for prisons, a dirty stain on a not truly brilliant marks page. But we're in the country of Bossi-Fini, the Northern League banners with the Indian reservations, the hunt to the immigrant from the East, constantly drawn by the media as a rapist and a murderer.

To this add the gender violence that goes from stalking to economical and psychological constraint, very often inside a relationship, from harassment to sexual abuse, that bring along the tragedy of femicide, that during the last year has seen record numbers in our country, a topic that I had tackled on these pages a while ago. Everyone should also read the Report on Italy by the special reporter for the UN, Rashida Manjoo, about gender violence published on the website of Amnesty Italia and the Istat report 2006 on the violence against women to get an idea of the numbers and the social alarm they put in light.

No wonder if, and this is fresh news, our country in the matter of rights is last, after Russia and Turkey, as the Report of the European Court for Human Rights in 2012 enhances.

What are country needs are reforms, from the prison system to the judiciary system. On the 8th of January the news broke that Italy has been condemned yet again by the EU for the never resolved problem of crowded prisons. But it's not the only note of blame. The EU had already recalled Italy an year ago, on the topic of immigration, because of the refusal to accept the immigrants from Lybia, thus going against refugees rights. (see the judgment of the case Hirsi)

Furthermore there is a verdict about the fellony of illegal migration, a gift from the Berlusconi governments and his laws about immigration, emitted b the Justice Court of EU: the fellony of the foreigner that is expelled or rejected, and who disobeys the order to leave the national territory violates the EU directive about repatriation and should not be applied.

To these problems, as I said in the beginning, you must add homophobia, transphobia and the lack of rights for LGBTI people, more and more pressed in Italy, whose norms and sanctions against discrimination are very far behind. In this elections campaign we've seen a few topics enter the debate, civil unions and gay marriage. But what's truly missing is a true sensitivity and seriousness of the tones of the debate regarding diversity, starting from istitutions, whether they're laicist or religious, who always concentrate on the finger without even looking at the main problem. Just look at the last political or religious declarations, or the now sadly famous statements of On. Giovanardi about the matter.

In these ten points Amnesty also puts the request for the introduction of the fellony of torture and the transparency of law enforcement. This point recalls the facts of the Genova G8, where a large part of the responsibles have remained unpunished in spite of the serious violations, facts that are yet again on the table of the European Court for human rights after the verdict. To these, I'd say, we should also add the right to vote for the children of immigrants of second generation, born on Italian territory.

Amnesty Italia has summed up these points in a website with the questions and details and sent everything to the main candidates or party leaders, lists or political movements running for the next political elections in February 2013, inviting them to answer to these crucial points in order to make Italy a modern state, and not the last arrived when it comes to rights. We'll see what they're going to answer.

But beyond the political answer, it is necessary to open a reflexion and a wide debate in the civil society. We must not wait for politics to make the first step. A drive from below is necessary and urgent, from the voter who has the power to make pressure and demand answers and facts from his representatives. We do need to sign the petition on the aforementioned website, but it's not enough to do some click activism.

It is vital to keep a constant monitoring on the topic of human rights that aren't just those of immigrants, gays and convicts, but ours, all of us. And the sooner we'll understand that, the better.

The useful vote

About a month away from the vote, the elections campaign has given us two revivals I personally didn't miss. The first, the most obvious, is the Berlusconi 16:9. According to the calculations of La Stampa a few days ago, from the Christmas vacations until last week, Berlusconi has been on air for 63 hours, a little more than Monti and a lot more than Bersani.

Yet another descent on the field that this time has the declared goal of "making the country impossible to rule", as Berlusconi himself has states. A sense of responsibility directly proportional to his height.

The second return, this time in the field of center-left, is of the "useful vote". It seems that there have been contacts between PD and Ingroia in order to find an agreement in Lombardia, Veneto, Campania and Sicily regarding the lists at the Senate.

The picture seems pretty simple to me. PD and SEL are the only ones that in these elections are running to win. The others run either to represent a part (center right), or to give voice to all the insatisfactions of Italy (Grillo), or to try to be determinant in the composition of the future Parliament majority (Monti). It's still unclear why Ingroia is running. His initial idea, to give Parliament representance to movements, to associations and to a whole series of civic sobjects that are often at the sides of official politics, had a logic, a political dignity but most of all I thought it would be a winner at an elections level.

Too bad that in a matter of weeks the inspirators of this elections cartel have been set aside by the various Di Pietro, Ferrero, Diliberto and company, transforming Civil Revolution in a group of weirdos that would make you miss the disappeared "Sinistra Arcobaleno". The only goal remained to the ex judge of Palermo is to break the balls to Bersani and Vendola, hoping that in Campania and Sicily they will get enough votes so there will be no majority at the Senate. The same tactic used by Berlusconi who has recovered the Northern League in order to get some votes in Lombardia and Veneto.

Now, there's no agreement or appeal for a useful vote that will work here. It would be a mistake to panic and throw away all the work done so far by only showing the tactic or the numbers that never truly work out.

Here we can only make the voters understand that, with all the defects and also some contradictions, only PD and SEL can guarantee a serious and stable government. Today, only the Italia Bene Comune coalition can guarantee more equity and attention towards who pays taxes and more severity towards who doesn't, or directs capitals abroad, more civil rights for who hasn't got any, more social justice and equality in the labor market. And then green politics, broadband, technological innovation, more generational rechange, more law enforcement, and so on. No useful vote. A responsible vote.

Who wants to be a part of this idea of Italy can choose PD or SEL, hoping in a good result that will allow the coalition to govern without being blackmailed, aware of the fact that it will be no piece of cake. Whoever chooses otherwise is probably content with the current situation.

Buona visione!

Maria Petrescu | @sednonsatiata

StartupID | Marco Vismara of Lookals

The thirtieth interview for StartupID is with Marco Vismara of Lookals.

First of all we asked Marco how Lookals was born: two years ago he was contacted by an American girl who worked for Vayable, a startup that does something similar to what they are trying to develop now for Italy. So the idea was to import the solution on the Italian territory and adapt it to what is probably the most touristical country in the world.

Lookals is born in Berlin but it grows between Berlin and Catania. Marco meets Peppe Sirchia, co-founder at Meedori, another startup born in Catania with an operating office in Berlin, on DigItaly Berlin, a community that gathers great part of the Italians operating in the digital field in Berlin. Inside this community the agreement that sees Meedori as an accelerator and investor inside Lookals was born, and Tony Burgo (another Meedori co-founder) as CTO and Pepe Sirchia as Advisor.

Lookals is a marketplace for experiences in Italy and abroad, but especially in Europe: travellers are put in touch, through the platform, with local experts that guide them through all the experiences that are a must in their area, creating a tourism experience that is quite different from the traditional guided tours.

Prep is done online in 3 fast steps: you put in the destination, select the categories you're interested in, and get in touch with the expert for that area. You book and pay online, and once you're there, you can meet your guide!

The platform will hold a fee, calculated at 10%, divided in 8% for the traveller and 2% for the expert. This way thi first has some guarantees regarding service quality and who offers the experience has the guarantee of payment. So a very tight community is created, also thanks to the social media authentication.

As for the technology behind it all, it will be developed in Java. They are already thinking about a mobile version, for which the development will start with the launch of the platform, in order to offer a 360° service.

The business model is based on the fee on transactions, with a model that is similar to that of AirBNB.

Inspired initially bt Vayable and Gidsy, it is quite different since it aims to the development of the territory in all its particularities and small towns and locations, not basing everything on large cities as the competitors do.

The goals for the next 6 - 12 months will surely be to launch the platform and mobile app, trying to leverage the advantage given by the fact that other startups don't offer a mobile geolocalization service, and creating an important community, both of travellers and experts.

The average cost for the service has been estimated to be around 40 euro, and the website will be online in about 20 days.

I invite you to view the full interview, much richer in detail than my brief synthesis.

Enjoy!

Siete Spartani o Ateniesi? Ci piacerebbe sentire la vostra!

When It Comes To Social Media, Are You Like Athens or Sparta?

In ancient Greece, two city-states really dominated the country. Those two city-states were Athens and Sparta. As you might have learned from the movie 300, Sparta was a very militaristic society. Boys were trained for the military almost from the time they were born. Little mercy was shown to children who were weak or otherwise abnormal. The Spartans were not much for arts or emotion. They were about action and letting those actions speak for them.

Athens got into its share of wars (including against Sparta), but Athens was much more about philosophy and the arts. Many of the world’s greatest thinkers either gravitated towards Athens or were actually born there, including Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato. It was in Athens that  Democracy was  born. While Spartans were almost always engaged in refining their citizens for action, Athenians concentrated more on the ideas of things.

In the world of social media, there are people who approach things in the Spartan manner and there are people whose approach is reminiscent of the Athenians. There are pros and cons to both approaches. Let’s dig into each one in a little more detail.

The Spartan approach to Social Media

The people who take the Spartan approach to social media are the ones who want to conquer every single new platform that comes out. They want to test each one to see if it is weak or strong, and they do not necessarily strategize in terms of whether the platform could really help them meet any objectives. The overriding goal is to be dominant everywhere. This approach can lead to brand confusion, thin resources, or abandoned online accounts.

The good thing about what I call the Spartan approach is that these people will try things, really try things, before they write testimonials or blog posts. They dig into different sites and new features and show a real passion for staying ahead of the technological curve. These people, often called early adopters, often end up with a lot of admirers, just like the Spartans. Moreover, they often tend to be really good at what they do, which can make them intimidating.

The Athenian approach to Social Media

The Athenian approach to social media, in contrast, emphasizes thought over action. Many new platforms may be ignored entirely because they are deemed unnecessary for that person or that company. Strategies are plotted out, including rules for engagement, goals, and integrating social media tactics with other forms of marketing. This can lead to stronger but less aggressive or passionate campaigns.

The real problem with the Athenian approach is that you see a tendency to philosophize about different platforms versus the Spartan approach of just jumping in there and trying things. This can mean that on an individual basis, a person can end up saying things that reveal their lack of true understanding. We all know that in order to become credible regarding a new social media platform, you need to tinker with it at least a little bit. The Athenian approach sometimes leaves that step out and leaves a lot to conjecture.

Just like in ancient Greece, the people who adopt the Spartan approach to Social Media often have a lot of negative things to say about the people who adopt the Athenian approach, and the reverse is also true. However, as we have seen, both approaches have their good points as well as their disadvantages.

With that being said, how would you classify your approach to Social Media? Are you a Spartan or an Athenian? We’d love to hear from you!

The influence of the civil society

Many defenders of the so called civil society, lawyers, journalists, entrepreneurs, technicians, have decided to get into politics. An almost pandemic effect. But are we sure that this tsunami is really for the best?

The title is open to at least three interpretations. We're at the end of January and the look is already oriented towards the end of next month. The time is appropriate for the flu, the seasonal one, made of viruses and sneezes and tons of paper tissues that every year puts millions of Italians to bed. But it's not the only one. The calendar also puts during the same weeks the elections campaign. So during these weeks we've seen another kind of flu. It's a disease that hits many, famous or not, of the civil society, or at least laicist in comparison to politics. Many, before the epidemy, used to cover positions that in any other democratic society are fundamental, nevralgic, and that in theory should be independent: such as the print, or the judges.

Representatives of the civil society have always been present, it's nothing new. As Mario Calabresi remembers, it happened several times in Italian history, from Spadolini to Scalfari to Colombro, and even through Miriam Mafai, speaking about print. From the judges we have the example of Di Pietro and the recent one of De Magistris. The problem is that now the matter is getting into huge proportions that are almost sliding into ridicule.

All of a sudden Mineo, Ruotolo, Giannino and other colleagues have felt the need to get into the field. As on the judges sides, and together with Di Pietro and De Magistris we now also have Grasso and Ingroia. Without even talking about the technicians or ex technicians, entrepreneurs and so on.

#Spioncino: Cronache in filigrana

Colpo d'occhio e fantasticherie in La 25 ora di S.Lee.

Sopra i titoli di testa di “La 25a ora” di S.Lee svettano i grattacieli di NewYork. Sono già avvenuti i fatti dell’11settembre 2001. Ed è notte. Quasi notte.

Chronicles in filigree

A canary yellow vintage Super Bee pulls up short on a New York City street, and Monty Brogan gets out with his buddy Kostya to look at a dog lying in the road. The animal was mauled in a dogfight and Monty intends to shoot him but changes his mind after he looks him in the eye and decides to take him to a nearby clinic instead.

Fast forward to late 2002, and Monty is about to begin serving a 7 year prison sentence for dealing drugs. He sits in the park with his dog, Doyle, thinking of his last day of freedom. He plans to meet his childhood friends Frank and Jacob that night at a club with his girlfriend Naturelle. Frank Slaughtery is a hot shot trader on Wall Street and Jacob Elinsky is an introverted high school teacher from a privileged family, with a crush on one of his 11th grade students. He visits his father, James, a former firefighter and recovering alcoholic who owns and runs a bar, to confirm their plans to drive to the prison the following morning.

Though Monty's drug money helped him keep the bar, James is full of remorse, and he sneaks a drink when Monty goes to the bathroom. Monty, facing himself in the mirror, lashes out in his mind against everyone else: all the New York stereotypes he can think of, from the cabbies to the firefighters, the corner grocers to the mobsters, as if he hates them all.

Monty sold drugs for Uncle Nikolai, a Russian mobster, along with Kostya. Kostya tries to persuade Monty it was Naturelle who turned him in since she knew where he hid his drugs and money. Monty refused to turn state's evidence against Nikolai but he's not sure what Nikolai will do when he meets him at the club that night. He remembers how he met Naturelle when she was 17, hanging around his old school, and how happy they were before he was arrested. He persuades Frank to help him find out if it was Naturelle who betrayed him.

When they all meet at the club, Jacob sees his student, Mary, and Monty invites her in with them. Monty and Frank talk about what kind of a future he can have after prison, and Frank says they can open a bar together, even though he told Jacob he believes Monty's life is over and he deserves his sentence for dealing drugs. Frank baits Naturelle by accusing her of living high on Monty's money, and not caring where it came from, but she reminds him that he knew as well and said nothing. Jacob, meanwhile, finds the courage to kiss Mary, but both of them appear to be in shock afterwards and go their separate ways. Monty and Kostya go down to talk with Uncle Nikolai, who gives Monty advice on surviving in prison.

Then Nikolai tells him it was Kostya, not Naturelle, who betrayed him, and offers him the chance to kill Kostya in exchange for protecting his father's bar. Monty refuses, reminding Nikolai that he asked Monty to trust Kostya in the first place, and he tells them he's done, and that his father is done with them, and he walks out.

After they leave, he tells Naturelle that he's sorry he mistrusted her, and he has one last thing to do. He goes to the park with Jacob and Frank, and asks Jacob to look after Doyle. Then he admits that he is terrified of being raped in prison, and asks Frank to beat him, saying if he goes in ugly he might have a chance at survival. Frank refuses, and Monty tries to provoke him, until Jacob intervenes and Monty attacks him. Frank grabs Monty, who goads him into taking out his frustration in a fistfight, leaving Monty bruised and bloody, with a broken nose, and Frank in tears. Monty gets up and goes home.

Fast fashion crash

So, we were saying: fashion is moving too fast. And it's exactly the topic of speed that introduces the second chapter of this saga.

Let's start from a fact. Today anyone, with a modest investment, can dress like a girl fashionista in five minutes: it's enough to go to Zara, Mango or H&M, and put together an outfit with closed eyes. Being "in fashion" is evidently possible to anyone, and it is the reason why it doesn't have any value anymore. (Another matter is to have a style, because style isn't for sale.)

During the last few decades, thanks to fast fashion, nice clothes in line with the last tendencies are available for an increasing number of people, in increasing quantities, for prices that are lower and lower. Which in theory is positive: if it weren't that this mechanism, taken to the extreme, is generating a short circuit in the system. Because in order to continue to make profits, thefast fashion retailers must have big quantities, and keep the production costs low. Delocalization is an obliged choice.

And whoever thinks about the classical Made in China is simply naive: even that is a luxury nowadays, and in order to really cut on costs it is necessary to go to Bangladesh, the Philippines, India - those places that don't have great expertise but are famous for the lowest manpower prices in the world (and yes, it's not a coincidence, also because of the fires in the factories).

Obviously the saving logic is also applied to the choice of the materials: inevitable, given these premises, that quality is the one who suffers. The problem however is relative: because - let's face it honestly - how many consumers today are capable of telling the difference between a French sew and one done with a sewing machine, or appreciating the differences between several types of fibers?

Helped by the speed with which tendencies follow one another, clothing is becoming a disposable good. And while luxury brands try to supply by widening their collection with "continuatives" (which are the classical clothes, timeless, always the same - the ones that never go on sale, to be clear), I feel like making a very sad consideration.

It's not that fashion is dead: it actually committed suicide.

Le Invasioni Barbariche: 20.000 tweets for Tiziano Ferro, Carlo Cracco and Matteo Renzi

During the first episode of the new edition of Le Invasioni Barbariche, The Fool analyzed the event by monitoring Twitter conversations. Let's see which guest has engaged the social audience the most and who were the most active users.

Analysis

The analysis was conducted on the temporal window between 5pm on January 23rd and 9:43 am of January 24th. During this time The Fool Social Monitor's tool has found a total of 20.767 tweets, with a peak activity of 191 tweets per minute. As for Impressions (or OTS - Opportunities To See) the event has generated a total of more than 30.813.849 impressions, calculated by multiplying the number of tweets done by a single user by the number of followers.

As for users who were actively involved in conversations, we found a total of 8.651 unique users, with an average of messages per users around 2.0. The minute during which the activity was most intense was around 21:38, just a few minutes after the show started.

Users

By analyzing the involved users (those with the highest number of mentions or retweets), the most popular are lead by the conductor @dariabig, who was mentioned for 2.883 times, followed by the first guest of the evening, @matteorenzi who gathered a total of 2.477 tweets and by the profile of the show @leinvasioni with 2.021 mentions, and the star of the evening @tizianoferro with 719 mentions.
AMong the top posters (calculated by the number of tweets sent in the temporal window which was analyzed, and that contained the selected keywords) we find @leinvasioni with 84 tweets, @filopucci with a total of 70 tweets, followed by @melamelablu and @francescoqb, respectively with 58 and 53 tweets.

Impressions

As for the users who generate most potential impressions (or OTS) we find in the first position by quantity @dariabig with a total of 2.468.711 impressions, @tznferroteam with 2.296.328, @leinvasioni and @lapinadeejay respectively with 2.223.126 and 2.052.736 impressions.
It is interesting to see how the sum of the impressions of these first 4 users generates alone the 29.3 of the total engagement.

If we analyze the accounts with most followers who participated to online discussions, @nicosavi emerges with hi 543.132 followers, @tznferroteam with 382.736 followers, @matteorenzi with 339.301 followers and @librimondadori with 199.951 followers.

Keywords and hashtags

The statistic analysis of words (excluded those of common use) most used during the airing, we see how the first one is "tiziano" (mentioned 2.140 times), followed by "ferro" with 1.202 mentions, "tonight" at 1.093 and "renzi" used for 1.065 times. The most popular and used hastags (counting repetitions) have been invasions (11.384 uses) theinvasions (3.249) renzi (2.837) and invasionibarbariche (1.366). Finally, as for the hashtags with the widest audience, which means with the highest number of unique users, we find in first position the hashtag invasions (4.826 unique users), followed by leinvasioni (1.902), then by #renzi (1.711) and finally in fourth position #invasionibarbariche (946).

This shows us how Twitter's audience is always very anchored in the here and now of an event, how Tiziano Ferro's interview has stimulated the audience, and how Renzi's political character was the one to really conquer the social buzz. We'll see who the next guests will be next week together with Belen Rodriguez, and who will make the audience tweet the most.

Are droids taking our jobs?»

Possible futures: the rise of the machines and the new world

In June 2012, Andrew McAfee, a researcher with several degrees who has also been a professor at the prestigious Harvard Business School, goes on the stage of the TEDx Boston to talk about the results of his latest research. The title he chooses for his speech is as short as it is allarming: «Are droids taking our jobs?»

During the 14 minutes of his speech, McAfee focalizes the attention of the audience on the economical recovery following the recession of the last five years: the main economical indicators in the US show some sort of growth. The only data that remains low is employment.

According to McAfee, the new developments of automation and software are partially responsible for this situation. The professor makes the example of translation: during the centuries before ours, the passage of a text from one language to another required the involvement of an individual. Today translation programs are available online, often for free and for any kind of device.

The impact is enormous not only in the creative or the digital field, but also in reality. The autonomous Google car - which is now in a phase of advanced testing - will have effects on milions of drivers who crowd American streets. Just as humanoid robots, whose development is accelerated by the enormous investments of DARPA.

The professor closes sustaining that we will be on the verge of overcoming the limitations of our brains, defining an utopian scenario in which humanity will have more time to dedicate itself to great challenges - such as reducing poverty and pollution - leaving to machines the task to provide for our own survival.

However, not everyone share McAfee's positivist approach. Paul Krugman, economy Nobel prize, launches an interesting reflection from the pages of the New York Times. He sustains that the impact of the digital era will be witnessed by the arrival of intelligent machines. They will soon be ready to do operations that used to require a great quantity of human manpower. This means an exponential increase of productivity and growth.

For what price, though? And most of all, who will benefit from this growth? According to the economist it is easy to suppose that many will be left behind. The bar of necessary preparation to compete with machines will become higher and higher, just as the times of formation of individuals who - unlike their artificial counterparts - require years of study and maturation before they can be ready to face the challenges of society and of the market.

It is not the first time in history that man interrogates himself on the outcomes of the exponential advance of technologies. Around the middle of the XIX century in England, a protest movement against the new textile machines developed, because they were considered responsible for the lowering of wages and the increasing unemployment. The phenomenon, called luddism, owes its name to Ned Ludd, a textile worker elevated to a symbol when in 1779 he destroyed a loom.

Gustavo Piga, ordinary professor of Political Economy at Roma Tor Vergata, in a recent post on his blog has analyzed a paper by Jeffrey D. Sachs and Laurence J. Kotlikoff, intitulated "Machines and Long-Term Misery". Piga concludes describing a troubling scenario and some countermeasures to do in order to avoid that the situation gets any worse. The challenge of the current and future generations is all here; we can expect it will not be easy, but the choice remains, as always, in our hands:

«The XXI century of robots could reveal itself as the century in which young people will burn robot factories as luddist did with looms, they will burn the society fabric, retiring their citizenship from a world that enslaves them. It is not an attractive prospective. Or it could be the century in which we will learn how to rapidly instruct our young people, redistributing to them part of the machine surplus. But in order to do this we need: a) young and visionary leaders that can manage with easy masses of exasperated young people and b) the support of a large part of the rich, older class, capable of riding the wave of change to avoid being striken by a tsunami of proportions unknown until today, and that can give up part of its economical prerogatives, obtained with a progress that cannot be credited exclusively to their merits, but rather to fortune and the cases of history, which have made it so happen that centuries of ideas accumulated in time produced a great abundence fallen casually in their hands.»

TAV and the old same Italian story

The bad news is that the Florence police, as the newspapers have stated, is inquiring 31 people, in the entire country, for fraud, corruption, abusive disposal of waste and conspiracy in the inquiry on the building of the Florence high speed train. The good news is... well the good news, as more and more often happens, is missing.

Thirtyone are investigated: functionaries, directors, technicians, even some who were supposed to supervise the contracts and the correct functioning of works for the TAV, a long tunnel that was supposed to cross Florence and that should have been excavated by the maxi drill renamed "Monna Lisa". A giant almost completely assembled but never used and that now is confiscated together with the rest of the Firenze Campo di Marte construction site.

Right after the news, the controversy exploded. Someone called it the day of "the No TAV victory". Everybody expressed their opinion: why not, why yes. And yet this inquiry has surprised even those who have been fighting for years against the building of the Florence tunnel. "If things are truly like this, yet again the reality of made in Italy business goes beyond fantasy: we'd be in front of the gotha of the worst - has declared the Idra association, which has always been against the TAV - If things are truly like this, the documents would unveil a perverse osmosis, terrifying, between political power, public committance, private contractors and organized crime."

Because what really makes the Italian citizen mad is how the big, medium and small works are blocked. There would be many reasons and valid motivations to be favorable, or less favorable, to high speed. You can agree or not with those who think it is "an indispensable work for the future of Tuscany and Florence and an important investment to relaunch work and occupation", as the president of Toscana region Enrico Rossi has stated.

As you can agree or not with the inhabitans of Mugello (between Florence and Bologna) who protest for the irreversible damages to the acquifers, and with the No TAV associations which have always been against building a tunnel beneath a city that is an UNESCO world patrimony. But what really makes people mad is that any work done in Italy runs the risk of being blocked not for the choice of the citizens, or who governs the citizens, but because of the interest of a spare few.

Hiring of relatives and friends in exchange of positive responses from the ministery, contracts for the family business in exchange for political and economical contacts. In the inquiry papers there's all the Italy of today. If all the accusations are true, and find their ground in facts, not only a tunnel beneath Florence would be in danger, but the essence itself of good government and democracy.
